REASONS FOR THE REQUEST
According to the application, Puna is the fastest-growing region in the State, and
existing healthcare facilities are insufficient to meet the increasing demand for
these services. The proposed health center is intended to improve access to
medical services for Puna residents, reduce the need to travel to Hilo for
healthcare, alleviate overcrowding and long wait times at Hilo Benioff Medical
Center, and support the healthcare objectives of the County General Plan 2045
and the Puna Community Development Plan.
