ADA Coordinator Activities
April 2008
ADA - Title II & S. 504
Provided general information about the laws regarding “service dogs” to
a County resident;
Provided information regarding procurement of Sign Language
Interpreters to a department;
Reminded those advertising events for the public in County Newsletter to
include a paragraph telling the public that Auxiliary Aids are available
and to give contact information to request Auxiliary Aids;
Asked editor of County Newsletter to remind departments to include
notice of Auxiliary Aids when they announce public meetings;
Discussed placement of bus stops for Hele -On System with Mass Transit
Administrator;
Provided Mass Transit Office with information regarding the laws on
service animals;
Met with a County resident to discuss harassment in public housing
because of her service dogs and referred her to our Fair Housing Officer at
Office of Housing and Community Development for further assistance;
Contacted the East Hawaii Cultural Center regarding their lease, ADA
improvements to the facility, and arranged a meeting with staff from
EHCC, Corporation Counsel and me;
Met with staff from Finance, Public Works, Parks and Recreation and
Corporation Counsel to discuss how to manage procurement of items
related to requests for modifications;
Contacted ADA consultant, Bill Hecker, for “Construction Tolerances”
authorized by the Court for Transition Plan Projects and forwarded them to
Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Corporation Counsel;
Continued to work on beach access issues with Alisa Mitchener, ADA
Specialist for Parks and Recreation, particularly Hippocampe wheelchairs
and Mobi mats;
Contacted Fire Chief regarding possible role of lifeguards in making
beach wheelchairs available to the public;
Advised Public Works that a construction crew that closed the sidewalk
while working on the Judiciary Building did not provide an alternate
accessible route; all inspectors were reminded to enforce this requirement
when there is construction or other work being done in the public right of
way.
Title I
Gave information regarding resources to a woman who alleged her
husband was not being accommodated by his employer (a private
company).

Title III
Referred a condo property manager who wanted information regarding
the requirements for levered outside door handles to U.S. Access Board,
Department of Justice Technical Assistance Line, and Fair Housing Officer
with Office of Housing and Community Development;
Gave information re accessibility consultants in the State to a non-profit
agency.
