APPROVAL OF AGENDA M. Masunaga moved to approve the agenda as submitted. K. Peters seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES M. Masunaga moved to approve the June 14, 2005 minutes. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURERS REPORT The treasurers report for last fiscal year and the new fiscal year were reviewed. C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the treasurers reports as submitted. M. Masunaga seconded the motion. Newspaper from the National Womens History Project ‚ Celebrating the 85 Anniversary of Woman Suffrage REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory J. Viernes reported that the directory has gone out to bid. The directory should be available by the end of August. J. Balberde-Kamalii said that she received a phone message from E. Takazawa asking how to disburse the directory to school counselors and therapists. She felt it wouldnt be a problem with the dissemination since she did it last year through the Department of Education. Secondly, she suggested cutting back to those sites that have the directory sitting in offices. 2. First Female Booklet Tabled. 3. Essay Contest J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that she is reviewing the time line and dates of the essay contest. The letter to the complex area supervisors will go out next week once verbal approval is received. 4. Equal Pay Day M. Masunaga moved to drop this item from the agenda. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. The motion was passed. 5. Mentoring M. Masunaga reported that she contacted Konawaena High School to see if they are interested in having a girls mentoring project. The vice-principal, Noreen Kunitomo, will make contact if she is interested. KonawaenaHigh School was targeted because there was a teen who committed suicide last month.Thereweresometeenagegirlswhowereeitheremailedorgotavoice mail message on their phone saying €goodbye. There is a national website on mentalhealththattheschoolcouldadopttodointheirschool.Dr.KevinKunz and his wife Kathy Mishina, a mental healthnurse, met with the parents who had knownsomeoftheseteens. 6.HawaiiCountyWomensHallofFame D. Pung reviewed the judges criteria and scoring sheet. M. Masunaga recommendeddeferringittonextmonthsoC.Kitaokacanshareherconcernsat the next meeting. K. Peters moved to defer it to the next meeting. J. Balberde- Kamaliisecondedthemotion.Themotionwaspassed. D.PungdistributedatimelinefortheWomensHallofFameforreview.Emcee Jade Moon has tentatively agreed to attend the event along with her family. The eventmaybeheldduringlunchordinnerpendingconfirmationonJ.Moons availability. M. Masunaga moved that CSW provide ground transportation, 2 airfare, dinner meal, car rental, and parking for J. Moon. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion was passed. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested publishing a news release in mid August instead of September in the Hawaii Tribune Herald and West Hawaii Today. CSW discussed the solicitation of donations since former CSW member Laura Guluzzy received many donations for last years event. Each recipient received a one-night hotel accommodation for two at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, a framed underwater photo, and a $25 gift card for Safeway. The committee decided that each member volunteer to get one donated item for the honorees with flexibility on the value. K. Peters suggested a standard letter of solicitation and send it out to the art galleries on the island. She would be willing to contact businesses in Kona and identify what this project is all about rather than asking friendsforadonation.However,D.Nodaindicatedthatsheneedstoresearch whether CSW can solicit donations.Does the committee want to establish a higherdollar valueif the program continues and there is a full change in membership? What if five yearsdown the road a recipient receives a small plaque and recalls a previous recipient receiving a koa bowl? C. Ka-ipo mentioned about the Office of Aging award that was uniquely designed and given to its recipients. She suggested that the Womens Hall of Fame award be a necklace or something that the recipient could wear that signifies their rank as being in the Hall of Fame. M. Masunaga mentioned about a vase she received with a plaque that was attractive. Aftersome discussion on the type of award to be given to each recipient, CSW decided to table the issue on donations until D. Noda provides clarification at the next meeting. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that D. Pung follow up with J. Moon to determine whether she will be available for lunch or dinner so CSW can make a decision on the time of the event. B. Health 1. Womens Health Month M. Masunaga reported that the HSCSW has no funding this year for Womens Health Month. M. Masunaga suggested that E. Takazawa compile a list of activities for the Big Island so the information can be disseminated. D. Noda asked the status of the HSCSW. M. Masunaga said that a meeting was held with Governor L. Lingle in December and she promised to release the funds. Themoneywasalwaysthere,buttheGovernorhastoreleaseitandittook several months for her to release it. The HSCSW was notified in March or April thatthefundswerereleasedsothecommissionstartedthehiringprocessforthe Executive Director. 3 D. Pung said that she and E. Takazawa are trying to get the same people for this years event. Unfortunately, they are unable to utilize Curves again. Therefore, the Aupuni Center Conference Room has been reserved for two Saturdays. They will be having Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and financial health. C. Ka-ipo offered her facilities at The Arc of Hilo for any events for Womens Health Month. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW M. Masunaga reported that the HSCSW had a meeting on July 15, 2005 and they hired Sharon Ferguson-Quick as the new Executive Director. A formal announcement will be held on August 9, 2005. The 2005 International Womens Leadership Conference will be held on September 14-15, 2005, on Oahu. A request is being made to the Governor that one person from every county committee be allowed to attend and be paid for. 2. Legislative Update None. M. Masunaga reminded CSW members to inform their legislators if there is any issues impacting women. D. Marketing 1. Newsletter Tabled. E. Community Reports th C. Ka-ipo announced that The Arc of Hilo is having their 13 Annual Fashion Show on Sunday, July 24, 2005, at the Nani Mau Gardens. She distributed a brochure on the services provided by The Arc of Hilo. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Resignations and appointments None. B. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative Training Program M. Masunaga reported that she e-mailed Congressman Ed Case asking him if he would help do a joint resolution in Congress declaring February 5-11, 2006 as National Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative and Awareness Week. C.KitaokahasameetingonAugust4,2005onOahuwithagroupthatisdoinga prevention project with the emphasis on homeless teens. C. GEMS Program M.MasunagareportedthatDaleSuezakihasbeentappedtobeaspeakeron financial planning. 4 NEW BUSINESS A. New Committees None. B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships None. C. Guest Speakers C. Ka-ipo reported that she would like to invite her daughter, Adie Figueroa, case manager for The Salvation Army, Family Intervention Services, as a potential guest speaker for the next Hilo meeting to talk about her job and get advice from CSW. M. Masunaga reported that she also invited Mayor Harry Kim as a potential guest speaker for the next Hilo meeting. D. Other M. Masunaga moved that CSW join membership with the NACW for one year. K. Peters seconded the motion. The motion was passed. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, August 26, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. in Waimea. Location to be announced. B. Schedules None. C. Other M. Masunaga reported that there will be a blessing for the Drug Court courtroom in Kealakekua on August 22, 2005, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. In attendance will be Chief Justice Ronald Moon, U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo, and Deputy Managing Director Pete Hendricks. The President of the Hawaii State Bar Association will present a statewideProBonoServiceAwardtoC.Kitaokaattheceremony.Apublicrelations firm on Oahu has been hired to do the media coverage.
