CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:08 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
K. Peters moved to approve the agenda as submitted. A. Mejia seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
C. Kitaoka moved to approve the January 16, 2009 minutes. A. Mejia seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT
A revised budget status report from N. Kelly was circulated and reviewed by CSW.
K. Nova stated that only one mental health screening kit is needed so the committee will
not be expending $385.
K. Peters reported that it will cost approximately $1,000 to do a radio ad for equal pay.
CSW agreed to make a decision once E. Cabatu provides more information.
A. Mejia said she is waiting for information on teens internet protection for parents from
Detective John Ancheta since he was inquiring with a specialized person from Oahu.
There will be no cost if this person is able to do the presentation. It will be a one-day
event with East Hawaii during the day and West Hawaii in the evening. However, CSW
Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
would need to pay for hotel accommodations if this person will do a presentation in
West Hawaii in the evening. A. Mejia will provide an update at the next meeting.
M. Sherman indicated that she would like to see a presentation on internet protection for
the students in Kohala during the day. The cafeteria can be utilized for community
presentations.
The treasurer’s report was circulated. A. Mejia moved to accept the treasurer’s report.
M. Sherman seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC
J. OConnor introduced herself. She is very interested in women’s issues since she was
involved in it when she was in Alaska.

REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
No report.
2. First Female Booklet
A legal question needs to be answered from J. Mecklenburg about getting
permission to publish the photo from each person/family before CSW proceeds
with the printing of the booklet.
M. Sherman proposed an idea of having a mobile pictorial display of the women
that could be moved around to different places for particular events instead of a
booklet. CSW could send out a bid to have a professional person make a mobile
display. K. Peters thought it was a great idea because she is not sure who would
read the booklet. If there is a beautiful board in the Prince Kuhio Plaza, she
would stop and read the information. CSW agreed to present this idea to the
committee at the next meeting.
3. Essay Contest
C. Kitaoka reported that CSW needs to determine what CSW can afford and who
will be covered for lunch. After some discussion, it was agreed that lunch will be
provided for the essay winner, parents, “Real Woman,” judges, teachers, CSW
members and staff secretary, ex-officios, and two dignitaries. All other guests
need to pay $29 per person for lunch. Secondly, C. Kitaoka reviewed the
program.
A. Mejia said she was able to obtain a quote of $4 per lei.
2
C. Kitaoka stated that she saw a teacher from Kealakehe Intermediate School
and told her about the essay contest which was already done. In order to spark
interest from the teacher and the school next year, C. Kitaoka offered one winner
from her class a prize. The prize could be a $25 gift card for one student and
also allow the teacher to attend the awards luncheon. The teacher will
acknowledge the student in class, but the winner will not be part of the contest.
After some discussion, C. Kitaoka moved to give a $25 gift card to one student
and that CSW pay for the teacher’s lunch and allow her to attend the luncheon.
A. Mejia seconded the motion. M. Sherman questioned why CSW would not
allow the student to attend as well. C. Kitaoka responded that the student cannot
be acknowledged and the student’s essay will not be included in the booklet
because they missed the deadline. The motion was passed.
K. Peters suggested that CSW distribute the essay contest packet to the
sophomore and junior college counselors for next year. C. Kitaoka added that
she got a fifth grade teacher from Kona as a judge to get her interested and
hopefully get more participation from West Hawaii once she sees the luncheon.
4. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
A. Mejia reported that C. Ka-ipo provided information about having the Women’s
Hall of Fame at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort. C. Ka-ipo had expressed her
desire to hold the event one year in Hilo to see how many people would come
out. If there is not a good turnout, then CSW should continue to hold the event at
the Hilton Waikoloa Village, Water’s Edge Ballroom. Since there were not
enough members present to make a decision, the committee agreed to table this
issue.
5. Equal Pay
K. Peters reported that she will contact E. Cabatu to see whether other
organizations would like to co-sponsor a radio ad on equal pay with CSW.
Suggested groups are AAUW, Soroptimist, Zonta Club, Business Professional
Women, Lions Club, Rotary, and Toastmasters.
B. Health
1. Women’s Health Month
K. Nova reported that she would like to do a workshop/seminar in Kona and
maybe in Waimea on what people can do to manage their stress during these
disastrous times from a psychological perspective. After her presentation, she
would like to have an independent financial planner from the West Coast to
answer concerns such as how to interpret what is really going on when you are
hearing all these things from the media (what to look for and what to not pay
attention to) and how to formulate questions if you are going to talk to your own
financial planner. The financial planner will be on Maui with his family for spring
break and he is willing to come over on March 28, 2009 or April 4, 2009. The
workshop will be held after 1 p.m. at a determined location. She would like CSW
3
to sponsor the ads and refreshments. K. Nova offered to prepare a detailed
budget for the next meeting.
K. Nova moved that CSW sponsor an event around managing stress and our
difficult times along with providing financial information which will be held this
fiscal year. M. Sherman seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
CSW agreed to support the East Hawaii Local Area Consortium Community
Health Fair for Women on May 17, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Keaau
Shipman Park.
C. Liaison
1. HSCSW
No report.
2. Legislative Update
K. Nova read an email that E. Cabatu sent which suggested that CSW designate
three to five bills that they would like to monitor and advocate/oppose. She will
give the committee a voice in the legislative process and she also volunteered for
writing testimony for the committee. On a personal note, E. Cabatu is putting a
lot of her energies to seeing the Civil Union bill pass and she would like to invite
the committee to support this as well.
Tabled.
D. Community Reports
None.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
C. Kitaoka reported that she met with Kathy Jo Kube, Department of Education, and
they are willing to coordinate this event with CSW. The presentations will be held on
either April 27-29, 2009, May 4-6, 2009, or May 11-13, 2009. Dr. Jill Murray has
indicated that she is available during those times and she has suggested that her
travel time begins on a Sunday so she will not charge for her travel time. The
schools that Dr. J. Murray will be attending are Honokaa, Kealakehe, and
Konawaena and she will do a suicide depression at those schools. Other possible
schools are Keaau High School and Kohala High School.
Presentations will be at the following: Konawaena and Kealakehe – one day;
Honokaa and Kohala – one day; and East Hawaii schools – one day. An evening
presentation with the Soroptimist and agencies in West Hawaii. A. Mejia suggested
a presentation at the University of Hawaii which she will inquire about getting a grant
to cover Dr. J. Murray’s expenses.
4
C. Kitaoka said she will ask Sherry Bracken to do the video of Dr. J. Murray.
Dr. J. Murray is more than willing to do a video to show to Kohala High School in the
event the school is not available. S. Bracken has offered to do a radio spot with
Dr. J. Murray to promote the event. She would even do it by phone if Dr. J. Murray
called in the week before.
B. Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia
A. Mejia will contact Detective J. Ancheta to follow up with the presentations.
