APPROVAL OF AGENDA A. Mejia moved to amend the agenda by adding New Business, Children’s Justice Center. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES D. Pung moved to approve the January 22, 2010 minutes. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURER’S REPORT The treasurer’s report was circulated. J. Viernes reported that the only upcoming expenditure is the “Real Women” creative writing competition in March. D. Pung asked why is there a budget for telephone and if the committee ever used it. Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer D. Pung moved to accept the treasurer’s report. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. CORRESPONDENCE A.Thank you card from Kitty Lyons, Holualoa Elementary School teacher regarding the “Real Women” creative writing competition REPORTS A.Education 1.Urgent Services Directory J. Viernes reported that people/organizations contact her if they want copies of the directory. A. Mejia said that she dropped off a bunch of directories at UH Hilo and the Hawaii Community College. J. Balberde-Kamalii said that she distributed the directories to school based therapists in the Hilo complex. 2.First Female Booklet A. Mejia and D. Pung will work together on the display board and have it ready for display at the essay contest awards ceremony even though it’s not complete. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that CSW ask Ben Franklin Crafts to put together the display board as a community service project. She will inquire with a friend who is a buyer at the store regarding this project. 3.Essay Contest The deadline to turn in the RSVP postcard is March 12, 2010. C. Kitaoka reported that everything is all set up for the essay contest awards luncheon scheduled for Sunday, March 21, 2010, from 10:30 a.m. at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. She asked CSW members to be present half an hour before the event start. The emcee will be E. Cabatu. E. Cabatu inquired whether the radio spots for equal pay day can be previewed at the luncheon and C. Kitaoka said it was okay. J. Balberde-Kamalii offered to help C. Kitaoka follow up with the principal of a th 12 grade student who wrote a questionable essay. 4.Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame A. Mejia shared some sample awards from Trophy Case for CSW members to look at. The awards price range from $17 to $40. 2 A. Mejia suggested that CSW request from the Mayor a letter of appreciation for entertainer Melveen Leed for her years of service. A. Mejia stated that they are looking at having the event either in September or October at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. 5.Equal Pay E. Cabatu reported that New West Broadcasting, Corp. (KWXX, B97, KPUA) is proposing 105 spots with matching spots for a total of 210 spots for $1,640.61 or 420 spots for two weeks for $3,281.23. Pacific Radio Group (KBIG, KAPA, Native FM) is proposing 63 spots for $1,665.00. The Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) has funding of $3,000 to $4,000 for each county to “get out the vote.” This will involve some women’s group to go outside of Wal Mart in Hilo or Kona and register people to vote or hold an event. E. Cabatu suggested that the funding can also be used for radio spots for Women’s Health Week in May. Furthermore, the money needs to be spent by June 30, 2010. K. Peters suggested partnering with student civic groups to come out and register young people to vote. K. Schneider pointed out that when she talks to women about voting, especially the ones that have not registered and have not voted and she asks them why, their response is because they don’t know the issues. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested co-sponsoring an event with UH Hilo and invite 18 year old high school students, community college students, etc. to attend. K. Peters moved to spend $1,640.61 (210 spots) for the New West Broadcasting Corp. package from April 12-18, 2010. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. After some discussion, E. Cabatu and K. Peters agreed to work on the script. CSW suggested having a spot for Hilo and a popular high school guy reading the script for Kona. The motion was passed. B.Health 1.Women’s Health Month E. Cabatu reported that CSW agreed to partner with Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi for their Ladies Night Out event which will be held on the first week of October. C.Liaison 1.HSCSW E. Cabatu reported that she will inform the HSCSW that CSW will gladly accept the $3,000 to $4,000 and spend it wisely. E. Cabatu suggested that CSW do a radio spot saying “get out the vote.” She asked if CSW members can get the Kona women to do outreach in Kona and the 3 Hilo women to do outreach in Hilo and make two packets of information available. K. Peters will check with Costco and Kona Commons and E. Cabatu will contact Wal Mart and KTA in Hilo to see if a display table can be set up. J. Balberde-Kamalii mentioned that Keauhou Shopping Center is another great location to consider because it draws the local community. E. Cabatu stated that she will check with the HSCSW to see whether the radio spots can be paid up front to run in September when school gets back in session. K. Peters said there must be some form of enticement in order to catch the young people to vote. For example, register to vote and register to win the iPod. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested finding local celebrities (musicians, Kat from KWXX) to do a 30 second ad saying “Hi, I’m this person and I vote, what about you”? K. Nova stated that CSW can decide if they need subcommittees at the next meeting. 2.Legislative Update E. Cabatu reported that the package is out and package is rolling. D.Community Reports None. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A.Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference Tabled. B.Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia A. Mejia reported that a teens internet protection presentation was held at thth Keonepoko Elementary School for 4 to 6 graders on February 2. A request is being made to have a presentation for parents and faculty. NEW BUSINESS A.Human Trafficking/Teen Prostitution – Brenda Olcott, Guest speaker B. Olcott described her personal experience about her daughter, Meghan Olcott, who was a victim of human trafficking/teen prostitution. B.Children’s Justice Center A. Mejia reported that Terri Lum, Program Director, Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii, is requesting letters of support from agencies and the community to have their budget maintained. After some discussion A. Mejia moved that CSW will send a letter of support for the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii. J. Balberde- Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion was passed with K. Peters abstaining. J. Viernes will email a draft copy of the support letter to CSW members for review and comments. 4 ANNOUNCEMENTS A.Next Meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, March 19, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in the Kona Mayor’s Office conference room.
