ADA Coordinator Activities
May 2008
ADA - Title II & S. 504
Advised Department of Public Works that automatic entry door into
Aupuni Center Conference Room was not working;
Asked departments announcing public meetings or announcing events in
County newsletter and newspaper to include notice of availability of
auxiliary aids;
Assisted Director of Public Works with an issue relating to a resident with a
disability;
Drafted a Memorandum for Director’s signature regarding use of
Telephone Relay Service;
Researched ADA requirements for portable luas and gave information to
a Parks and Recreation employee;
Recommended that Parks and Recreation modify a policy in order to
inject a Summer Fun participant with an Epi-pen in the event of an allergic
reaction to peanuts;
Discussed our experience with toilet trailers with a Maui County Parks
Planner;
Discussed complaint from County resident that Hele - On buses will not go
to pier in Hilo with Mass Transit Administrator and advised there are no
ADA regulations for “ferry piers”. Taxi companies are responsible to
provide accessible transportation service;
Forwarded a request for “passive” pedestrian signals to head of Traffic
Division and also conducted research on the available technology;
Forwarded a suggestion from a Major in the Kona Police Department
that the state should have temporary disability parking placards available
for tourists who forget theirs to the Disability and Communication Access
Board;
Informed Director of Parks and Recreation and Parks Planner that a
county resident who uses a wheelchair requested an accessible ramp to
a pavilion at Leleiwi Park;
Provided information regarding procurement of Sign Language
Interpreters to a department;
Sent County resident information regarding a state law that makes it a
crime to harm or interfere with a Service Dog;
Sent Mass Transit Agency copies of ADA Motorcoach Booklet and Rights
and Responsibilities of Transit Customers with Disabilities;
Attended Beach Day at Kahalu’u Beach Park to ascertain the benefits of
Mobi Mat usage on the beach;
Met with Parks and Recreation employees to discuss purchase of 4 all-
terrain wheel chairs;
Followed up on complaints related to lack of accessibility at Territorial
Building and drafted a Memorandum to Department of Public Works to
Director;
Drafted Memorandum for Director’s signature on upcoming Design for All
Conference in Honolulu in October;

Discussed Assistance Dog Public Access Test with a dog trainer in Oahu
and followed up with a locally based dog trainer;
Followed up with Finance Department on updating Rule No. 20 regarding
certification of Service Dogs.
Title I
Hosted a webinar from the Job Accommodation Network on “Multiple
Chemical Sensitivities in the Workplace”;
Responded to two inquiries regarding the employer’s duty to
accommodate in the workplace.
Title III
Visited East Hawaii Cultural center with Deputy Corporation Counsel to
review ADA improvements.
