COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
A. Mejia moved to approve the agenda as submitted. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. The
motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
D. Pung moved to approve the December 11, 2009 minutes. A. Mejia seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The treasurer’s report was circulated.
N. Kelly reported that the only significant event coming up is the “Real Women” creative
writing competition in March. Estimated expenditures will be approximately $3,500. She
suggested that CSW think about what to do with the remaining balance of $2,000.
N. Kelly said that she prepared a draft six month progress report on program objectives for
fiscal year 2009-10. A final progress report will be distributed to CSW members.

C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the treasurer’s report. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion
was passed.

A.Letter from Mayor Billy Kenoi to Council Chairman J Yoshimoto and Members of the
County Council appointing Kimberly Schneider and JoAnne Balberde-Kamalii and

A.Education
1.Urgent Services Directory
No report.
2.First Female Booklet
A. Mejia and D. Pung will work together on the display board and have it ready for
display at the essay contest awards ceremony.
C. Kitaoka asked by telephone if CSW wanted to participate in an event on Oahu in
April and put up the committee’s display board. She will obtain more information and
report back to the committee.
3.Essay Contest
C. Kitaoka submitted three questions for the committee to answer regarding how to
award prizes, changing the prizes from savings bonds to gift cards, and a questionable

essay written by a 12 grade student.
J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that C. Kitaoka contact the principal, grade counselor,
and guidance counselor at the school regarding the student’s essay. Members
discussed whether to provide an award to the student. C. Kitaoka agreed to contact
the principal of the student’s school.
After some discussion, D. Pung moved to award only for this one time two additional

honorable mention prizes for the 5/6 grade category because there were many
thth
more entries and there were no entries for the 9/10 grade category. A. Mejia
seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
After some discussion on changing the prizes, C. Ka-ipo moved to give gift cards
instead of savings bonds to the winners and honorable mention. CSW decided to
purchase Borders gift cards because it’s educational and accessible on both sides of
the island. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed.

After some discussion, J. Balberde-Kamalii moved to retain the prizes for first place-
$100, second place-$75, third place-$50, and honorable mention-$25 for the winners
of the essay contest. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
The essay contest expenses were circulated to CSW members for review. The event
will cost approximately $2,760 or less. C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the budget for the
essay contest. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
The awards luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, March 21, 2010, from 10:30 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
CSW decided to distribute a set of books by Dr. J. Murray to the teacher and book
titled, “But I Love Him,” to the winner. Also, pens can be given to everyone.
4.Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
C. Ka-ipo reported that the committee discussed having a display of the women’s hall
of fame winners. However, the committee does not have past individual pictures or a
location to display them. N. Kelly suggested putting them on the county’s website
under the committee’s link. C. Ka-ipo and D. Pung agreed to work on this project.
A. Mejia offered to bring three sample awards from Trophy Case to the next meeting
for approval because the vases were heavy.
5.Equal Pay
CSW asked E. Cabatu to bring an estimate of the cost of the radio spots at the next
meeting for approval.
B.Health
1.Women’s Health Month
E. Cabatu suggested that CSW partner with Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi for their Ladies
Night Out event which will be held on the first week of October. The Kona side will
also be having a Ladies Night Out event.
C. Ka-ipo moved that CSW partner with Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi and the other
partners to put on a Ladies Night Out in October to celebrate Women’s Health Month.
D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
C.Liaison
1.HSCSW
E. Cabatu reported that a big event will be held on March 18, 2010 at the Governor’s
Mansion on Oahu to celebrate Women’s History Month. The county committee is
invited and she will be attending the event. The national theme is “Writing Women
Back into History.” She will check with S. Ferguson-Quick to see if they are still
soliciting input for essays of a prominent Hawaiian woman. C. Ka-ipo recommended
Dottie Thompson and D. Pung suggested Helene Hale.

2.Legislative Update
E. Cabatu reported that the Women’s Caucus was suppose to present their package
for the 2010 legislative session, but it was unavailable online to share with the
committee.
Brenda Olcott will be invited to attend the next meeting to speak about her personal
experience with human trafficking/teen prostitution in Hilo.
D.Community Reports

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A.Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
C. Kitaoka will follow up on the DVD.
B.Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia
A. Mejia reported that she coordinated a teens internet protection presentation at Keaau
elementary, intermediate and high school.Approximately 25-30 people attended.
Presenters were Officer Ed Namohala and Detective John Ancheta. Ka'u High School
also enjoyed it and it was well received.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
A.Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in the Kahilu
Theatre in Waimea.
E. Cabatu announced that she will attend a meeting with Tribune Herald reporter and
family violence interagency committee members to brief the reporter on the current state
of domestic violence prevention resources in the community on Monday, January 25,
2010, at 3:00 p.m. at the Prosecutor’s Office. C. Ka-ipo offered to attend with E. Cabatu.
N. Kelly announced that a female astronaut will be in town for Ellison Onizuka Science
Day on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
