HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-01-16 Committee on the Status of Women Minutes COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN Friday, January 16, 2009, 10:00 a.m. Department of Parks & Recreation Conference Room PRESENT EXCUSED Katie Nova, Chair Ellen Takazawa, Secretary Carol Kitaoka, Vice-Chair Kathleen Peters Nancy Kelly, Treasurer Mary Sherman Andrea Mejia Julie Mecklenburg, Corporation Dawn Pung Counsel, (ex-officio) Elena Cabatu, HSCSW Commissioner (ex-officio) ABSENT Charmaine Ka-ipo CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 10:20 a.m. ROLL CALL A quorum was present. APPROVAL OF AGENDA N. Kelly moved to approve the agenda as submitted. D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES N. Kelly moved to approve the December 17, 2008 minutes. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURER’S REPORT N. Kelly circulated and reviewed the budget status report (white) from July 1- December 31, 2008 and the projected budget status report (pink). C. Kitaoka reviewed her budget for the essay contest. The winners will receive a $100 savings bond for first place, $75 savings bond for second place, and $50 savings bond for third place. All of the winning teachers will receive a $25 Borders gift card. There will be no medals, invitations, and a photographer this year. Lunch will be included for the winners, “Real Woman,” teachers, principals, one parent, CSW members and ex-officios, staff secretary, Council Chairman, and the Mayor. Cost of the lunch including service charge and tax is $28.51. Leis will be given to the winners and dignitaries. The “Real Women” will receive a gift from Big Island Candies. D. Pung will inquire with Big Island Candies for donations. A. Mejia offered to obtain estimates for the leis at $3-4 per lei. The luncheon awards ceremony has been moved to Sunday, March 1, 2009. K. Nova suggested that CSW purchase one mental health screening kit at the end of this fiscal year. Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer N. Kelly suggested planning a conference with Dr. J. Murray without support from the Department of Education. K. Nova stated that the Soroptimist Club may provide funding support. A. Mejia suggested doing a conference on teens internet protection for parents at the Aupuni Center conference room at no cost to the public and committee. She would also like to have a conference in West Hawaii. She will follow up with the presenters to determine how much time they would need for their presentation and whether refreshments would be included. K.Nova mentioned that it’s hard to find a location for free to congregate people in Kona. E. Cabatu suggested that the radio ad for equal pay should be broadcast for a week on three different stations. She will obtain quotes for the radio ads and what she would want for the Health Fair. CSW agreed that N. Kelly will revise the budget according to the committee’s discussion and she will forward it to J. Viernes to email to CSW members. The treasurer’s report was circulated. D. Pung moved to accept the treasurer’s report. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. CORRESPONDENCE A. Letter from Mayor William Kenoi to Council Chairman J Yoshimoto and Members of the County Council reappointing Dawn Pung and Kathleen Peters to CSW REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory Tabled. 2. First Female Booklet After some discussion, CSW decided the booklet wasn’t ready to go out to bid until CSW members obtain the missing pictures. 3. Essay Contest C. Kitaoka reported that the 11 judges need to be covered for lunch. 4. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame Tabled. 5. Equal Pay No report. 2 B. Health 1. Women’s Health Month E. Cabatu reported that it cost money to reserve the site.D. Pung offered to advance the money in the future. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW E. Cabatu reported that HSCSW commissioners will attend the State of the State address on Monday, January 26, 2009 at the State Capitol. Some students will attend and HSCSW commissioners will mentor them during the state address and lunch. The HSCSW meeting to follow after lunch. K. Nova suggested that CSW have a student from the Big Island attend the state address next time. 2. Legislative Update The Legislative Caucus will hold a press conference on January 29, 2009 to unveil their upcoming bills. D. Community Reports None. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference C. Kitaoka reported that she will work on the conference without the Department of Education. B. Teens Internet Protection – A. Mejia A. Mejia reported that she will provide an update at the next meeting. NEW BUSINESS None. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next Meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, February 20, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. in Waimea. Location to be announced. B. Schedules None.
