HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-11-02 Committee on People with Disabilities Minutes COMMITTEE ON PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Friday, November 2, 2007, 10:30 a.m. Corporation Counsel Conference Room PRESENT: Michael Gleason, Chair; Lawrence Scadden, Vice-Chair; Laura Tobosa, Secretary; Ted Yamanaka, James Souza EXCUSED: Jack Matsui, Jean Navarro, Ronald Wagner-Wright GUESTS: Malina Dravis-Tucker, Interpreter; Alisa Mitchener, Recreation Specialist- Department of Parks and Recreation; Ofelia Pertubal, CNA; Sonia Scadden, Teri-Spinola-Campbell, ADA Coordinator (Equal Opportunity Officer) CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 10:35 a.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES L. Scadden made a motion to accept the minutes of September 7, 2007. T. Yamanaka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. Diane Noda from Corporation Counsel introduced herself to the committee and stated that she was unable to attend today's meeting, but if the committee had any legal concerns or needed advice to call her at 961-8251, 961-8304 Ext. 114, or 345-8492 (office cell). STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON AGENDA ISSUES None. TREASURERS REPORT T. Yamanaka made a motion to accept the treasurer's report as submitted. J. Souza seconded the motion. The motion was passed. CORRESPONDENCE None. COMMUNITY LIAISON REPORTS A. EDUCATION/PUBLIC AWARENESS LIAISON € M. GLEASON No report. B. RECREATIONLIAISON € L. SCADDEN No report. C.TRANSPORTATIONLIAISON€D.COWDREY Since D. Cowdrey is no longer on the committe, R. Wagner-Wright would take over. No report. D. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS LIAISON € L. SCADDEN L.ScaddenreportedthatheattendedtheDCABworkshopandbasicallyweneedto Hawaii County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer make our own emergency preparedness plans. A. Mitchener asked if the committee would like her to do a report on P & R facilities that are used as shelters if they are accessible or not. The committee agreed that this would be good information. Another topic that was brought up was the reverse 911. J. Souza said you would have to register with Civil Defense, but he cautioned that some cell phones do not work but texting does. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. VOLUNTEER PARKING VIOLATION ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM UPDATE € SGT. D. VERIATO Sergeant D. Veriato submitted program statistics for the Volunteer Disabled Parking Enforcement Program for July to September 2007 which was distributed to MCPD members. B. UPDATE FROM DCAB € C. FLEMING/N. OLESEN/C. TOWNSEND The November report from C. Townsend, Program and Policy Unit Coordinator of DCAB, was distributed to MCPD members. C. ADA COORDINATOR'S REPORT € T. SPINOLA-CAMPBELL T. Spinola-Campbell provided her report as the ADA Coordinator for September and October 2007. ADA Coordinator's report attached. D. PARKS AND RECREATION € A. MITCHENER A. Mitchener provided her report for Parks and Recreation for October 2007. Report attached. NEW BUSINESS A. REPLACEMENT FOR D. COWDREY T. Spinola-Campbell had a possible referral. The committee members said to refer her to J. Viernes. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON NON-AGENDA ISSUES None. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Mitchener reported that Assistive Technology Research Center has a new executive director, Mike Jones. The next meeting will be held on Friday, December 7, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. in the Kona Mayors Office conference room.
