As you complete the activities in this book, you’ll see that some pages list one of the many benefits of walking and biking to school and within your community.(*) We hope you talk about these benefits with your family and consider biking and walking too, but always remember “Safety First!” Meet Pale (Pa-le) our Safe Routes to School ambassador! Pale loves to be outside with their nene friends and really enjoys walking and rolling to school. One thing you notice though, is that anytime Pale is biking or skateboarding (their two favorite activities) they always wear their helmet! See how many times you can find Pale doing what they love throughout this activity book!# Our goal is to make sure that everyone is included, that everyone is safe and that everyone has FUN! Everything is done with our values in mind as we try to SHAPE our community to be a place where more students canbikeandwalkiftheywantto(and if they have their parents permission!) Can you spot 10 differences in the below pictures? Pay attention! *Biking and Walking are good for the environment and can lead to less air pollution by reducing vehicles on the road. Choose routes that have adequate shoulders or sidewalks If you must walk in the roadway, walk against traffic Use crosswalks whenever available and always assess any potential hazards before entering the roadway (even if you have the go ahead, look both ways!) Keep an eye out for other pedestrians and micromobility users such as skateboarders and cyclists Watch out for cars and bikes that may be crossing the sidewalks to enter/exit the roadway Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of vehicles so you are sure they see you *Biking and walking can reduce the risk of many health problems and are great ways to get your daily recommended exercise. WhenBiking Wear a properly fitted helmet for all rides. For those under 16, it’s the law; for everyone else, it’s still highly recommended Use a bell or other audible signal to let pedestrians know you are approaching from behind or passing Yield to other pedestrians when riding on the sidewalk or on multiuse paths Make sure your bike is the right size and is adjusted properly to be operated safely and effectively Look, listen and observe before changing lanes, overtaking cars and bikes, or proceeding through intersections If riding in the road, always ride with traffic Use you left arm to make appropriate signal to before turning WhenWalking AllTheTime “Be safe, be seen”, wear bright, reflective clothing and use lights if doing activities during times of low light or low visibility “Phones down, eyes up”, keep your cell phone put away until you reach your destination, if it cant wait, stop and pull over to the side before you use it “Adhere to all signage”, follow all laws regardless of your chosen mode of transportation “Use appropriate safety gear”, based on what you are doing including wearing sunscreen and don’t forget to stay hydrated “Be aware of your surroundings”, even if you have the “right of way” look before entering any roadway or intersection “Be kind”, a simple gesture like a smile or a shaka can go a long way We want all road users to have a positive experience “Have fun!”, enjoy yourself, take your time, appreciate your walk or roll Safety tips!
