throughout the island. She asked that contact names and phone numbers of the
Hawaiian immersion program be forwarded to her.
J. Balberde-Kamalii said that she will be routing the essay contest packet to the
English department heads instead of the principals this year. A courtesy letter
will be sent to the principals. CSW members and M. Masunaga also offered to
hand deliver the packet to various teachers in their district. The packets will be
mailed out on September 13 and the contest to commence from October 13
through December 17. Judging will take place early January 2005. The essay
contest luncheon has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday, February 27.
A fax was sent to the Hapuna Prince Hotel, Mauna Lani Bay Resort and
Bungalows,MaunaKeaBeachHotel,HiltonWaikoloaVillage,FourSeasons
Resort at Hualalai, and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott requesting accommodations
for the luncheon. Traditionally, the event has been held in East Hawaii.
However, previous discussions suggested that the luncheon be held at a
centralized location to encourage more families from East and West Hawaii to
attend. She asked for possible restaurants in Waikoloa or Waimea in the event
the hotel costs will be expensive. CSW members recommended the Alii Surf
Room at the Royal Kona Resort, Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa, Roys
Waikoloa Bar and Grill, and the Parker Ranch Grill as possible sites.

receiving the proposal next week and decide how much will be funded. It looks
like the insurance and food for 255 girls and 255 employees of Washington
Mutual will be taken care of. The same concept will be used where an adult is
sitting in-between the girls and talk about their career goals, education, and
financial planning.
M. Masunaga said that she spoke to a couple of teachers at Konawaena Middle
School and they are very excited about the mentoring project. In addition, the
President of Washington Mutual has told every participant coming that they need
to sign up for a public service project in West Hawaii. They gave the participants
ten choices and they just sign up for their own choices.

E. Takazawa reviewed the $2,000 grant proposal for Womens Health Month.
The grant proposal will be submitted to the HSCSW for approval.
E. Takazawa moved to accept the $2,000 grant proposal for Womens Health
Month. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. J. Balberde-Kamalii
expressed her support for the omiyage that is included as part of the $2,000
grant proposal. The $250 omiyage will be shared between many volunteers.
However, L. Guluzzy expressed a different view about giving omiyage. When
youre a volunteer, you are doing it because of the goodwill that you have. She
will vote for it because of the culture. On the other hand, she has seen excessive
expenditures of it that she doesnt approve of. She didnt feel it was valid to
spend taxpayers money and she will continue to have that view. She will vote
along with the committee if they feel its important. J. Balberde-Kamalii
suggested that CSW look into identifying marketing items for the committee to
4
give the community. L. Guluzzy suggested deferring this item to the planning
session this afternoon. The motion was passed.
