IMPROPER CORRECTION METHODS
A dog that is barking can be in anagitated state and shouting canencourage dogs to bark louder andlonger.
Shouting
Pressurized water to the eyes, nose,mouth, and ears can cause injury orillness.
Use of a water hose to the face
Striking/shock collars
Dogs don’t make the sameconnections humans do. With thewrong training, they may not linkunwanted behavior withpunishment.
Punishment
Section 4-4-25. Noisy dogs. (a) No person shall keepany dog which barks, bays, cries, howls or makes anyother noise continuously or incessantly for a period often minutes or barks, bays, cries, howls or makes anyother noise intermittently for a period of twenty minutes
within a thirty-minute period of time to the disturbance
of any person at any time of day or night and regardless
of whether the dog is physically situated in or uponprivate property. (b) A dog shall not be deemed a noisydog for purposes of this section if, at the time the dogis barking or making any other noise, a person istrespassing or threatening to trespass upon privateproperty in or upon which the dog is situated or for any
other legitimate cause which teased or provoked the
dog. Such action is declared to be a public nuisance and
detrimental to the public health and welfare.

Understanding Dog Barking
Behavior
Barking is a natural and
instinctive behavior for dogs;
however, excessive barking is
not.
When dogs are primarily kept
outdoors, it is the owner's
responsibility to ensure that
they are well cared for and
adequately managed.
Outdoor dogs may bark due to
factors such as:
Breed and age
Stress
Loneliness
Environmental triggers
Lack of stimulation
Helpful practices include:
**Identify triggers** and putdeterrents in place - such ascitronella spray or ultrasonic collar
**Provide adequate shelter** fromweather, wind, and heat **Ensure constant access** to cleanwater and appropriate food
**Spend regular time** interacting
with dogs to alleviate boredom andstress and provide durable toys ifpossible **Avoid prolonged isolation**, whichcan result in excessive barking **Check on dogs frequently**,especially during the evening andearly morning hours
**Improper territory identification**Dogs may deem their territoryextends outside the property line
Barking is a behavior
