CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:25 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
M. Masunaga moved to approve the agenda as submitted. P. Newland seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
P. Newland moved to approve the May 26, 2005 minutes. M. Masunaga seconded the
motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURERS REPORT
The treasurers report was circulated.
C. Ka-ipo moved to accept the treasurers report. K. Peters seconded the motion. The
motion was passed.

D. A response from Barbara Tavares to Gerald Nakata in the Honolulu Advertiser
regarding why there is not a Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Men
J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that there is a bill on the Governors desk that would
move the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) from the
Office of the Lieutenant Governor to the Department of Human Services.
M. Masunaga indicated that the bill is pending.
REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
K. Peters reported that she completed updating the directory. However,
E. Takazawa did not e-mail her addition. Therefore, her addition needs to be
e-mailed to J. Viernes.
2. First Female Booklet
No report.
3. EssayContest
J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that she will be preparing the initial packets for the
schools and sending a permission letter to the Department of Education at the
end of July. The Charter Schools were well represented last year.
4. Equal Pay Day
No report.
5. Mentoring
No report.
6. Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame
No report.
The Womens Hall of Fame date will not change, but the event may be held
during lunch instead of dinner pending confirmation from J. Moon.
B. Health
1. Womens Health Month
M.MasunagareportedthatDaleSuezakiandKimJacksonwillbedoingan
update on financial health and estate planning with an emphasis on end of life
issuesonSeptember9,2005,at11:30a.m.inKona.Locationtobeannounced.

J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that CSW start sending out letters to the UHH
Womens Center and other programs requesting for their schedule of events so it
can be combine into one bulletin or newsletter for dissemination.
C. Ka-ipo said that she would like to see something done on breast cancer in
collaboration with Kaiser because its becoming an epidemic. She feels women
needs to be educated early.
C. Liaison
1. HSCSW
M. Masunaga reported that they are in the process of meeting with the State of
Hawaii, Department of Human Resources Development office on the procedures
for hiring an Executive Director.
M. Masunaga said that Faye Watanabe Kurren and Maile Meyer are HSCSW
commissioners whose terms are expiring June 30, 2005. She would like CSW to
purchase leis for them. M. Masunaga moved to purchase leis for F. Watanabe
Kurren and M. Meyer and present it to them at the next HSCSW meeting to be
held on June 24, 2005. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion
was passed.
2. Legislative Update
M. Masunaga reported that she does not know whether the Governor will sign
the pending transfer of the HSCSW from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor to
the Departmentof Human Services.
D. Marketing
1. Newsletter
No report.
E. Community Reports
P. Newland reported that the skate park in Pahoa is moving right along. A design
committee meeting was held last week. A filmmaker from Na Leo OHawaii is
working with them to do a public service announcement. P. Newland is helping to
produce the public service announcement.
Planet Puna is happy to announce that they have live streaming video from open
microphone night at Lolas Boutique and Caf°.

B. Nominating Committee

Secretary; E. Takazawa, Treasurer. C. Ka-ipo seconded the motion. The motion
was passed.
C. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative Training Program
M. Masunaga reported that CSW received continued funding from Council
Vice-Chair V. Isbell for the teen dating violence prevention initiative training program
for next fiscal year. She would like to coordinate a February 2006 training date with
the Hawaii Youth Services Network from Oahu. C. Kitaoka is on the planning
committee for the project focusing on homeless and runaway teens.
D. GEMS Program
M. Masunaga reported that the GEMS Program has scheduled their workshop on
Thursday, October 20, 2005, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Outrigger Keauhou
Beach Resort.CSW isinvitedto attend.
M. Masunaga reported that she had a long conversation with Chairperson
Kiera Horgan about the GEMS Program. The district superintendent for the West

Hawaii Complex has been contacted regarding the workshop date. All 5 grade girls
in the West Hawaii Complex are invited to attend. If there is a school that has a
ththth
5/6 grade combination class, then the 6 graders in that class will be invited
based on space availability. Approximately 224 students will be attending the event.
M. Masunaga said that she spoke to K. Horgan about CSWs concerns on selection.
K. Horgan replied that last year they had 175 students and nobody was excluded.

She also invited the home schooled and private schools 5 graders to participate.
Preference is given to the public schools students first and there are more slots this
year than last year.
There will be 15 workshops with 14 students per workshop. The following speakers
have been confirmed: Tracy Brennan, firefighter and paramedic; Beth Jose,
Veterinarian; Valerie Hoke, Katherine Petterson, Occupational Therapist;
Gisela Hetherington, Chemist from NELHA; Melanie Bondera, organic farmer;
LauraDeirenfield,mobilelab;CrystalThomas-Yamasaki,surveyor;TeriLeicher,
scuba diver; Liz Chock and Myrna Tsubota, software engineer at Keck; and
SarahAnderson,alsofromKeck.Pendingspeakersareafinancialspeakerand
other speakers.
M. Masunaga said she also inquired about having the event in East Hawaii.
K.HorgansaidEastHawaiihastheirownprogram,buttheycoordinateitwiththe

Girls Scouts and invite 8
graders. Since the University of Hawaii at Hilo speakers
isused,theirbudgetisnotasmuchbecausetheycanutilizethefacilitiesatthe
university.
M. Masunaga stated that if there is any problems with selection, they will contact
CSW.

C. Guest Speakers
CSWs guest speaker during lunch will be Council Chairman Stacy Higa.
M. Masunaga said she has a few guest speakers in mind and she will try to find one
for the next meeting in Kona.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, July 22, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. in the Kona
Council Office at the Kailua Trade Center.
B. Schedules
P. Newland will be unable to attend the July meeting.
