APPROVAL OF AGENDA S. Newland moved that the agenda be approved.C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES C. Kitaoka moved to approve the January 20, 2006 minutes. N. Kelly seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURER’S REPORT The treasurer’s report was circulated. S. Newland noted that the $20,000 in the budget is earmarked for the Teen Dating Violence Initiative. S. Newland moved to accept the treasurer’s report. C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. CORRESPONDENCE A. Letter from Barbra Green, American Association of University Women regarding the Annual Math/Science Conference for 7th grade girls in East Hawaii Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer B. Letter from New West Broadcasting Corp. regarding an employment opening for the position of account manager in both Kona and Hilo C. National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW) Networking Newsletter – Winter 2006 REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory E. Takazawa reported that there are a few directory packets left and will take a packet to the Community Policing officer in Hilo. 2. First Female Booklet Tabled. 3. Essay Contest D. Pung reported that the selections have been made, the hotel and banquet room are set, and the invitations have been sent out which stipulate one child and the parents' meal to be paid. The awards luncheon has been scheduled for Sunday, March 5, 2006 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. D. Pung stated that a photographer is still needed. K. Peters volunteered as the photographer since she has had professional photography experience. 4. Mentoring M. Masunaga reported that she will follow up with her contact to solicit artists to speak at school assemblies. 5. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame C. Kaipo’s e-mail was circulated. C. Kaipo has three possibilities, Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on September 30th, and Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel or Hilton Waikoloa Village on October 28th. C. Kitaoka suggested that the Hilton Waikoloa Village be considered. K. Peters moved that the committee vote on the date, September 30th or October 28th.N. Kelly seconded the motion. The motion was passed. The members chose October 28th. S. Newland moved that the award luncheon be held on October 28th at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. K. Peters seconded the motion. The motion was passed. D. Noda will cancel the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel reservations and C. Kitaoka will call the Hilton Waikoloa Village to confirm the reservation. K. Peters will look for an award which can be given each year. PR coordination for ads, press release, and letters to other organizations soliciting nominations is needed. J. Coburn was unanimously selected. Gift solicitation was deferred. B. Health 1. Women’s Health Month Kona: C. Kitaoka reported that Christopher Young will speak on Identity Theft. 2 M. Masunaga stated that she will contact Lillian Koller, State Director DHS, to speak in Kona. S. Newland said that Anne-Marie Lambert can speak on women’s health issues. C. Kitaoka requested that E. Takazawa ask Ms. Lambert to speak at the Kona Hongwanji on women’s issues with the ladies on a Friday. If she agrees, E. Takazawa will e-mail C. Kitaoka and M. Masunaga. Hilo: D. Pung announced that Karen Maedo, Morgan Stanley, will do women’s Financial Health in September. N. Kelly suggested that Ann Zir, UHH Manoa can speak on aging issues, although we would pay for her airfare. N. Kelly will inquire about A. Zir’s availability. S. Newland recommended Jackie Hahn to speak on women’s health issues. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW The next HSCSW meeting is scheduled for February 24, 2006 on Oahu. Governor L. Lingle and Mayor H. Kim issued a Proclamation for Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness. 2. Legislative Update A legislative update will be given to the Commission. D. Marketing 1. Newsletter No report. E. Community Reports None. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Resignations and Appointments None. B. Nominating Committee – Nominations for CSW Secretary S. Newland moved that N. Kelly be nominated for Secretary. C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. C. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative Program C. Kitaoka reported that the training will be on April 7, 2006 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Speakers will be Bruce Wheatley from Idaho, Rae Spence, teen victim from Austin, Texas, and Erin Gaddy from the American Prosecutor’s Research Institute. The grant will pay for the travel and hotel expenses and no speaker’s fee. A local speaker will be Nellie Namuad, a victim. The audience will be attorneys, police, community, health officials, DOE teachers, counselors and students. (Each school with have 3-5 teens). Robert Flores, Administrator, U.S. Dept. of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention may also attend. 3 There will be a $25.00 registration fee to defray the meal charge. 5,000 pamphlets have been printed to pass out at the Conference with posters available for the schools. One in four girls in Hawaii and one in six boys in Hawaii have been sexually assaulted. (Sex Abuse Treatment Center – Honolulu.) D. GEMS Program The GEMS Final Report, Income and Expense Statement, Evaluation, and news article were circulated. E. Bullying – The Next Step Susan Labrenz is the contact person for the coalition on bullying. C. Kitaoka recommended that S. Labrenz meet with the committee at the next Hilo meeting. M. Masunaga will put together an info sheet on the County policy on Anti- Discrimination and Harassment. F. Air Travel from Hilo to Kona and Back – D. Noda D. Noda reported that members wishing to fly to a meeting need pre approval. A member needs to submit a travel request to J. Viernes. The cap would be the normal car expense reimbursement. D. Noda will e-mail this information to C. Kaipo. NEW BUSINESS A. New Committees None. B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships S. Newland withdrew her request for sponsorship of the Vagina Monologues. C. Guest Speakers Kona Meeting - Virginia Isbell (M. Masunaga will invite). Hilo Meeting - Susan Labrenz (E. Takazawa will invite). ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next meeting The next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in Kona. Location to be announced.
