HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-08-01 Committee on People with Disabilities Minutes-adaattch ADA Coordinator Activities July 2008 ADA - Title II & S. 504 Disability Rights Hawaii forwarded a complaint from a resident that certain sidewalks in Hilo are inaccessible; wrote to complainant to get more information, but letter was returned; Responded to an inquiry from Public Relations Specialist in Department of Public Works regarding usage of booklet, “Making Temporary Events Accessible.”; Reviewed sample application for paratransit services for Administrator – Mass Transit and provided comments; Followed up with individual who could not use new wheelchair lift at Kona Community Aquatic Center and raised maintenance issues regarding temporary lift with Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Division; Tried to find a person in Kailua-Kona who requested accessible pedestrian signals from Traffic Division, but was unsuccessful; Forwarded a complaint regarding no sidewalk on Kapiolani St. at Ponahawai in Hilo to Engineering Division in Public Works; Drafted comments on service animals to submit to Department of Justice during proposed rulemaking to Title II regulations; Discussed use of “Segways” as mobility aids with Mass Transit Administrator and forwarded him Department of Transportation’s information on the subject; Tested an all terrain wheelchair (Hippocampe) at Richardson’s Ocean Beach Park with Recreation Specialist and Battalion Chief – Water Safety Officers; Met with an individual who requested a modification to a traffic light so he could push the button for the pedestrian signal with the footrest of his wheelchair to test a prototype; Consulted with Bill Hecker, ADA expert, on various issues regarding the Department of Parks and Recreation Transition Plan, Curb Cuts Transition Plan and maintenance of sidewalks; Listened to a web cast on ADA rules with other County employees; Participated in a meeting regarding ADA improvements to East Hawaii Cultural Center; Informed a County resident that Stipulated Agreement in Russell v. the County of Hawaii (curb cuts) prohibited us from doing an inventory of sidewalks and a sidewalk Transition Plan. Title III Concluded investigation of a medical facility in Kailua-Kona for non- compliant ADA parking with no findings to support violation of the County Code; sent letter to complainant, who subsequently spoke to property owners and resolved the issue himself; Responded to an inquiry from an individual who asked about services for people with disabilities; ADA Coordinator’s Report July 2008 Page 2 of 2 Discussed with Fair Housing Officer how denial of lease agreement with an individual who was too heavy could possibly be discrimination based upon a protected class.
