Testimony against Data Centers on Hawai’i
The impacts of data centers are crucial to the environment and the people. Data centers
are known to cause threats to human health as well as climate pollution, depleting water
supplies, and are the exact opposite of what we have been working towards for over decades
here in the Islands of Hawai’i: Clean renewable energy! Our water here, our ahupua’a system is
not just our resource, it is the source of life we must protect!
These data centers not only cause immense threat to our land but our water supplies.
Current data centers around the globe take up to more than five million gallons per day if not
more to cool down the servers. These power plants (data centers) may contribute to $5-10
billion of annual public health costs as seen in other places in the US with known reported risks
such as genetic damage and Tinnitus caused by constant EMF exposure. This is because of the
air and water pollution data centers produce. The electrical demands to run such a facility,
utilities cannot meet that demand without relying more and more each time on fossil fuel
productions causing such catastrophic damage to the environment on and near these facilities
at least 50 miles of range.
There are claims that building this facility could bring more jobs but only temporary
construction jobs, once that is finished onto the next center? The real abundance here is our
fresh breathable air and drinking water with sustainable goods rather than a building that not
only will take up land that could be used for housing or food operations, but the threat to our
wildlife and economy.
All and all, what does this mean for the people of Hawai’i? How will a data center benefit
the people? We must think about our future generations here in the islands, what does this
mean for the keiki? We must weigh the pros and cons of this production, yet all these data
centers have to show is the amount of damage that we as humans cannot reverse once done.
