UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A.First Female Board – J. Balberde-Kamalii
J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that the supplies have been purchased and Ben
Franklin Crafts will be assisting her with the board. However, there are some
pictures that are missing and the committee needs to check to make sure of the life
spans of the women. CSW members offered to research the missing photos and
forward it to her or J. Viernes. She would like to complete the board before the
women’s hall of fame.
K. Nova stated that CSW has discussed this issue before and if the pictures are not
available, then a photo will not be displayed. C. Kitaoka added that the pictures that
CSW members could get were given to A. Mejia at the time. N. Kelly said that she
2
also tried to obtain a picture from the Department of Public Safety and she couldn’t
get it.
J. Balberde-Kamalii said that the updated information on the boards would be used
to update the booklet. The format for the boards is to be able to keep adding items
on the board. If there are additional pictures, then another board could be
purchased and use it as a supplement.
J. Balberde-Kamalii said that the women’s hall of fame board will be done as a
plaque style since CSW does not have pictures of all the winners.
B.Essay Contest – C. Kitaoka
J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that she will obtain the names of the English teachers
for East Hawaii and possibly West Hawaii after school starts in August.
C.Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame – C. Ka-ipo
A. Mejia reported that Melveen Leed was informed about CSW’s decision to have
entertainment done by someone else.
N. Kelly, K. Nova, K. Peters, and D. Pung volunteered to be the judges. CSW
developed criteria which will be used for the judging. The deadline for nominations
is August 20, 2010. It was decided to do a conference call on August 25 at
4:00 p.m.
C. Kitaoka offered to contact Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and follow up on the setup
fee. J. Viernes said she received special room rates for $129 per night plus tax and
the contract.
K. Peters suggested that CSW find out from C. Ka-ipo whether she will continue to
chair this event or not. CSW needs to know her decision and respect her wishes
before anyone takes further action. A. Mejia offered to contact C. Ka-ipo to get an
update and report back to CSW by this afternoon.
J. Viernes mentioned that she received a song list from entertainer, Maelan Abran.
CSW suggested that they review the list so the members can make their own
selection.
D.Voter Registration Booth – K. Schneider
K. Schneider reported that she did a voter registration booth at the Fourth of July
parade with the League of Women Voters. Hale Halawai was full of booths of
politicians. Secondly, she has secured a booth at the Kona Village Stroll on Alii
Drive. The dates are Sunday, July 18; Sunday, August 22; and Sunday,
September 19. Those dates were chosen because the registration deadline for the
primary is August 19 and the registration deadline for the general is October 4.
The set up takes place between 12:30 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. and break down is
6:00 p.m. K. Schneider is looking for volunteers to help during that timeline for a few
3
hours. The exact booth location will be determined until a week before the event
because they will prioritize people that have been coming regularly and give them
the spots that they want. Cars are allowed to drop off materials between 12:30 p.m.
and 12:45 p.m. and then they will allow the car back in between 6:00 p.m. and
6:15 p.m. to break down. They have secure parking for everyone that has booths
behind the old theater. She explained the parking situation during this event.
K. Nova said that the Kona Village Stroll has a different crowd than the Fourth of
July. There is music with a variety of bands. K. Schneider added that the Palace is
open and the location draws in the crowd. It may draw in a lot of tourist.
K. Schneider said she is looking for a pop up tent for shade, approximately a 10X10
tent because booth spaces are not to exceed 10' x 10'. A. Mejia offered her tent, but
she needs to check on the dimensions first. Interested members were asked to
come for a few hours or an early or a late shift.
The League of Women Voters has said to let them know what CSW needs so
K. Schneider can start doing a coalition with them. The League is going to do a
booth two days right before the primary so they are doing August 18 and 19 at
Kmart. The League of Women Voters doesn’t do very much voter registration in Hilo
because Hilo gets a lot of people registering already. Kona seems to not have as
much people registering because you need to register when you move and there is a
little more transient population in Kona. K. Schneider suggested that CSW take a
handful of applications that they can distribute to people that they run into and talk to
at work as well.
K. Peters suggested utilizing the UH West Hawaii campus and register the new
students in the parking lot during the first day of classes. K. Schneider mentioned
that you can now register starting at age 16, but you cannot vote until age 18.
K. Peters indicated that since CSW has a booth, then the committee should use the
booth for public relations and show what they are doing. If electricity is available,
she would bring a TV and DVD player and play the teen dating violence video for
any passerby. K. Schneider said the Urgent Services Directory for Families will be
available and CSW can distribute information about the committee.
N. Kelly said that she has leftover pens and key chains from the teen dating violence
conference to use as giveaways. The books from Dr. Jill Murray can also be on
display and may be sold to interested people.
E.Teen Dating Violence Prevention
C. Kitaoka reported that they will have an event at the Kona Village Stroll on July 18.
N. Kelly reported that they had planned to distribute sets of books to the middle and
high schools accompanied by a letter. C. Kitaoka suggested including information in
4
the letter about bringing the play to the schools if they wanted. K. Peters suggested
giving the books to the counselors and behavioral health specialists.
J. Balberde-Kamalii recommended giving the books to the at-risk counselors and the
drop out prevention program counselors because they are the people who would
review and implement it as much as possible. She also suggested the alternative
learning programs because they would incorporate it into their curriculum. In
addition, she suggested that CSW attend a faculty staff meeting in the beginning of
the school year to explain the distribution of the books.
CSW suggested that each member call who they know to determine where to send
the books.
F.Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia
A. Mejia reported that she would like to set up presentations at Kealakehe,
Konawaena, Pahoa, Hilo High School, and St. Joseph School in September or
October.
