Kelly also submitted a written report which was reviewed by CSW. E. Cabatu said that the equal pay radio spots will be paid by the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW). J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that she have high school students who are living in homes without electricity, food, or water because their parents have been laid off or their jobs have been cut back. She would like to propose putting something out in the Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer community about coming together and getting the students back in school because the school serves breakfast and lunch. School is a stable environment for students from th kindergarten to 12 grade. She suggested doing an educational campaign/event just to tell the community what is going on. J. Balberde-Kamalii mentioned that Hilo High School’s profile shows that 30 percent of the students live in single family, female headed household. Also, a majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. She was looking for support for these families in terms of resources that are available as well as trying to find counseling/support services that can be offered at a reduced rate. Funding is needed to create information packets of numbers for people to call. K. Nova felt that CSW is not allowed to provide money to individual families. C. Ka-ipo suggested that CSW do a factual, hard hitting awareness spot on the radio and in the newspaper to get attention. J. Balberde-Kamalii said that CSW should generate some kind of “talk story” interview or radio spot that highlight this community issue. K. Schneider said people want to help, but how would we know how to get to certain groups or families to help them? How can community groups help people in the community because people want to do that, but they don’t know how? There are many church groups that really want to help. E. Cabatu mentioned that Women’s Health Week is coming up in May. Women also make the health care decisions of the family. C. Kitaoka expressed concern that printing of a booklet will not be completed by the end of the school year. In addition, approval is needed with the Complex Area Superintendents in order to send information home from the schools. She didn’t feel that this project will happen this fiscal year. C. Ka-ipo felt that awareness should be done first before sending any type of information home. CSW decided to focus on Women’s Health Week in May by doing radio spots. C. Ka-ipo and E. Cabatu will work on the script. The cost of the radio spots will be approximately $1,600 which will be aired on all the major radio stations. The committee would like Kat from KWXX to do the spot and C. Ka-ipo would like prominent women in the community to do different spots relating to health. C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the treasurer’s report. C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. The Mayor’s Office Public Relations Specialist, Desiree Cruz, is a possible candidate to emcee the program as well as sing. C. Ka-ipo said she will ask Jade Moon first to emcee and she can follow up with Melveen Leed. 5.Equal Pay E. Cabatu reported that the ad is running and there are two rotating ads. One is with her sister, Moani, and the other is her sister, Moani, and her friend. The ad is being paid by the HSCSW. 3 B.Health 1.Women’s Health Month E. Cabatu will work on the script. The motion was passed. C.Liaison 1.HSCSW E. Cabatu reported that the next meeting will be held on June 10, 2010. E. Cabatu reported that she received an email from the consultant, Kwai-Chang Publico. He proposes “learn more on how to be a part of the W.A.V.E. – Women and Voting Ewareness,” set up logo and print t-shirts to give out, create a website or facebook/twitter page and first number of “friends or followers” receive free shirt along with free voting registry info packet, piggy back on three events in Hilo with Fearless Hawaiian Enterprises and set up voter registry at these events. She suggested that Kwai-Chang Publico run the campaign out of his facebook site to invite his friends and followers to participate and then they pick up the t-shirt at his shop. CSW suggested that E. Cabatu check with Corporation Counsel to determine if there is no conflict of interest in promoting his brand. E. Cabatu contacted Renee Schoen, Deputy Corporation Counsel, for a legal opinion to see if there is a conflict. R. Schoen called back and informed CSW that there is no problem with CSW co-sponsoring the campaign. However, E. Cabatu needs to get two other verbal quotes. K. Schneider moved that CSW co-sponsor the W.A.V.E. campaign with Fearless Hawaiian, Kwai Chang Publico, contingent on approval from Corporation Counsel. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion was passed. E. Cabatu said that the HSCSW informed her to not to worry about purchasing things now for later because there is a new upcoming budget. K. Schneider reported that she contacted AAUW and the League of Women Voters and they both do voter registration drives the month before the election. They are both willing to help in any way that they can with anything the committee wants to do earlier. There is no longer a need to have someone trained to be at the table. One reason they were at Kmart instead of Wal Mart is because certain times conflicted with other commitments Wal Mart had made. Furthermore, they talked about looking at events that CSW could be part of that would draw crowds of people. K. Schneider said she thought about the Kona 4 Village Stroll. They have a monthly event that runs on Sunday, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Alii Drive. Alii Drive is closed down and there are music, vendors, etc. If CSW wants to have a table, then the committee needs to fill out an application to be approved by the board when they meet. The cost is $30 for a booth. K. Schneider said that another event that CSW could consider for a voter st registration table is the 1 annual Hawaii Island Gay Pride Parade. Their booths are by donation and they accept everybody. The parade is scheduled for June 26, 2010 in Kailua Kona. K. Schneider said the League of Women Voters also brought up the need to create a brochure that would be able to direct people to websites where they could study the issue prior to the election. E. Cabatu mentioned that the committee needs to look at more events that gather lots of people such as the KWXX Hoolaulea in Hilo. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested the Fourth of July parades. K. Schneider said that AAUW and the League of Women Voters are open to CSW piggy backing with them. They are also willing to help with manpower for CSW’s events. K. Nova stated that CSW needs to decide if the committee wants to put any focus on it now or do they want to do voter registration closer to the actual voting day. She suggested that CSW keep their ears open for events and that K. Schneider spearhead this project. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that CSW submit a letter to the Kona Village Stroll board requesting permission for the third quarter. K. Schneider agreed to write the letter. 2.Legislative Update E. Cabatu referred CSW to check the legislative website for any updates. D.Community Reports None. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A.Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference C. Kitaoka suggested changing this heading to “teen dating violence prevention.” CSW agreed. C. Kitaoka suggested collaborating with N. Kelly in finding a meaningful way to distribute the books and the DVDs. There was some discussion that N. Kelly and her group wanted to bring Dr. Jill Murray back for a presentation. 5 J. Balberde-Kamalii mentioned that a student at Hilo High School, Maria Gacula, researched, wrote, and produced a play on teen dating violence for her senior project. M. Gacula premiered the play and it reached approximately 400 students. The play was also videotaped. The response from the students was very encouraging because they reacted emotionally. J. Balberde-Kamalii said they are asking M. Gacula permission to get a copy of the video so they can forward it to the National Senior Project Institute. CSW requested that J. Balberde-Kamalii obtain a copy of the DVD for the committee to review and consider making it part of a traveling ensemble next year. B.Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia Tabled. NEW BUSINESS None.
