CORRESPONDENCE A. Michigan Women’s Commission Newsletter Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer B. Pennsylvania Commission for Women Newsletter REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory K. Nova reported that she will distribute the directory at the workshop in Kona on March 28, 2009. 2. First Female Booklet A. Mejia reported that M. Sherman suggested at the last meeting to have a mobile pictorial display of the women instead of printing the booklet. CSW felt it was a great idea and the committee can take it to their event such as the essay contest, Women’s Hall of Fame, etc. D. Pung offered to obtain research on the display board. C. Kitaoka added that the Data Systems Department can also enlarge items if the committee wanted to blow up the display. N. Kelly moved that CSW do a portable display that can be taken to different events instead of a booklet. D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was passed. 3. Essay Contest C. Kitaoka reported that approximately 90 people have confirmed their attendance for the awards luncheon. Former council member Angel Pilago and council member Emily Naeole provided funding for this event. D. Pung offered to do the congratulatory remarks. Secondly, the event will be livelier with E. Cabatu as the emcee. A. Mejia will pick up 16 leis for the winners, dignitaries, and guests. 4. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame K. Peters asked if CSW ever discussed keeping the event at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, Water’s Edge Ballroom, but having a luncheon instead. It is a much easier commute than the evening, cheaper, and driving will not be an issue. A. Mejia stated that another suggestion was to schedule the event one year in Hilo to see how many people would attend. C. Ka-ipo was able to obtain good rates on the prime rib buffet and rooms at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort. If it doesn’t go well, then the event can revert back to Waikoloa. K. Peters felt that people from West Hawaii would not travel to Hilo or people from East Hawaii would not travel to Kona at night. The turnout at 2 night has not been that good for the past couple years. She felt that having it at Waikoloa is the central point and is a little more fair for people from East and West Hawaii. Elderly people who don’t drive at night are more likely to attend a lunch event. Also, people are unable to stay overnight at a hotel due to the economy. She cannot commit having the event in Hilo unless CSW is going to rotate the location. D. Pung agreed that CSW has not tried a luncheon in Waikoloa. CSW suggested tabling this issue until the next meeting so C. Ka-ipo can be present. In the meantime, C. Kitaoka offered to obtain a lunch menu and cost from the Hilton Waikoloa Village and A. Mejia to obtain the same from the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort. 5. Equal Pay K. Peters reported that she contacted AAUW and the Soroptimist to see if they are interested in co-sponsoring a radio ad on equal pay. The AAUW is taking it to their steering committee at the end of the month and the Soroptimist is taking it to their next meeting for consideration. CSW needs to decide what our proposal is to them. E. Cabatu reported that the ad will cost $1,500 with KWXX/B97/KPUA (210 spots) and $1,800 with KBIG/KAPA/Da Beat. There will be 33 spots for a week which will be the lead up week before the day. After some discussion, K. Peters moved that she will contact AAUW and Soroptimist and inform them that the co-sponsorship for the ad is $250. If they say no, then CSW will spend up to $800 and E. Cabatu will work with the radio stations on that amount and give her discretion to select the day and number of spots. If any sponsorships are received, then it will be reduced from the $800. D. Pung seconded the motion. N. Kelly suggested reducing the number of radio spots to reduce the cost to approximately $1,000. D. Pung suggested cutting down on frequent days. The motion was passed. B. Health 1. Women’s Health Month E. Cabatu reported that she is involved with the East Hawaii Perinatal Consortium. They are having a Health Fair for Women in celebration of Women’s Health Week on Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Keaau Shipman Park. She would like to piggyback on this event instead of having the health fair in August and reinventing the wheel. E. Cabatu asked CSW for funding support. K. Nova suggested that E. Cabatu prepare a budget for approval at next month’s meeting. 3 K. Nova circulated a proposed budget for Learning to Structure Your Own Bailout Workshop scheduled for March 27, 2009 in the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea and for March 28, 2009 in the La Cala Restaurant in Kona. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW E. Cabatu reported that the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) is having a reception celebrating Women’s History Month 2009 on March 24, 2009, at Washington Place. This year a member from the science community will be honored, Ms. Donna Wong, advocate, mentor and champion of environmental, land and water issues in Hawaii. 2. Legislative Update E. Cabatu reported that the 2009 Legislative Bill Tracking document was circulated at the last meeting. D. Community Reports E. Cabatu reported that there will be a March for GRADS this afternoon from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. from the Kamehameha Statue to the Mooheau Bandstand. Due to cutbacks in the Department of Education, the GRADS program is being cut at Waiakea High School, Pahoa High School, and Keaau High School and reduced at Hilo High School. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Secondly, Dr. J. Murray is willing to be videotaped so a DVD can be produced and given to each school with a set of books. C. Kitaoka asked CSW about ordering the Oprah or Dr. Phil show on DVD. CSW approved her request. 4 N. Kelly said that there are leftover key chains, books, and pens. Therefore, CSW’s expenses for Dr. J. Murray are speaker fees, airfare, and hotel. Extra funding maybe used towards radio spots. The Purchasing Agent for the County preferred that Dr. J. Murray bill the committee on one itemized invoice. M. Sherman reported that the editor at Kohala Mountain News would like to interview her about the committee.CSW suggested that she check with J. Mecklenburg for approval. B. Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia A. Mejia reported that the presentation on internet safety will be held in May. One night hotel accommodations need to be provided for the speaker from Oahu if he does the presentation for East and West Hawaii. Detective John Ancheta may provide transportation or the speaker may need a rental car. K. Peters mentioned that David Rodman from Kona has found a product for $60 that parents can use. He is willing to speak about the product and provide suggestions. NEW BUSINESS None. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next Meeting N.
