TREASURER’S REPORT
The treasurer’s report was circulated.
N. Kelly reported that upcoming expenditures are the “Real Women” creative writing
competition and the radio spots.
K. Nova stated that CSW needs to determine future meetings because of mileage costs
since there are three meetings left in the fiscal year and CSW members have been paid
for mileage in the past to attend the essay contest. Some CSW members said they will
not be submitting a mileage claim for the essay contest this year.
Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
E. Cabatu agreed to utilize funding from the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of
Women (HSCSW) for the equal pay radio spots for $1,665.00. K. Peters indicated that
$1,600, which is a portion of the $3,000-$4,000 funding from the HSCSW, can be
designated to equal pay legislation and the majority of it can be used towards the “get
out the vote” campaign.
J. Viernes reported that the following are current expenses for the essay contest:
Borders gift cards - $900; spiral binding combs - $16.67; lunch – 57 adults @ $25, 6
children @ $19.
C. Kitaoka stated that Big Island Candies donated gifts and they will be given to the
“Real Women,” Mayor’s representative, and council representative so the committee will
not be purchasing leis.
N. Kelly said that she will have a better determination of CSW’s budget after the essay
contest. In addition, committee members should be carpooling for the next few
meetings and the committee should limit the cost of lunch per person. C. Kitaoka added
that there will be no mileage claim if CSW members rode in a county car with N. Kelly or
herself.
D. Pung moved to accept the treasurer’s report. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The
motion was passed.

1.Urgent Services Directory
J. Viernes reported that she received a proposal from a UHH student who is
willing to update the directory as a school project.
2.First Female Booklet
After some discussion, J. Balberde-Kamalii offered to ask Ben Franklin Crafts to
help put together the display board for CSW. K. Peters offered to edit the
booklet.
J. Balberde-Kamalii questioned the purpose and the intent of the booklet. Where
would the board be displayed and what population will be targeted? D. Pung
responded that the board will be displayed at the Women’s Hall of Fame and at
all of CSW’s events.

3.Essay Contest
C. Kitaoka reported that some of the winners are unable to attend and she asked
if CSW members can read their essays at the luncheon. J. Balberde-Kamalii,
A. Mejia, and K. Schneider volunteered to read the essays.
E. Cabatu suggested that the equal pay radio spots be previewed at the
luncheon.
4.Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
Tabled.
J. Balberde-Kamalii asked if CSW wanted a traveling display board for the
Women’s Hall of Fame. CSW suggested putting the names of the winners if
photos are not available. Any information or photos should be submitted to
J. Balberde-Kamalii.
J. Balberde-Kamalii said she does not have a budget for this project, but she will
ask for guidance from a friend at Ben Franklin Crafts with the current materials
that she has. She offered to complete this project by the end of July.
5.Equal Pay
E. Cabatu reported that New West Broadcasting, Corp. (KWXX, B97, KPUA) will
be doing the radio spots from April 14-20, 2010. She will ask the HSCSW if they
can pay for the entire amount.
B.Health
1.Women’s Health Month
Tabled.
N. Kelly pointed out that CSW needs to keep in mind that the committee’s
program objectives states that they will participate in Women’s Health Month by
coordinating at least one event in East and West Hawaii.
E. Cabatu reported that CSW agreed to partner with Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi for
their Ladies Night Out event which will be held in Kona and on the first week of
October in Hilo.
E. Cabatu suggested issuing a PSA script and shop it around. N. Kelly
suggested having a table at Celebrate Your Family "Cherish the Child" Family
Event scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2010 at Sangha Hall in Hilo. The Urgent
Services Directory can be distributed at this event and K. Peters offered to do
depression screening. K. Nova and C. Kitaoka offered to do an event in Kona.
C.Liaison
1.HSCSW
E. Cabatu reported that she met with Kwai-Chang Publico, a promoter and owner
of Fearless Hawaiian, about helping the committee encourage our younger,
female population to register to vote and to actually follow through and vote in the
3
coming election. He puts on events which attract young crowds and CSW may
want to piggyback on his events and have an information table.
K. Peters said she checked with Costco about setting up a display table and it’s a
manager’s decision. However, a letter needs to be submitted by CSW. Kona
Commons and Crossroads have an application that needs to be completed.
C. Kitaoka offered to contact Wal Mart in Kona.
E. Cabatu stated that the money needs to be spent by June 30, 2010, but voting
is in November. However, she will check to see whether the radio spots can be
paid up front, but schedule to run in the fall.
K. Schneider said that she will ask AAUW where they will set up their table
because they do that every year as well and it doesn’t make sense for CSW to
set up right after they are done. In the past, the League of Women Voters has
collaborated with AAUW. She knows that a trained person has to be present.
2.Legislative Update
E. Cabatu reported that the HSCSW has approved to pay Brenda Olcott to share
her story as part of the human trafficking/teen prostitution bill.
D.Community Reports
None.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A.Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference

the DVD will be given to each CSW member.
