APPROVAL OF AGENDA D. Pung suggested discussing flying over from Hilo to Kona instead of driving. D. Noda felt it would be helpful to have it on the agenda in the event anybody from the public wanted to make a comment about it. This issue can be added on as New Business today as long as a member make a motion and it is not a reasonably significant of importance that affect a great number of people. C. Ka-ipo moved to add under New Business, E. OtherAir travel from Hilo to Kona and back. P. Newland seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES K. Peters provided a correction to the minutes by e-mail under Unfinished Business, C. GEMS Program as follows: Grade 5 is selected because statistics showadrop in interest and achievement in Math and Science around grade 5. After some discussion, CSW decided to make the following change: K. Peters said that the reason why they select grade 5 statistically is because there is a drop in interest in Math and Science. P. Newland moved to approve the November 18, 2005 minutes as corrected. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURERS REPORT Thetreasurersreportwascirculated. Hawaii County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer J. Viernes reported that the Womens Hall of Fame dinner cost $2,949.27 and CSW collected $1,608 from guests. Approximately $200 was expended for the leis, trophy, engraving, gift bags, etc. P. Newland moved to accept the treasurers report. C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. CORRESPONDENCE A. Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) Meeting Agenda for November 29, 2005 B. Thank you letter from Mariko Hong, Womens Hall of Fame honoree D. Pung read the letter to CSW. REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory C. Ka-ipo reported that they have been successful in placing the directory at the hospital and clinic in Kau. She and E. Takazawa will continue to disseminate the directory. 2. First Female Booklet Tabled. 3. Essay Contest J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that December 1 was the deadline to submit essays. There were 12 schools that responded with a total of 75 essay applications. A majority of the essays were from East Hawaii which included Paradise Home schooling, E. B. DeSilva School, and Kamehameha School as firsttimeentries.TheonlyschoolfromWestHawaiiwasHolualoaSchool.She is still seeking 12 judges for the contest. There are 31 entries for grades 5-6, 2 entriesforgrades7-8,16entriesforgrades9-10,and26entriesforgrades11- 12. 4. Mentoring M. Masunaga reported there was a mentoring program with the 4-H Shining Stars Girls (12 girls) held on November 5, 2005, 7:45 a.m. at Konawaena High Schooltenniscourts.Tennispro,DonGuluzzy,hadasessionwiththe4-Hgirls on improving health and well being. C. Kitaoka reported that she is working with the 4-H Shooting Stars Girls to do thementoringprogramwithD.Guluzzy. 2 5. Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame C. Ka-ipo reported that she volunteered to chair this event next year. She is looking at scheduling the event in September or October. After some discussion, CSW decided that C. Ka-ipo find out when the Ironman Triathlon will be held and the availability of the hotel. Secondly, D. Pung suggested that the event not be held in September because E. Takazawa is busy planning Womens Health Month. M. Masunaga added that CSW is planning to give out notices to Soroptimist, AAUW, and other womens groups to nominate people for the Womens Hall of Fame and they may be involved in their own Womens Health events. D. Noda made a point of clarification based on A. Saint-Gilles input. Was there going to be further discussion or decision on changing the venue or not? C. Ka-ipo said the reason we dont have a venue in Hilo is because there is no venue in Hilo. C. Kitaoka pointed out that the key point is to give people more notice so they can plan the event. C. Ka-ipo stated that she would like more time to plan the presentation, awards, and memento. She would like to have the event held at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel because it is more accessible. She will negotiate with the hotel in getting a bar at the event and reduced hotel accommodations. She will check on the availability of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel during the month of October taking into consideration the date of the Ironman Triathlon and provide a report at the next meeting. D. Pung suggested that C. Ka-ipo also inquire with the Hilton Waikoloa Village food and beverage department since CSW has a good relationship with them. B. Health 1. Womens Health Month No report. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW M. Masunaga reported that the HSCSW had a meeting on November 29, 2005. They were looking at different priorities for women in the State of Hawaii. It will continue to be the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative, economic, self sufficiency, and getting more women to vote next election year. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for January 18, 2006 which is the opening of the Legislature. 2. Legislative Update M.Masunagasaiditstooearlyforanylegislativeupdate. P.Newlandaskedifthereisanytalkaboutdomesticviolenceordomestic harmony. M. Masunaga responded there was a speaker, Kathryn Xian, that 3 came from GirlFest and they do violence awareness month activities every September. They will try to see how that can work with Womens Health Month. C. Kitaoka added that there was a speaker, Christopher Young, he was really good on identity theft. D. Pung wondered if it was possible to have somebody from this island do something like that. M. Masunaga said its a grassroots organization with mainland speakers. D. Noda wondered if there is a possibility to have just a few of their speakers come and do a one day event on the Big Island. D. Marketing 1. Newsletter Tabled. E. Community Reports P. Newland reported that last month she spoke before the Governors Advisory Council for East Hawaii on Domestic Harmony and she also spoke about how pregnant women are the most vulnerable. A benefit fundraiser will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lolas to support safe alternatives requires anothers help (Sarah Foundation). P. Newland said this is a benefit in honor of her friend and Puna resident who was beaten and is brain dead while in her seven-month pregnancy. P. Newland requested for a motion to make something that CSW stands behind which is educating women. P. Newland moved that CSW support the principles of domestic harmony awareness and education. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. C. Ka-ipo questioned the difference between teaching domestic harmony rather than beingagainstdomesticviolence.P.Newlandexplainedthattheprinciplesof domestic harmony awareness is about living aloha, practicing kindness, and generatingmoreharmony.ThemotionwaspassedwithJ.Balberde-Kamalii opposing. J. Balberde-Kamalii said that the PR part focuses on the violence, but she see changes and actions occurring in the type of work that she does. C.Kitaoka questioned how does CSW show support and what is the effect of this issue? P. Newland responded that she will be reading the Mayors proclamation and Andy Smith will be reading the Governors proclamation which shows that CSW came out and gave its support. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Resignations and Appointments J.ViernesreportedthatK.NovawillbeappointedtoCSWnextmonth. B.TeenDatingViolencePreventionInitiativeTrainingProgram C. Kitaoka reported that they met with the Department of Education on November 29 andtheDOEsaidtheywillsupportit.TheydecidedtoconcentrateonHawaii County rather than do it statewide. They will have some peoplefrom Oahu attend 4 the training, but the DOE will determine who they will send. They need to check with the hotels in Waikoloa. A committee is being established with the DOE, Department of Health, Prosecutors Office, Police Department-Community Policing, and other community organizations to get the word out and to get the people to come. She is currently working on the speakers. M. Masunaga reported that the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative is being launched in Washington, D.C. on February 6, 2006. Senator Mike Crapo from Idaho has already introduced a congressional bill before the U.S. Congress and a Congressional Resolution is pending. She suggested that D. Pung consider a picture taking with the Mayor when he presents the proclamation during the week of February 6, 2006. M. Masunaga offered to draft the proclamation. C. GEMS Program D. Pung reported that she informed Barbara Green, East Hawaii AAUW that CSW is unable to fund their request for 7th graders focusing on Math and Science. The committee could help or point them to the right direction. B. Green agreed to submit a request in writing. J. Viernes reportedthatthe GEMS Program has a balance of $3,814 from their budget of $10,000. Leftover monies from the program will be returned to the general fund. D. Bullying € The Next Step Tabled. NEW BUSINESS A. New Committees None. B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships None. C. Guest Speakers P. Newland would like to invite Nathalie Jensen and her mother as potential guest speakers for the January meeting. She will inquire on their availability. D. Other - Air travel from Hilo to Kona and back C. Ka-ipo expressed her preference of flying to Kona and back rather than driving. Mileage cost is 48.5 cents per mile and airfare is approximately $40 roundtrip. However,someoneneedstopickupthemember(s)attheairport,CSWmember(s) rent a car, or catch a taxi. D. Noda replied that she needs to get clarification. If the request was for Kona peopletoflytoHiloandmakecarpoolarrangementsfromHiloairport,itwouldbe 5 okay for next months meeting. But, the logical extreme is if every single person wants to fly and the airfare increases. Who should set the limit? After some discussion, CSW decided to table this issue until D. Noda does further research. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, January 20, 2006 in Hilo. Location to be announced. B. Schedules C. Kitaoka mentioned that the Hawaii State Bar Association meeting may be changed to the third Thursday of each month instead of every third Friday.
