Subject: No Data Centers in Hawai`i (bill 170)

Importance: High
Aloha e commissioners,
The voices of the People of this state, and especially Hawai`i Island, are clear. Data centers are not a good fit for our land, culture, or people.
This is a huge question to drop in your laps, no less those of energy and other experts. So
many — most! — people don’t know what to make of the threats or promises made by these centers and their developers; but one thing is for sure: They gobble fuel, water, and land that
would be better saved and used for food production, subsistence, and living balanced lives on islands already experiencing food and sometimes fuel shortages. The benefits of AI aren’t
even known, yet we’re going down a path that can kill ALL LIFE on our planet to serve its expansion (amazing to say that without it being science fiction).
I ask that you heed the calls by experts who know the drain these facilities will have on our
society and the downright cataclysmic offshoots of the reason we’re even considering them (aka expanding AI).
Please do not prematurely allow data centers and the loopholes to that end that this bill still
contains (and those that may be added through this process).
Mahalo nui, Janice
