Aloha,
I am writing in favor of the SMA permit.
I have been working in the Mauna Lani area for over 20 years, since 2018 when DHL mahi got involved they have been tasked with getting several different areas up to par. Some of
these areas were some what neglected in the past such as Holoholo Kai & the puako petroglyph park. From what I have personally experienced the team involved with managing
the greater good of this great land has been doing a great job of bringing it back to life.
The area of interest is in the north mauka side of the Mauna Lani land it doesn’t get much use or traffic day to day, however in a emergency situation it would be very beneficial if this area
was maintained and had the opportunity to be opened up to the highway. When we had to evacuate for a tsunami warning in 2025 Mauna Lani felt like a grid lock, traffic was stuck just
trying to get onto the highway. It was a very stressful situation. If we had another access road available to open out to the highway it would make these types of emergencies a lot smoother.
From what I understand the development group is willing to take on the repaving and maintenance of the road way in this area so it can be used for emergency situations. For that
reason it seems like a no brainer to fulfill the requested permit.
