Aloha, Leeward Planning Commission. We are writing to express our extreme concern with
the proposed extension and modification of the development on Site M in the Mauna Lani
Resort area as referenced above.
We have enjoyed living in the Mauna Lani Resort area for 10 years. Over that time, with the
current density, we have experienced water rationing requests. Water is a serious concern. It
doesn't take much of a drought period to create issues. Weather patterns are constantly
changing, and we should not risk overuse of our water supply.
We have also witnessed vastly overcrowded parking at the Beach Club as well as severe
crowding on the beach (Makaiwa) during certain seasons, holidays and weekends. Frequently
cars are parked on the lawn all the way up to the entry gate, because there are no parking
spaces available. The development proposed will exacerbate these issues substantially.
Makaiwa beach is a unique gem in all of Hawaii. There is nothing like it on the other islands
with its beauty and historic fishponds. It cannot handle more beach goers!
Many days the traffic entering and leaving Mauna Lani is backed up. It is frequently dangerous
to turn left when exiting Mauna Lani Resort area. More development will make this worse.
The Big Island is built out enough! Its lack of overdevelopment is what makes it special in all of
Hawaii.
We strongly oppose any further development in the Mauna Lani Resort area!
Please preserve our wonderful island and do not put it on the path of overdevelopment as has
been seen on Oahu and Maui.
Your consideration of our concerns is appreciated.
