Aloha esteemed leaders,
I am reaching in strong opposition to any language that would allow data centers in Hawaiʻi.
Data centers are reliant on water and land which kānaka ōʻiwi have always viewed as
precious shared resources. Studies show severe water loss to thesr facilities, and data centers cause physical and noise pollution. Our ecosystems are fragile and already under pressure.
The people do not need another situation that is adverse, especially while continuing to hold
the military responsible for the degradation of Hawaiian waters and lands. Hawaiʻi is home to some of the most unique biodiversity on the planet; any level of pollution undermines both
ecological balance and cultural practices tied to ʻāina stewardship.
From a Hawaiian cultural perspective data centers are the opposite of ike surrounding mālama ʻāina. Tech corporations may say they will provide economic contribution and innovation, but
the cost borne by local communities far outweighs material benefits. Jobs do not justify harm. Innovation does not excuse negligence. Profit should never come at the expense of public
health, cultural integrity, and environmental sustainability.
Sincerely,
Lei Ayat-Verdadero
