COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:07 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
P. Newland moved to approve the agenda as submitted. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded
the motion. The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
P. Newland moved to approve the August 13, 2004 minutes. E. Takazawa seconded
the motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURERS REPORT
The treasurers report was circulated.
E. Takazawa reported that funds for Womens Health Month is supported by the Hawaii
State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) trust fund and will not be in
jeopardy as a result of Allicyn Hikida Tasakas resignation.
P. Newland moved to accept the treasurers report. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the
motion. C. Kitaoka inquired about the encumbered amount under the printing account.
J. Viernes said the $1,050 is the cost of the Urgent Services Directory. The bid was
awarded and the funds become encumbered. The motion was passed.

REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
E. Takazawa reported that the directory has gone out to bid and J. Viernes is
now making corrections to the proof. It should be printed by the end of the
month.
J. Balberde-Kamalii asked how CSW will distribute the directories. J. Viernes
responded that CSW members will pick up the directories from her office and the
public will contact her first and then pick it up.
C. Kitaoka stated that she will continue to talk about the directory before different
organizations even though Womens Health Month will be done at the end of
September.
2. Essay Contest
J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that a facility has not been secured for the essay
contest luncheon awards ceremony. The Hapuna Prince Hotel may cut the room
rental from $1,000 to $250. She will work on the essay contest packets next
week to be distributed to the schools. E. Takazawa offered to assist J. Viernes
with collating the packets.
CSW members and M. Masunaga have offered to hand deliver the packets to
various teachers in their district. C. Kitaoka offered to pass out ten packets to
specificteachers.E.Takazawaofferedtohandcarrythepacketsto
Kalanianaole School and Laupahoehoe High and Elementary School.
J. Balberde-Kamalii stated that she is looking for 12 judges (6 from East Hawaii
and6fromWestHawaii).JudgingwilltakeplaceearlyJanuary2005.
P. Newland provided a brief summary of the judging process.
3. Equal Pay Day
P.Newlandreportedthatsheagreedtoworkonthisissue,butitstoopremature
right now.
E. Takazawa reported that she sent the name of the Lieutenant Governor from
theEastCoastwhowasdrawingcrowdsonhertalkforEqualPayDayto

L. Guluzzy. P. Newland suggested forwarding the name to her since she will be
working on Equal Pay Day in April 2005.
4. Mentoring
C. Kitaoka reported that she spoke to M. Masunaga and she hasnt heard back
from Washington Mutual yet.
P. Newland reported that her second annual From Buds to Flowers-Growing
Girls to Ladies program will be held on Wednesday, September 22, at the Pahoa
High and Intermediate School cafeteria. She also invited Governor Linda Lingle
to be a guest speaker and to be a mentor. This program is also part of Womens
Health Month.
E. Takazawa asked whether P. Newland had a budget for this event since she
never seen one. E. Takazawa said she made the budget for the Womens
Health Month grant and estimated P. Newlands cost to be included in this
budget. P. Newland said she was under the impression that E. Takazawa made
the budget and it was already done. She didnt know she had to come up witha
budgetforhereventthisyearandshewasconfusedaboutthis.However,
P. Newland will prepare a budget as soon as possible.
5. Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame Dinner
D. Pung read the email that L. Guluzzy sent to J. Viernes regarding the dinner to
be held on December 11, 2004 honoring six women from our island for their
accomplishments and their status as role models in our communities.
CSW members expressed concerns about the date, cost, time frame, and budget
of the event scheduled for December 11, 2004. Therefore, CSW members
suggested compiling a list of questions for L. Guluzzy to address at the next
meeting.
1. Concerns regarding the dinner cost - can it be negotiated for a more
affordablepricesothatfamiliescanattendtohonortheirnominee?Itis
during the holiday season and money may be tight for them.
2. Committee members were under the impression that the dinner was going to
beheldinJune2005.Howwasthedateselected?Thereisconcernthatthe
holiday season may overshadow the program and the dinner.
3.Is there enough of a time line to get this together? Advertising?
Selectionofjudges?Dispensingofnominationinfo?Selectionofwinners?
4.Whatdoesthebudgetlooklikefortheentireprogram?

B. Health
1. Womens Health Month
E. Takazawa thanked CSW members for distributing the Calendar of Events.
There were a total of 5,000 (2,500 for East Hawaii and 2,500 for West Hawaii)
calendars designated for the Big Island. L. Guluzzy did a phenomenal job of
distributing the calendars in Kona.
E. Takazawa said that she and D. Pung coordinated the Tai Chi class on
September 4 and Qi Gong class on September 11 at Curves in Hilo. Secondly,
CSW and the Hawaii Naniloa Resort spa will be co-sponsoring a fitness fair on
Saturday, September 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Hawaii Naniloa
Resort. Presenter Marcia Timboy, is a certified group exercise instructor and
personal trainer specializing in womens fitness. The event will include free
health assessment screenings (blood pressure and body fat composition
readings, strength and flexibility testing), fitness tips on weight training, yoga and
pilates demos.
E. Takazawa stated that she would like CSW to work with M. Masunaga to
replicate the financial seminar next year in Hilo.
P.Newlandreportedthatapressreleasewillbeissuedtodayonthesecond
annual From Buds to Flowers-Growing Girls to Ladies program to be held on
Wednesday, September 22, at the Pahoa High and Intermediate School
cafeteria.
The meeting was recessed at 11:00 a.m. The meeting was reconvened at
11:03 a.m.
C. Liaison
1. HSCSW
There was no report from the HSCSW.
J. Balberde-Kamalii asked who determines A. Hikida Tasakas replacement. It
was pointed out that the Governor makes the appointment and Jeanne Ohta has
assumed the responsibilities of the HSCSW on a part-time basis. J. Balberde-
Kamalii said that she would like to send something to A. Hikida Tasaka as an
acknowledgment from CSW. E. Takazawa added that she appreciated A. Hikida
Tasakas support with the essay contest and she was very personable.
P. Newland moved to provide a thank you gift up to $50 for A. Hikida Tasaka as
a token of appreciation. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion
was passed.
2. Legislative Update
Noreport.

P. Newland reported that this is the time to let our legislators know ourinterests
for the upcoming legislature. D. Pung suggested that CSW send a letter of
support for the HSCSW to the legislators. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested a
postcard campaign with assistance from different organizations. D. Pung felt it
was a good idea and offered to bring it up at the Zonta Club meeting. C. Kitaoka
recommended contacting the Hawaii Womens Coalition since they were
planning to issue a press release and sign wave on Oahu. D. Pung offered to
draft a form letter to the legislators and email it to CSW members for review. In
the meantime, CSW members should contact their legislators for support.
D. Marketing
1. Newsletter
P. Newland reported that she spoke to M. Lake about the newsletter several
times. M. Lake is aware of the newsletter and shouldbe forthcoming.
E. Community Reports
P. Newland reported that she will be unable to attend the DVIAT meeting this month
and possibly the next few months due to a schedule conflict. Secondly, she
attended a fetal alcohol syndrome training. She also attended a two-day workshop
on homeland security and signed up to be a trainer. Lastly, a new group called We
Stand for the Children has invited people from Oahu to come over and help the
ladies and their families learn more about the legal proceedings and continue to do
information pickets outside the state building.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Resignations and appointments
E. Takazawa reported that she e-mailed Dana Moody from Tutus House to see if
she would like to serve on CSW.
B. Nominating Committee
P. Newland moved to remove this item from the agenda. E. Takazawa seconded
the motion. The motion was passed.
NEW BUSINESS
A. New Committees
P. Newland reported that she would like to discuss domestic harmony as one of
CSWs platform. CSW suggested that she contact L. Guluzzy to put it on the
agenda for the next meeting.
B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships
None.
C.GuestSpeakers
E. Takazawa reported that she would like to request that D. Moody be our guest
speakerduringlunchatthenextmeeting.P.NewlandsuggestedDianaleeasa

guest speaker in December. Dianalee is a comedian and she recently did a
fundraiser at Restaurant Kaikodo.
D. Other
J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that there will be a 2004 International Womens
Leadership Conference to be held on November 17, 18, and 19 at the Hilton
Hawaiian Village on Oahu. P. Newland offered to email information on the
conference to CSW members within the next few days.
E. Takazawa asked if CSW will be sending representatives to the opening of the
legislature. P. Newland explained how important for CSW to attend and lobby our
legislators for issues that the committee would like them to support.
P. Newland mentioned that a Make a Difference Day event will occur on October 16
in Pahoa. Secondly, We Stand for the Children will be having a big event at
Mooheau Bandstand on October 16 in Hilo.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, October 22, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Waimea.
Location to be announced.
