CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:10 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
E. Takazawa moved to approve the agenda as submitted. A. Mejia seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
N. Kelly moved to approve the September 18, 2009 minutes. E. Takazawa seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The treasurer’s report was circulated.
E. Takazawa moved to accept the treasurer’s report. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The
motion was passed.

REPORTS
A.Education
1.Urgent Services Directory
CSW decided at the last meeting to publish the directory on the county website and
not print the directory.
2.First Female Booklet
A. Mejia reported that they will produce two display boards. N. Kelly and D. Pung
will assist her with putting on the pictures and caption.
C. Kitaoka stated that she met a woman who is from a women’s organization on
Oahu and they have a conference in April at the Hawaii Convention Center. This
woman provided her email if CSW wanted to participate in that event and put up the
committee’s display board. C. Kitaoka suggested that CSW make a second display
board that is portable.
3.Essay Contest
C. Kitaoka reported that the deadline to submit essays is December 11, 2009. She
will also be seeking judges for the event.In the meantime, she needs to find more
funding to help defray some of the costs. Last year’s expenditures were
approximately $6,000. She will contact Kim Higashi at the Hapuna Beach Prince
Hotel to negotiate a menu.
4.Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
C. Ka-ipo reported she is still receiving e-mail and comments about the event and
how much people enjoyed it. The thank you letters were sent out in a timely
manner to the main contributors.
C. Ka-ipo said she is looking for a photo of the four winners to publish in the
newspaper. C. Kitaoka will check with M. Masunaga. C. Ka-ipo will prepare a news
release once a photo is submitted.
A. Mejia offered to bring sample awards from Trophy Case for next year’s event
because the vases were heavy.

B.Health
1.Women’s Health Month
E. Cabatu reported that the East Hawaii Perinatal Consortium does a women’s
health week in May. She suggested that CSW have an event in Women’s Health
Month that is not labor intensive such as radio ads or do talk shows about women’s
health issues. Therefore, CSW need to decide what they want to do depending on
funding.
C.Liaison

E. Cabatu reported that she did not attend the last commission meeting. Secondly,
the U.N. Conference on Women is coming up. Also, Women’s History Month 2010

is the 30 anniversary and the national theme is “Writing Women Back into History.”
S. Ferguson-Quick would like to see a push or nomination for writing Hawaiian
women back into history and maybe CSW would like to make a suggestion or
recommendation of a Hawaiian woman.
C. Ka-ipo stated there are a lot of prominent Hawaiian females such as Queen
Emma, Princess Ruth, and Queen Liliuokalani.
2.Legislative Update
E. Cabatu reported that S. Ferguson-Quick will be meeting with the Women’s
Coalition towards the end of October or early November. The budget priority is the
family equality issue.
There will be a march, “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” scheduled for Saturday,
October 17, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence.
D.Community Reports

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A.Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
C. Kitaoka reported that the person who is copying the DVD is currently working on it.
The committee discussed the book distribution. CSW suggested distributing it to the
Hawaii Community College, public and private high schools, UHH Women’s Center,
Salvation Army-Family Intervention Program, and shelters.C. Kitaoka suggested that
a letter from CSW accompany the books and DVD, but the schools should have first
priority. N. Kelly said she will ask one of her co-workers to prepare a list of
organizations that are involved with domestic violence. The target date for distribution
of the books is by December. C. Ka-ipo will draft the letter and N. Kelly will prepare
labels for the books.
B.Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia
A. Mejia reported that she coordinated a teens internet protection presentation by
Police Officer Edwin Namohala, Jr. and Detective John Ancheta for parents from

Keaau Elementary, Middle, and High School in September.There were approximately
30 adults with some teenagers and children.
The schedule did not fit for October.But, there are two sessions scheduled for
November at Keonepoko Elementary School for sixth graders. The Police Department
will provide the segment for the sixth graders. The next presentation will be specifically
for faculty, staff, and parents.
A. Mejia said that she would like to have the teens internet protection presented at
Honokaa and Ka’u.

C. 6 Annual International Women’s Leadership Conference – K. Nova
Tabled.
D.Budget – N. Kelly
CSW reviewed a revised final status report on program objectives for FY 2008-09,
program budget for FY 2010-11, and expenditures worksheet for FY 2010-11 and the
two-year period after that.
C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the budget worksheets that were presented. A. Mejia
seconded the motion. The motion was passed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
A.Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. in the Kona
County Council conference room.
B.Schedules
