I am submitting testimony to support the banning of Data Centers on the Big Island of
Hawaii.
The current technology is out of control requiring massive amounts of electricity and
water. They also create other environmental concerns that have not been well studied.
Besides noise pollution they also create ozone and affect livestock and humans by
electromagnetic field effects. Like previous new technologies the hazards were not
known before they were implemented on a grand scale. For example, 50 megawatt radio
towers created lethal capacitance in the greater area of the towers. Microwave
transmission was also a great hazard, and still is to any living thing that has the
misfortune to be in the path of the beam.
Some of the hazards of Data Centers will eventually be addressed when we learn more
about them. China is placing self-powered data centers at sea to minimize use of
potable water for cooling. But that may also be fraught with disastrous environmental
impacts.
The County would be wiser to spend its developmental funds on research being
produced at the Federal lab in Kona where alternative sources of power are being
developed.
