COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
K. Peters moved to approve the agenda as submitted. K. Nova seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
K. Peters moved to approve the February 15, 2008 minutes. A. Mejia seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The treasurer’s report was circulated.N. Kelly reported that CSW spent $7,220.46
since the last meeting ($800 from Travel/Conferences, $400 from Mileage & Auto
Allowance, and the balance from Miscellaneous Contract Services).
K. Peters moved to accept the treasurer’s report. C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The
motion was passed.

CORRESPONDENCE
A. Thank you letter from Kimberly Higashi, Weddings & CS Manager of Mauna Kea
Resort, for selecting their resort as the site for the “Real Women” Essay Contest
Awards Lunch

REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
D. Pung reported that the directory is available on the County of Hawaii’s website
for printing.
E. Takazawa offered to distribute the directory to the hospitals and the University
of Hawaii.
2. First Female Booklet
After some discussion, it was suggested that A. Mejia get three quotes for 100,
300, and 500 copies from the print shop and quotes for different binding. She will
provide a report at the next meeting.
3. Essay Contest
C. Kitaoka reported that Borders gift cards were given to judges who didn’t attend
the awards luncheon. The cost for the event was approximately $6,000. The
lunch cost $32, but CSW charged $25 to participants.
C. Kitaoka said that CSW needs to get the schools from West Hawaii to
participate. She tried taking the essay contest packet directly to the English
teachers and it didn’t help. Holualoa School is the only school from West Hawaii
that participated. C. Kitaoka said that E. Cabatu mentioned to her that she had
ways of getting it out there for next year.K. Peters stated that she could work on
Kohala Elementary School and Kahakai Elementary School to participate.
E. Takazawa said that she will contact E. Cabatu to see if she needs assistance
in getting the essay contest winners on the radio.
C. Kitaoka asked for any volunteers to coordinate the essay contest for next
year. She dislikes doing the program, but she doesn’t mind doing the rest of the
contest. CSW suggested that she assign a member to emcee the program.
K. Peters suggested hiring an emcee or maybe B. Ford or A. Pilago could emcee
the program.

4. Mentoring
D. Pung reported that she did not make contact with Lorraine Godoy, but she will
inform her that CSW has a couple people who are interested in mentoring.
C. Kitaoka reported that M. Masunaga would like to do a mentoring project this
year, but she needs funding from CSW.C. Kitaoka suggested that M. Masunaga
submit a proposal and a budget to the committee.
5. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
N. Kelly reported that the Women’s Hall of Fame has been confirmed for
September 6, 2008 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, Water’s Edge Ballroom.
N. Kelly, K. Nova, and K. Peters will meet after the meeting to review the
selection criteria.
N. Kelly stated that a press release needs to be issued for the upcoming
Women’s Hall of Fame. The photo of last year’s winners with Melveen Leed and
Jade Moon need to be resubmitted to the newspaper since it was never
published.
E. Takazawa suggested that CSW hire Danny Escalona to be the photographer
for the Women’s Hall of Fame.
K. Peters said she would start shopping for the vases. D. Pung offered to obtain
the koa bases again.
6. Equal Pay
No report.
B. Health
1. Women’s Health Month
K. Peters circulated information about the depression screening kit. The full kit
cost $195 which includes materials and screen 50 participants. The older adult
kit cost $95 which includes education and screening materials for 25 older adult
participants.
D. Pung reported that E. Cabatu provided the following report: Women and
Family Wellness Day, September 13 from 10-2, flyer attached. County
Committee will get the pavilion. HMC will provide carts to help participating
groups move their materials and tents.Permit cost $200 has been waived.
$1,000 has been committed by the Commission on the Status of Women. Need
to get confirmation from the Committee about contributing funding for the fair.
Participants already confirmed: Ke Anuenue, HMC Foundation, HMC
Departments, Napua Noe'au. Please help spread the call for participant’s flyer
far and wide. Working on others such as YMCA, YWCA, Turning Point, Bay
Clinic, Planned Parenthood and others.

K. Peters moved that CSW order the kits through National Depression Screening
Day and the amount to be determined. N. Kelly seconded the motion. It was
decided that CSW purchase one full kit at $195 and two older adult kits at $95.
The motion was passed.
C. Liaison

2. Legislative Update
The Hawaii Women’s Coalition Package 2008 and Hawaii Women’s Caucus
2008 was circulated to CSW members.
D. Community Reports
No report.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
C. Kitaoka reported that she is stuck on the contacts with the Department of
Education. The biggest problem now is that they are on spring break. She
suggested bringing Dr. Jill Murray for three days to the Big Island in April. CSW
suggested that presentations will be coordinated at Keaau High School, Kohala
Elementary School, Honokaa High School, Parker School, HPA, and Hilo High
School.
N. Kelly said that she found out that it’s better to do one big session for one grade
level or intermediate schools. K. Nova suggested doing a community presentation
at night. CSW agreed it was well received in Hilo.
K. Peters felt it would be worth spending the money to get a nice videotape available
to people. C. Kitaoka said she could request for a copy of the Kealakehe
presentation by Dr. J. Murray. C. Kitaoka suggested that the committee purchase
the books from Borders instead of ordering it from Dr. J. Murray. N. Kelly said that
all the books were sold in Hilo.
NEW BUSINESS
A. CSW Meeting Date
C. Kitaoka reported that she has court every Friday which conflicts with CSW’s
meeting date. She felt that she should not attend the Hilo meetings at all and move
the Waimea meetings to the third Thursday of each month. E. Takazawa moved to
accept C. Kitaoka’s proposal to move the Waimea meetings to the third Thursday of
each month for the whole year. A. Mejia seconded the motion. The Waimea
meetings for this year are: May 15, 2008, August 14, 2008, and November 20,
2008. The motion was passed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, April 18, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. in the
Department of Liquor Control conference room.
