APPROVAL OF AGENDA D. Pung said that she would like CSWs approval to have S. Domingo as a guest speaker on the agenda. S. Newland moved to approve S. Domingo as CSWs guest speaker. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES S. Newland made correction to the minutes on page 4, E. Community Reports, third paragraph: Andy Smith will be reading the Governors proclamation. CSW came out and gave its support. Delete €which shows that. S. Newland moved to approve the December 9, 2005 minutes as corrected. N. Kelly seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURERS REPORT The treasurers report was circulated. S.Newlandmovedtoacceptthetreasurersreport.K.Peterssecondedthemotion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC D.Oharareportedthatshehasawomenstheatregroupandisdevelopingasanctuary for battered women. She expressed support for Domestic Harmony. People are Hawaii County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer uncomfortable with words like battering and violence and its time to start educating people to pragmatic solutions. She was glad that CSW has been supportive. CORRESPONDENCE A. Email from Jamae Kawauchi, Hawaii County Bar Associations 2006 President Elect, to CSW regarding inviting a member of CSW as a guest speaker at one of their meetings from June to November 2006, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. D. Pung volunteered to attend the meeting and she will follow up with J. Kawauchi. B. Letter from Mayor Harry Kim to Council Chairman Stacy Higa and Members of the County Council appointing Cathryn (Katie) Nova to CSW C. Memorandum from Sharon Ferguson-Quick, Executive Director of the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW), to CSW announcing the next HSCSW meeting on January 18, 2006 REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory J. Viernes reported that she has 11 packets left of the directory. 2. First Female Booklet Tabled. 3. Essay Contest S. Newland reported that J. Balberde-Kamalii was still looking for more judges and S. Newland found two more judges. J. Viernes noted that the judging deadline is today. It will be a set back if the judging is not done yet because there are a lot more things that need to be done before the event. The booklet needs to be compiled, savings bonds needs to be ordered, and mailing of the invitations to the winners, teachers, principals, judges,and€RealWoman. J.Balberde-KamaliireportedthattheawardsluncheonisscheduledforSunday, March 5, 2006, at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Themenuhasnotbeensetyet.Theresultsoftheessaycontestshouldbe ready by February 2. Unfortunately, some schools did really good essays, but theyexceededthe300-wordlimit.Themedalshavebeenorderedandgiftcards will be purchased at Office Max for the winning teachers of first place students. Oncethewinnersareselected,thesavingsbondswillbeordered.Solicitation letters for donations will be mailed to Big Island Candies, T&T Electric, and bookstores.TheKiwinsClubatHiloHighSchoolwillbeaskedtomaketheleis for the winners, teachers, judges, principals, etc. The hotel will provide the decorations,centerpieces,PAsystem,andregistrationtable.Thelunchcostfor 2 the winners, principals, teachers, judges, parents, and CSW members are covered by CSW. Family members are charged per head. J. Balberde-Kamalii will inquire for a photographer at Hilo High School or at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. 4. Mentoring C. Kitaoka reported that she is working with tennis pro, Don Guluzzy, on a mentoring program for the 4-H groups to have another tennis session. 5. Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame C. Ka-ipo reported that she contacted the Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, Waikoloa Beach Resort,Mauna Lani Resort, and Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for quotations and availability of dates. Secondly, she found out that the Ironman Triathlon will be held on October 14, 2006. In order to have a bar at any of these hotels, a bar fee of $150 or $75 will be charged with a bartender. If the event does not sell $500 worth of liquor, then the bar fee will be charged. Ka-ipo contact the hotel to see if there are any other dates available. C. Ka-ipo said she would like to have entertainment during dinner. She already recruitedhermusicianhusband,RonKa-ipo,toplaypiano.Inaddition,she would like to invite Melveen Leed to perform if CSW can afford it. M. Leed would dosomethingspecialandsingforeachhonoree.CSWwouldpayforM.Leeds airfare, hotel accommodations, and a stipend of $500. Last years cost for the WomensHallofFamewasapproximatelyunder$3,000.CSWscostwillbe under budget if the event will be held at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. 3 The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is well maintained. K. Peters said it would befair to alternate the location and be flexible with the date. C. Ka-ipo agreed to contact the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and she left a message to inquire whether October 7 or October 14 was available. B. Health 1. Womens Health Month Tabled. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW M. Masunaga reported that the HSCSW had a meeting on Wednesday, January 18, on Oahu. They also met with the legislators since it was also the opening day of the legislature. They had a wonderful speaker, Lillian Koller, Director of the State Department of Human Services, and she had a presentation about different issues affecting women and children. The DHS is working with Goodwill Industries on the UFUE and SEE Program. Hawaii received some federal funding for two programs. M. Masunaga informed Director Koller that people in West Hawaii would be interested in hearing more about this program and the Director said she would be willing to fly over to speak to community groups. DHS is looking at what funds are available at the federal level through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The next HSCSW meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 24, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. on Oahu. 2.LegislativeUpdate M. Masunaga circulated the Hawaii Womens Coalition 2006 Legislative Package Summary. Copies will be provided for CSW members. The full bill is available online. D. Marketing 1. Newsletter Tabled. E. Community Reports S. Newland reported that the domestic harmony awareness poster contest is underway. She is also working on a concert for the first weekend in March because thatiswhenthe€VaginaMonologuesishappening.Theconcertwillbededicated to Sarah Fay. Andy Smith will read the Governors Proclamation. J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that she will be providing two workshops on establishingrelationshipswithadultsatUpwardBound.Theworkshopswillcover the high schools islandwide. She asked if CSW members are interested in being 4 guest speakers at workshops like this to contact her. K. Peters and S. Newland expressed interest in being a guest speaker. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Resignations and Appointments D. Pung reported that N. Kelly and K. Nova are the new appointments to CSW. B. Nominating Committee D. Pung reported that CSW needs two people to serve on the nominating committee with S. Newland to present a slate for secretary. A slate needs to be prepared and emailed to J. Viernes so she can disseminate it to CSW members for the next meeting. C. Ka-ipo and K. Peters volunteered to serve on the nominating committee. C. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative Training Program C. Kitaoka reported that the islandwide training will be held on April 5, 6, or 7 in Waikoloa. The DOE Personnel, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, and students are among the participants to be included in the one-day conference. Each district superintendent will be asked to make sure that at least one school in each district have a school assembly. M. Masunaga reported that she will be going to Washington, D.C. for the launching of the national Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week on February 6, 2006. Governor Linda Lingle will be doing a proclamation declaring the week of February 6 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week for the State. M. Masunaga said she will be drafting a proclamation for the Counties of Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, and the City and County of Honolulu. D.GEMSProgram A final report of the GEMS 2005 submitted by Kiera Horgan, GEMS Chair was distributed to CSW members. E. Bullying ‚ The Next Step S. Domingo said there is a Hawaii Island Anti Bullying Coalition. The coalition meets once a month in Hilo and they discuss issues on bullying. They are focusing a lot on bullying in school and they are trying to address the bullying issue in elementary school. It is a big problem for girls in junior high and high school. However, they have not addressed bullying in the workplace. Through the coalition, they have arranged for guest speakers come to the schools and talk about bullying. The coalition meeting is open to the public and Susan Labrenz is the contact person. The coalition also partners with the public health nurses. S. Domingo suggested that CSW partner with the coalition. N. Kelly reported that the Prosecutors Office is looking at juvenile delinquency prevention.Theywentthroughaprocessofdeterminingpriorityriskfactorsandone 5 of them was early assistance and anti social behavior. Bullying is considered an anti social behavior. They are trying to get statistics from different schools. S. Domingo reported that there was a project done at Keonepoko School where a survey was done with students about bullying. The students will be tracked and tracked again in two or three years. C. Ka-ipo moved that CSW endorse some sort of anti bullying prevention that the committee could support as a group of women. S. Newland seconded the motion. D. Pung suggested that CSW invite S. Labrenz to one of the committees meeting to gather more information. C. Ka-ipo decided to withdraw her motion. N. Kelly moved that CSW invite S. Labrenz to one of our future meetings so she can provide a presentation on bullying. K. Peters seconded the motion. The motion was passed. NEWBUSINESS A. New Committees None. B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships CSW may have a possible collaboration with the Hawaii Island Anti Bullying Coalition. S. Newland reported that she would like to put on the agenda a request for co- sponsorship for the Domestic Harmony Concert. C. Guest Speakers ‚ Stacy Domingo, Firefighter COH, Request for Support for Gender Equality S. Domingo reported that she is a firefighter EMT for the Hawaii County Fire Department. She is currently pregnant so she is on light duty and assigned to the prevention division to work on numerous projects including community service. She would like to decrease the disparity of gender equality for the Fire Department. At this time, there are three women working for the Fire Department (2 women on line, 1recruit).ThewomendonotmakeuponepercentoftheFireDepartment.She would like to investigate those theories and try to encourage more women to investigatenontraditionalroles,encouragewomentobephysicallywelltobeableto do the job of a firefighter, and to educate the community that this is not a firemans jobitisafirefightersjob.ShecirculatedaStatusReportofwomeninfirefighting throughout the nation. S. Domingo stated that part of her plan is to partner with women/female organizationstoaskfortheirsupport.Sincethisisthebeginningstageofthis project, she is not quite sure what kind of support is needed whether it is financial supportormoralsupport.ShefeelsthisisimportantfortheFireDepartment,the community, and for the education of young girls to help develop them into thinking aboutbecomingafirefighterorchoosinganontraditionalrole.Partoftheirplanisto attend a career day event and to send women. They have participated in the GEMS 6 th Conference and they will participate in the Math and Science Day in Hilo for 7 and th 8 graders. They are looking at going into the schools from preschool to high school and developing a presentation just for females in school to give them information about being a firefighter. D. Pung asked S. Domingo what she would like CSW to do. S. Domingo responded that she wants to create awareness of the disparity within the Fire Department and to support their efforts to decrease that disparity. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, February 17, 2006, at 10 a.m. in Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. B. Schedules C. Ka-ipo will be unable to attend the February meeting.
