HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-01-05 Committee on People with Disabilities Minutes-decattach ADA Coordinator Activities December 2006 ADA - Title II & S. 504 Reported broken detectable warning on Kileaua Avenue to Highways Division Department of Public Works (DPW); Forwarded complaint re inaccessible traffic signal on Kamehameha Avenue to Department of Public Works; Forwarded complaint re State Housing facility to Office of Housing and Community Development; Received information from Department of Parks and Recreation re modification to provide access to Richardson’s Beach Park; Forwarded complaint re lack of notification regarding spraying of herbicide on Kapoho/Pahoa Rd. to Hawaii Department of Transportation’s ADA Coordinator; Discussed Kauai’s practices re spraying of herbicide and notification with ADA Coordinator, Kauai; sent memo to our departments who spray herbicide requesting public be informed of such activities in advance; Forwarded a complaint re lack of accessible telephones outside Hilo Public Safety Building to Police Chief with suggestions for resolution; Responded to inquiry from Office of the Prosecuting Attorney re modifying volunteer program for a person with back problems; Responded to inquiry from Mass Transit Agency re complaint that sidewalk outside Mooheau Bus Terminal is not 60” wide; Forwarded issues relating to effective communications with persons who are deaf to Police; Provided feedback to Department of Public Works, Engineering Division Head on new Curb Cut Request Procedures and Form; Attended two meetings with representatives from Corporation Counsel, Department of Parks and Recreation and Public Works to discuss appointment of Court Monitor for Transition Plans and County’s need for Project Managers; Met with Department of Parks and Recreation Department and Corporation Counsel to discuss service and therapy animals at the zoo; ADA Title I Reviewed New York Times article on diabetes in the workplace and contradictions inherent in the law; Reviewed Ninth Circuit decision regarding complaint UPS discriminated against employees with hearing impairments. ADA Title III Responded to inquiry from Building Supply Company re accessible house plans; Responded to inquiry regarding charges for visual fire alarms for non-profit agency. EOO Activities December 2006 Page 2 of 2 Other ADA Activities Attended County ADA Coordinators Meeting at Disability and Communication Access Board in Honolulu; Attended Mayor’s Committee on People With Disabilities in Kailua-Kona; Conducted Title II training for new Police Recruits and new Police Dispatchers; Followed up with Department of Public Works on plans to make ADA improvements to Police Station at Kealekehe; Drafted Memorandum for Director’s signature on call for papers for upcoming Accessibility Conference in Honolulu and call for Accessible Design Awards Competition. Equal Opportunity Conducted 2 non-supervisory Anti-Discrimination and Harassment Training Sessions for County employees in Hilo with a total of 24 employees trained;
