Aloha Environmental Management Committee members,
There is no reason to weaken or father threaten Bill 83, Draft 2, and its amendments. This and
other plastic-limiting bills before it have been undermined by industry and chamber of
commerce reps who either don’t care about our people’s health or the environment upon
which those people are dependent for their well-being.
This bill helps attack unnecessary plastic and its inevitable and dangerous pollution. Allowing
plastic to continue to unnecessarily break down and seep into our waters and ‘aina will
continue and increasingly allow it to sicken and kill Hawai‘i’s marine life and our keiki.
This bill is EASY to pass because anyone with eyes knows plastic is a blight on the landscape
and nearshore waters. (And, if they go out to sea, they’ll see it there, too).
Passing Bill 83 will make council members look and feel good for doing the right thing (not a
common occurrence, I’m sorry to say). It will show that democracy works since limiting
plastic pollution is hugely popular with the public.
Please send Bill 83 forward to the County Council with a favorable recommendation.
