COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:10 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
D. Pung moved that the agenda be amended by adding to New Business, Nominating
Committee and that the agenda be approved as amended. M. Sherman seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
D. Pung moved to approve the April 17, 2009 minutes. C. Kitaoka seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The treasurer’s report was circulated.
C. Kitaoka moved that money be allocated for the following items: $1,400 for Urgent
Services Directory printing, $400 for display board and photos from the First Female
Booklet, $800 for two display boards for Teen Dating Violence to be circulated among
the schools, $350 for wood and glass supplies for Hall of Fame, and $100 for one
internet protection software program. D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was
passed.
STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC

CORRESPONDENCE
A. Ready to Run Campaign Training for Women, Thursday, June 3, 2009, 8:30 a.m. –
4:30 p.m., Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium, hosted by the Hawaii State Commission
on the Status of Women (HSCSW)

REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
E. Takazawa volunteered to update the directory.
2. First Female Booklet
D. Pung will follow up with price for materials for the display board and submit the
information to J. Viernes, who can purchase the requested items and then
arrange for the county carpenters to construct the display board.
3. Essay Contest
D. Pung noted that each year, one of Karen Shindo’s students has won a prize
since the inception of the essay contest and requests that K. Shindo be
recognized next year.
4. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
Tabled.
5. Equal Pay
Tabled.
B. Health
1. Women’s Health Month
K. Nova reported that she could not find a psychologist to do the depression
screening at the health fair. She also suggested that the committee have a
presence at the health fair next year.
C. Liaison

2. Legislative Update
No report.
D. Community Reports
None.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
K. Peters moved that the committee return $5,000 to the County Prosecutor’s Office.
D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was passed. C. Kitaoka moved that the
remaining money be allocated to buy copies of teen conference videos and
distribute to the schools.
C. Kitaoka circulated the list of schools, agencies, and service providers to receive
Dr. J. Murray’s books. Members were asked to update the list.

K. Nova announced that Dr. J. Murray’s interview with Sherry Bracken will air on

May 24 at 6:30 a.m.
K. Nova acknowledged member’s support of a great event with Dr. J. Murray.
B. Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia
Tabled.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Nominating Committee
K. Peters, D. Pung, and N. Kelly were nominated to the Nominating Committee.
A consensus was reached.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. in the Kona
Mayor’s Office conference room.
