Edith Kanakaole Foundation (EKF) is rooted inlongstanding community relationships with organizationsthat share a commitment to cultural stewardship, ina care, and place-based learning, including The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Ka Ohana o Honuapo (KOH), N Mamo o Kw(NMK), Ka Umeke Keo few. EKF and TNC are building on shared kuleana to care for neighboring lands, as Kaaliki Kula is near lands stewarded by TNC. TNC is also working to protect Hlea, located northeast of Kaaliki Kula. Hlea’s current landowner, Olson Trust, previously engaged EKF to help develop a cultural stewardship guide for Hlea’s cultural sites. Together, EKF and TNC are drawing on their respective strengths to support stewardship strategies for these KOH cares for the lands at Honuapo and NMK cares for the lands at Kw; both areas are makai of Kaaliki Kula. EKF has supported these organizations by helping draft loko iand contributing to loko ia restoration work. EKF continues to stand alongside KOH and NMK as they advance stewardship rooted in cultural knowledge and responsibility to place. EKF also partners with Ka Umeke Keo, a Hawaiian language immersion public charter school in Hilo, to create culture-based learning opportunities that connect to language, place, and ike kpuna. recognized for its powerful hula style and deep cultural knowledge. Today, is led by Huihui Kanahele-Mossman, granddaughter of Edith Kanakaole. In partnership, EKF and Hlau o Kekuhi are restoring and caring for makakloa Heiau through protocol, restoration of the heiau’s rock structure, removal of invasive species, and replanting of native species. Across the Hawaiian Islands, EKFworks withcultural practitioners and community partners who specialize and has experience in Western discipline including planning, natural resource management, law, communications, tropical conservation biology, and environmental science.EKF is recognized as a trusted steward of cultural knowledge and a partner in community- throughout Hawaient to ina and culture. Comm 26-106 What kind of support would TPL provide? wahi pana across the islands. TPL is partnering with EKF by providing technical expertise in conservation real estate as buyer and project manager. As the buyer in the transaction, TPL will lead negotiations with the private landowner, assume certain risks and liabilities, and cover agreed-upon costs such as option consideration and due diligence expenses. As project manager, TPL assists EKF raise acquisition funds and complete required due diligence, including appraisals, title review, and a Phase I environmental assessment.
