APPROVAL OF AGENDA N. Kelly moved to approve the agenda as submitted. J. Coburn seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES K. Nova moved to approve the December 15, 2006 minutes. N. Kelly seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURERS REPORT The treasurers report was circulated. C. Kitaoka reported that CSW has not received the bill from the Hilton Waikoloa Village for the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference. C. Kitaoka moved to accept the treasurers report. J. Coburn seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) meeting agenda for February 16, 2007 E. Letter from CSW informing B. Green, American Association of University Women, regarding the committees recommendation for the Math/Science Conference for 7th grade girls in East Hawaii F. Invitation from HSCSW celebrating Womens History Month 2007 and The 35TH Anniversary of Title IX on March 22, 2007 at Washington Place on Oahu. Dr. Donnis Thompson, a trailblazing pioneer of the Womens Athletics Program, will be honored. C. Kitaoka reported that she may be attending this reception representing CSW since she will be on Oahu attending another meeting. REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory D. Pung reported that Charlene Iboshi came to a Zonta Club meeting and she spoke about womens issues. She brought a packet of things to pass out and D. Pung recognized the UrgentServices Directory in the packet. 2. First Female Booklet J. Coburn said she would like CSW members to provide names of particular individuals that should be included in the First Female Booklet, e.g. people who were advocates as well as the first female judge in the county. She suggested that CSW members email a biography and photo of the particular individual. 3. Essay Contest C. Kitaoka reported that the awards luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, March 4, 2007, at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. She would like CSW members to assist with the program such as the recognition of teachers, recognition of principals, and the invocation. K. Peters offered to do the recognition of teachers and M. Masunaga will be asked to do the recognition of principals. C. Kitaoka will find someone to do the invocation. N. Kelly offered to assist C. Kitaoka with the presentation of awards. C. Kitaoka said that leis will be given to the 12 winners, Mayor, Council Chairman, and the €Real Woman. D. Pung agreed to order the leis at EbesugawaSistersfor$5.50perlei.J.Vierneswillprovidethetotalleicountto D. Pung. 2 C. Kitaoka stated that the teacher of 1st place students will receive a $100 gift certificate. Other gifts will be given to the teachers of 2nd place and 3rd place students and a decision needs to be made what to give these teachers. Three teachers are winning two places (1st and 2nd place for Grades 5-6, 1st and 2nd place for Grades 7-8, and 1st and 3rd place for Grades 9-10). The winners will receive a savings bond. After some discussion, CSW decided to give the teachers a Borders gift card ($100 for first place, $30 for second place, and $20 for third place). C. Kitaoka suggested that the students submit their essays on a disk for next year to eliminate the counting of the essays. There were some essays that did not go to judging because they were over the 300-word limit so they were disqualified. The 300-word limit is explained in the rules given out to the schools. CSW agreed. C. Kitaoka said that the lunch will cost approximately $30 per person, but CSW willchargeotherpeoplewhoattend$25perperson.CSWwillincurexpenses for the winners, their parents, real woman, teachers, principals, judges, CSW members and staff, ex-officios, essay counters, and dignitaries. The menu will consist of oriental chicken salad, tossed green salad, chicken katsu or teriyaki chicken, rice, vegetables, vanilla ice cream with toppings, and fruit punch. 4. Mentoring Tabled. 5. Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame N. Kelly provided three possible dates to schedule the Womens Hall of Fame in the Waters Edge Ballroom at the Hilton Waikoloa Village: September 29, 2007, October 6, 2007, or October 13, 2007. The cost of the dinner and food will be the same as last year. CSW chose October 6, 2007 as the date to have the event. K. Peters agreed to find six identical crystal vases for the awards. 6.EqualPay D. Pung reported that she emailed Annelle Amaral inquiring about doing a presentation in April 2007. She will follow up with a phone call to A. Amaral since she received no response. B. Health 1. Womens Health Month Tabled. C. Liaison 1.HSCSW Tabled. 3 D. Pung reported that the HSCSW is looking for a commissioner to replace M. Masunaga whose second term as commissioner for Hawaii County will be ending June 30, 2007. The commissioner is a Governor appointed position, however anyone may submit an application. 2. Legislative Update Tabled. D. Marketing 1. Newsletter J. Coburn asked CSW members to submit a 50-word bio of themselves and a photograph. The deadline to submit the bio and photo is March 15. E. Community Reports None. UNFINISHED BUSINES A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference K. Nova reported that Councilmember Brenda Ford will be attending the next Kona meeting in June. CSW can inquire about possible funding from B. Ford on the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative. C. Kitaoka suggested that CSW obtain Dr. Jill Murray as the main speaker at a future conference. K. Nova said that CSW could make Dr. J. Murray do many events and she could do something at the schools, for parents, etc. Dr. J. Murray said she will do two or three things a day and the committee owns her from the minute she lands. However, her speakers fee is $3,500 a day. CSW felt that a co-sponsorship of sources would help cover the speakers fee. J. Coburn suggested that CSW come up with a fee for independent high schools. N.KellymentionedthatthereissomefundingfromtheDepartmentofAttorney Generals Office, Violence Against Women Act Grant if Dr. J. Murray addressed domestic violence on adult women. N. Kelly and K. Nova agreed to brainstorm on ideas and report back to CSW. B. Math/Science Conference for 7th Grade Girls D. Pung reported that she drafted a letter to B. Green and offered the committees recommendation. N. Kelly suggested that CSW meet with Councilmember Emily Naeole for assistance. D. Pung suggested that she, B. Green, and N. Kelly meet withE.Naeoleandbrainstormsomeideas. NEWBUSINESS None. 4 ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next Meeting D. Pung reminded CSW members to make every effort to attend the meeting. Last year, CSW had to cancel two meetings due to lack of quorum. CSW was criticized in the past because the committee hardly had any meetings due to lack of a quorum. The next meeting will be held on Friday, March 16, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in the Kona Mayors Office conference room. B. Schedules J. Coburn and N. Kelly will be unable to attend the March meeting.
