HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-09-01 Committee on People with Disabilities Minutes COMMITTEE ON PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Friday, September 1, 2006, 10:30 a.m. Aupuni Center Conference Room PRESENT: Ted Yamanaka, Vice-Chair; Denise Cowdrey, Jack Matsui, James Souza, Laura Tobosa EXCUSED: Lawrence Scadden, Chair; Betsy Whitney, Secretary; Michael Gleason ABSENT: Julia Staten GUESTS: Malina Dravis-Tucker, Interpreter; Karen Kotaki, Elderly Activities Division/Coordinated Services for the Elderly; Ofelia Pertubal, CNA CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 10:35 a.m. An introduction of committee members, staff, and guests was made. APPROVAL OF MINUTES L. Tobosa made a motion to accept the minutes of August 4, 2006. J. Matsui seconded the motion. The motion was passed with D. Cowdrey abstaining. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON AGENDA ISSUES None. TREASURER’S REPORT The treasurer’s report was reviewed. L. Tobosa made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as submitted. D. Cowdrey seconded the motion. The motion was passed. CORRESPONDENCE None. TEAM REPORTS A. EDUCATION/PUBLIC AWARENESS TEAM – M. GLEASON No report. B. RECREATION TEAM – L. SCADDEN D. Cowdrey reported that she went on a camping trip at Hapuna Beach Park during the July 4 weekend with one of the participants that she works with at Goodwill Industries. The restrooms have been recently remodeled and were made accessible. The cabins were also remodeled so the doors are wider. However, when the participant went to use the new low level shower, the shower came out in a straight stream like a pressure washer.There was no adjustment to make it a fine Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer spray and it hurt the participant. Therefore, the participant had to use the regular shower. L. Tobosa suggested that D. Cowdrey contact A. Mitchener on this issue. C. TRANSPORTATION TEAM – B. WHITNEY No report. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. VOLUNTEER PARKING VIOLATION ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM UPDATE – SGT. D. VERIATO No report. B. UPDATE FROM DCAB – C. FLEMING/N. OLESEN/C. TOWNSEND The September report from Francine Wai, Executive Director of DCAB, was distributed to MCPD members. C. ADA COORDINATOR’S REPORT – T. SPINOLA-CAMPBELL The ADA Coordinator’s Report for June, July, and August 2006 was distributed to MCPD members. D. PARKS AND RECREATION REPORT – A. MITCHENER No report. E. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS – L. SCADDEN No report. NEW BUSINESS A. ELECTION OF OFFICERS J. Souza made a motion to defer this item to the next meeting when more members are present. D. Cowdrey seconded the motion. The motion was passed. B. COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP At the last meeting, L. Scadden asked MCPD to discuss committee membership because the committee has not been able to make quorum with some members not attending the meeting. He suggested at some of the members resigning and possibly getting new members. However, MCPD indicated that the committee had a difficult time recruiting new members from Kona. T. Yamanaka will inquire on B. Whitney’s commitment to MCPD since she has not been attending the meetings. T. Yamanaka offered to send an email to MCPD members inquiring about their commitment to the committee. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON NON-AGENDA ISSUES K. Kotaki reported that the Elderly Activities Division/Coordinated Services for the Elderly (EAD/CSE) has requested a total of $80,000 grant in aid from the State Legislature for the purpose of purchasing one mini ramp van for the North/South Hilo District and one eight passenger mini van for the North/South Kona District to service the homeless and disabled elderly. EAD/CSE has requested through the Department of 2 Parks and Recreation that Mayor H. Kim send a memo to Governor L. Lingle to release the funds of $80,000 appropriated in Housing Omnibus Bill for the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation for transportation for the homeless and disabled. EAD/CSE is working with the Department of Parks and Recreation to finalize all actions and correspondence needed in receiving the $80,000. ANNOUNCEMENTS The next meeting will be held on Friday, October 6, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. in the Kona Mayor’s Office conference room.
