COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:10 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
K. Peters moved to approve the agenda as submitted. A. Mejia seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
K. Peters noted that she had suggested a full-page ad for the Hall of Fame and
that it was an example.
K. Peters moved to approve the October 17, 2008 minutes with her correction.
A. Mejia seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The treasurer’s report was circulated.
J. Viernes reported that outstanding expenditures are Jade Moon’s expenses
from the Women’s Hall of Fame.
K. Peters moved to accept the treasurer’s report. A. Mejia seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC
D. Oakley-Melvin reported that she is interested in the committee’s work and she
has much experience in publicity and fundraising.

A. Email from Scarlett O’Hara Bill regarding UN International Elimination of
Violence Against Women Day 2008
B. Letter from Mayor Harry Kim to Council Chairman Pete Hoffmann and
Members of the County Council appointing Mary Sherman to CSW replacing
Janet Coburn
REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
E. Takazawa reported taking packs of the directory to Waimea Hospital,
Hamakua Medical Center, and Lucy Henriques Medical Center. Copies
were available at an East Hawaii Consortium. J. Viernes reported that
people call her for the directory.
2. First Female Booklet
A. Mejia reported that she contacted Hawaii Printing and the printer will
give her a quote after she gets the photos together. E. Takazawa will pick
up Librada Luis’s photo.
3. Essay Contest
Tabled.
4. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
J. Mecklenburg reported that charging $50 for a $38 meal is okay since
the money is used for event expenses.
5. Equal Pay
E. Cabatu reported that the event is in April.Possibilities are 1) the
formation of a book club which raises awareness of pay inequality, using a
book distributed by the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women
(HSCSW), 2) a radio spot for a week, 3) Annelle Amaral can speak in the
High Schools, 4) a person can be interviewed on the radio. K. Nova said
that several women’s groups could be asked to contribute for a program.
B. Health
1. Women’s Health Month
E. Cabatu reported that the event will be held in late August in order to
avoid conflict with the Life Care Center’s wellness event.
A. Mejia got information about road closure and an application for
upcoming events.

C. Liaison
1. HSCSW
E. Cabatu reported that funding for airfare is needed in order to have the
students attend the 2009 International Women’s Leadership Conference in
September, since the registration fee is waived. E. Cabatu stated that she
wishes to take one student from Hawaii Island to the state of the state
address in January.
2. Legislative Update
The Women’s legislative package will be ready in January 2009.
D. Community Reports
None.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
K. Nova spoke to the Soroptomist Club about donating money for hotel,
airfare, and putting on events. The Board will consider the request and get in
touch with K. Nova.
B. Teens Internet Protection - A. Mejia
A. Mejia reported that Community Policing works with the students about the
internet room and internet crime. The Attorney General gives talks for the
adults.
C. 2008 International Women’s Leadership Conference – A. Mejia
A. Mejia stated that the conference was inspiring and amazed with the
women presenters. She has pictures which she will share at the next
meeting. She expressed her thanks for the opportunity. CSW members
commented that a speaker could come to the island during the week that they
are available to speak at the college or high schools. E. Cabatu can
chaperone the girls to the Conference if the committee can raise the airfare.
K. Nova suggested that women business owners be asked for airfare for a
girl.
NEW BUSINESS
None.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at
10:00 a.m. in the Department of Liquor Control conference room located in
Kona.

A. Mejia contacted a grant writer who is willing to write a grant to cover
program expenses – airfare for teens to attend the Governor’s Conference in
September.
B. Schedules
K. Peters and M. Sherman will be unable to attend the December meeting.
