CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
S. Newland moved to approve the agenda as submitted. C. Ka-ipo seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
N. Kelly moved to approve the November 17, 2006 minutes. S. Newland seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURERS REPORT
The treasurers report was circulated.
Outstanding expenditures are the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education
Conference ($8,000 to $10,000) and the Womens Hall of Fame ($200).
C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the treasurers report. S. Newland seconded themotion.
The motion was passed.

REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
E. Takazawa reported she distributed three directories to Bay Clinic. She
suggested that a packet of the directory be distributed to Kona Hospital which
M. Masunaga offered to take care of. C. Kitaoka would like two packets for her
office in Kona.
2. First Female Booklet
Tabled.
3. Essay Contest
C. Kitaoka reported that the deadline to submit essays is December 15. She has
received commitment from ten judges: East Hawaii judges are Julie Tulang,
Jeanie Whittington, Lisa Faulkner-Inouye, Nikol Calderon, and Dawn Pung.
West Hawaii judges are Barbara Kossow, Kathy Peters, Margaret Masunaga,
Maile David, and Brenda Ford.
During the winter break, three or four girls will do the 300-word count for each
essay.
C.KitaokawillfinalizethemenuwithDarnellCaravalho,Weddings&Special
Events Manager of Mauna Kea Resort. The awards luncheon is scheduled for
Sunday,March4,2007,from10:30a.m.to1:30p.m.attheMaukaSalonatthe
Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
4. Mentoring
M. Masunaga reported that she will do a follow up on the girls mentoring project
in January or February 2007 with the Konawaena High School girls.
5. Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame
C.Ka-iporeportedthatCSWexpendedapproximately$3,130.33fromabudget
of $3,449. K. Peters did a wonderful job on the awards. Detective-Sergeant Ann
MejiaandPuddingLassitercalledherandthankedthecommitteeforthe

wonderful event. In addition, C. Kitaoka said that having Melveen Leed provide
entertainment made the event very special.
D. Pung stated that CSW needs another chairperson to coordinate the Womens
Hall of Fame next year. N. Kelly volunteered to chair the event with assistance
from C. Ka-ipo.
C. Ka-ipo suggested that N. Kelly research the different hotels that is ADA
accessible to host the dinner.
6. Equal Pay
D. Pung reported that she will contact Annelle Amaral to present a mini workshop
in April 2007.
B. Health
1. Womens Health Month
E. Takazawa reported that she received a thank you letter for assisting with the
Ladies Night Out sponsored by the Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi. It will be held next
year in September to coincide with Womens Health Month.
E. Takazawa stated that she would like to have a presentation on Hooponopono.
Perhaps CSW could have a luncheon focusing on Hooponopono, but the
committee has not budgeted for this presentation. However, S. Newland
suggested that CSW speak with new council members Brenda Ford and
Emily Naeole and ask for their assistance with funding. C. Ka-ipo offered to
assist E. Takazawa with this presentation.
E. Takazawa mentioned that she recruited a woman to do the Tellington Touch
onourpets.
C.Liaison
1. HSCSW
M. Masunaga reported there will be a Womens History Month reception to be
held on Thursday, March 22, 2007, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Washington Place
on Oahu. On February 12-13, 2007, there will be a Hiroshima Womens
Educational Center representative who is going to be in Kona. M. Masunaga
said she will try to find out if they wanted to meet with people in the community
specifically relating to the domestic violence clearinghouse hotline. Sachiko
Takato is the person from Hiroshima that will be here. A tentative meeting with
Senator Colleen Hanabusa has been scheduled with S. Takato on
February 16, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. The Pay Equity Task Force meeting will be held
at 10:00 a.m. on February 16 at the Lt. Governors Conference Room. The
HSCSW meeting will also be held on February 16, 2007 at 1 p.m.

M. Masunaga stated that S. Takato invited her to Japan on July 7-8, 2007 to
provide an update on domestic violence in America and the Teen Dating
Violence Prevention Initiative Program.
2. Legislative Update
No report.
D. Marketing
1. Newsletter
Tabled.
E. Community Reports
S. Newland reported that she had five or six events for Domestic Harmony
Awareness Month in November. She distributed 2,700 bumper stickers and 3,500
ribbons in Puna, Hilo, and Kona. She received good press in the newspapers and
she also did a number of radio interviews. She is generating a safe baby resolution
which is being considered by the Womens Coalition for the legislative package.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
C. Kitaoka reported that there were approximately 130 students and a total of 170
people in attendance. The main speaker, Rae Spence, also spoke at Konawaena
High School on November 6. M. Masunaga said that as a result of R. Spence
talking to these kids, there were two follow up inquiries from teens. On November
10, there was an update on teen dating violence prevention on 20/20 and R. Spence
was featured on the program.
C. Kitaoka mentioned that K. Nova recommended Dr. Jill Murray, a speaker on
warning signs. Dr. J. Murray is a well-known speaker who speaks at schools and
conferences. However, CSW was unable to afford her speakers fees and it wasnt
quitetherightconferenceforhertocometoanyway.C.Kitaokasuggestedthat
CSW obtain Dr. J. Murray as the main speaker at a future conference when more
funding is available.
K. Nova said that CSW could schedule Dr. J. Murray to do as many things as we
want her to do. The committee owns her from the time she gets off the plane until
she gets on the plane. C. Kitaoka will contact Dr. J. Murray and work on getting
corporations to subsidize her speakers fees.
N. Kelly suggested that the Violence Against Women Fund might be able to help
with airfare.
C. Kitaoka reported that the purpose of the conference was to create action plans
and take the message back to the schools and the students all created action plans.

B. Math/Science Conference for 7th Grade Girls
M. Masunaga suggested that B. Green contact a council member who is willing to
give her the funding. B. Green needs topresent her proposal to the council member
and then to the full council.
S. Newland moved that B. Green take her proposal to her appropriate council
member and come back to CSW for letters of support. K. Nova seconded the
motion. The motion was passed. D. Pung offered to draft a letter to B. Green on
CSWs recommendation.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Guest Speaker Councilmember Brenda Ford Welcome
K. Nova will invite B. Ford to the March 16, 2007 meeting in Kona since she did not
attend todays meeting.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, January 19, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in the
Department of Liquor Control conference room in Hilo.
B. Schedules
C. Kitaoka will be unable to attend the January meeting.
