RE: Invitation to consult regarding cultural impacts and archaeological sites for the County of
Hawaii proposed `Ainako Housing Development.
Aloha, Mr. Clark.
I am working on behalf of the County of Hawaii to help them conduct an environmental
assessment for a proposed housing project located in Punahoa 2, between Waidnuenue Street
and `Ainako Street. The project area is roughly 40 acres located on Tax Map Key (3) 2-3-030:004
with a road corridor connecting to Waidnuenue Street across TMKs (3) 2-3-030:001 and (3) 2-3-
031:001. The `Ainako Subdivision Housing Project is designed to fill the housing need of the "work-
force" population. The Project would consist of infrastructure development of single-family and
multi-family housing. Phase 1 would include construction of up to 82 townhomes and 28 flats (110
residential units), and Phase 2 would include up to 34 single-family units. The total number of units
would be up to 144 at final build-out.
To help the County determine cultural impacts and significance of archaeological sites in the
project area, I am seeking consultation with community members who have long-standing
cultural connections to this area, might have knowledge of traditional cultural use of the proposed
project area, or who are involved in ongoing cultural practices that occur on or in the general
vicinity of the project area. An archeological survey has been completed and I can share the
preliminary results with you if you would like to discuss the cultural and historical signifiance of them.
An informed consent form is attached if you would like to be interviewed. This consultation is
required under Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 343 and Chapter 6E-8.
If you have mana`o about this place and are willing to share, or if you know of someone who
might, please feel free to contact me at (808) 900-6403 or ben.barna@stantecgs.com. My office
is in Hilo.
Sincerely,
