APPROVAL OF AGENDA D. Pung moved to approve the agenda as submitted. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES P. Newland moved to approve the June 18, 2004 minutes. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURERSREPORT The treasurers report was circulated. P. Newland moved to accept the treasurers report. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. CORRESPONDENCE A. Hawaii Womens Coalition next meeting to be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2004, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the YWCA on Oahu E. Letter from Allicyn Hikida Tasaka, Executive Director of the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW), regarding request for proposal for Womens Health Month 2004 The deadline for the proposal has been extended to Friday, August 20, 2004 for Hawaii County CSW. F. International Personnel Management Association Newsletter - GAO (Government Accountability Office) Examines if Discrimination Exists Against Women in Science Professions G. Memorandum from Corporation Counsel regarding Reminder on Campaign Restrictions for County Officials and Employees H. Letter from New West Broadcasting Corporation regarding an employment opening for the position of sales account executive I. Memorandum from Corporation Counsel to All County Boards and Commissions regarding The Sunshine Law L. Guluzzy recommended that new CSW members attend the next Sunshine Law training. REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory J. Viernes presented the updated directory from former member, S. Nakoa. CSW needs to decide on quantity and color. The revised directory was circulated for review. E. Takazawa reported that she is hoping the directory will be ready for Womens Health Month. CSW members have agreed to talk about the directory before different organizations and then pass it out. She suggested that L. Guluzzy prepare a news release for East and West Hawaii about the €talk story sessions. Joan Kawakone from the Hawaii County Nutrition Program has offered a listing of the various nutrition sites for distribution. After some discussion, P. Newland moved to print 15,000 copies on canary yellow paper. E. Takazawa seconded the motion. The motion was passed. 2. First Female Booklet L.Guluzzysuggestedthatshewouldliketoremovethisitemfromfuture agendas unless someone decides to spearhead this project. 2 P. Newland moved to remove this item from the agenda. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. J. Viernes provided a brief history of the First Female Booklet. D. Davis produced the booklet using a Publisher program on a CD-Rom, but J. Viernes has been unable to make revisions since the program is not available on her computer. E.Takazawa offered to obtain assistance from the Honomu computer resource center. The motion was passed. 3. Essay Contest J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that a letter was sent to the complex area supervisors for the Hawaii School District asking permission to hold the annual €Real Women Creative Writing Competition in the schools. The competition will also be extended to the Charter Schools and the Hawaiian immersion program throughout the island. She asked that contact names and phone numbers of the Hawaiian immersion program be forwarded to her. J. Balberde-Kamalii said that she will be routing the essay contest packet to the English department heads instead of the principals this year. A courtesy letter will be sent to the principals. CSW members and M. Masunaga also offered to hand deliver the packet to various teachers in their district. The packets will be mailed out on September 13 and the contest to commence from October 13 through December 17. Judging will take place early January 2005. The essay contest luncheon has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday, February 27. A fax was sent to the Hapuna Prince Hotel, Mauna Lani Bay Resort and Bungalows,MaunaKeaBeachHotel,HiltonWaikoloaVillage,FourSeasons Resort at Hualalai, and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott requesting accommodations for the luncheon. Traditionally, the event has been held in East Hawaii. However, previous discussions suggested that the luncheon be held at a centralized location to encourage more families from East and West Hawaii to attend. She asked for possible restaurants in Waikoloa or Waimea in the event the hotel costs will be expensive. CSW members recommended the Alii Surf Room at the Royal Kona Resort, Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa, Roys Waikoloa Bar and Grill, and the Parker Ranch Grill as possible sites. 4. Equal Pay Day No report. 5. Mentoring M. Masunaga reported that she got a call from Pyramid Communications, a public relations firm in Seattle, Washington, asking her to submit proposals for WashingtonMutual.WashingtonMutualwillbehavingtheirnationwide convention at The Fairmont Orchid Hotel and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows.TheprincipalatKonawaenaMiddleSchoolhasindicatedthat255 girls will be allowed to participate in the mentoring program on Monday, February28,2005.Theproposalissimilartothementoringprojectheldat Oodles of Noodles on May 2004. The President of Washington Mutual will be 3 receiving the proposal next week and decide how much will be funded. It looks like the insurance and food for 255 girls and 255 employees of Washington Mutual will be taken care of. The same concept will be used where an adult is sitting in-between the girls and talk about their career goals, education, and financial planning. M. Masunaga said that she spoke to a couple of teachers at Konawaena Middle School and they are very excited about the mentoring project. In addition, the President of Washington Mutual has told every participant coming that they need to sign up for a public service project in West Hawaii. They gave the participants ten choices and they just sign up for their own choices. 6. Dress for Success/Fashion Furlough D. Pung moved to remove this item from the agenda. E. Takazawa seconded the motion. D. Pung provided some background history about this program. C. Kitaoka offered to look into having the 4-H group assist with the program. L. Guluzzy said that C. Kitaoka could revisit this issue as a one time only event and bring it before the committee for discussion. The motion was passed. B. Health 1. Womens Health Month E. Takazawa reported that she ordered 2,000 Calendar of Events for distribution on the Big Island. She will provide 50 copies of the calendars to each CSW member for distribution. The distribution sites will be UH-Hilo Womens Center, Volcano Store, Bay Clinic (Keaau, Naalehu, Pahoa, Hilo), Tutus House, Hamakua Health Center, Nutrition Sites (Kohala down to Naalehu), Kau Hospital Rural Health Clinic, and the Senior Activities Center in Hilo. In addition, the statewide pick up locations for the calendars are the Hawaii State Libraries, Longs,Borders,andDepartmentofHealth.Themaindistributionpointwillbeat the County Building on August 30. E. Takazawa reviewed the $2,000 grant proposal for Womens Health Month. The grant proposal will be submitted to the HSCSW for approval. E. Takazawa moved to accept the $2,000 grant proposal for Womens Health Month. J. Balberde-Kamalii seconded the motion. J. Balberde-Kamalii expressed her support for the omiyage that is included as part of the $2,000 grant proposal. The $250 omiyage will be shared between many volunteers. However, L. Guluzzy expressed a different view about giving omiyage. When youre a volunteer, you are doing it because of the goodwill that you have. She will vote for it because of the culture. On the other hand, she has seen excessive expenditures of it that she doesnt approve of. She didnt feel it was valid to spend taxpayers money and she will continue to have that view. She will vote along with the committee if they feel its important. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that CSW look into identifying marketing items for the committee to 4 give the community. L. Guluzzy suggested deferring this item to the planning session this afternoon. The motion was passed. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW M. Masunaga reported that the Governor has cut the HSCSWs budget in half. She thanked CSW for funding a lot of projects. A report from A. Hikida Tasaka, HSCSW, was distributed to CSW members at last months meeting which was cancelled due to lack of quorum. 2. Legislative Update No report. D. Marketing 1. Newsletter P. Newland offered to follow up with M. Lake on the status of the newsletter. She was under the impression that the newsletter was done or being published. E. Community Reports L. Guluzzy reported that there is grant money available from the Hawaii Community Foundation. P. Newland reported that DVIAT is working diligently on the domestic violence awareness month vigil. In addition, she is involved with a new group called We Stand for the Children. She helped coordinate and organize it. This group was founded to look into and to change the situation where children are being wrongfully removed from their homes by the state. Lastly, she is coordinating the domestic harmony awareness campaign poster contest for October and November. Also, a concert will be held in November for domestic harmony awarenessmonth. UNFINISHEDBUSINESS A. Resignations and appointments L. Guluzzy reported that she contacted D. Davis, left a message, and received no response for the first time. Her message said that CSW needs someone who will participate and if D. Davis is unable to attend, then she should consider resigning. L. Guluzzy offered to draft a letter to D. Davis and ask her if she intends to participate or not. B. Nominating Committee L. Guluzzy reported that the vice-chair position needs to be filled due to M. Lakes resignation.D.Punghasexpressedinterestinservingasthevice-chair.CSW unanimously voted for D. Pung. 5 NEW BUSINESS A. New Committees Deferred to planning session. B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships P. Newland reported that she is gathering the people and resources to do the mentor program for the Pahoa area in October. There were no requests from organizations for sponsorships and co-sponsorships. C. Guest Speakers Deferred to planning session. D.Training Meeting Training meeting to be held after lunch. E. Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame ‚ Dinner L. Guluzzy reviewed a proposal for CSW to host a Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame dinner. Possible dates are the first week in October or June 2005. L. Guluzzy moved that CSW host a Hawaii County Womens Hall of Fame dinner with the date pending. P. Newland seconded the motion. The motion was passed. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, September 17, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Hilo. Location to be announced. B. Schedules L. Guluzzy will be unable to attend the September meeting. C. Other J. Viernes announced that the Hamakua Health Center will be having their Ladies Night Out event on Friday, September 3, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. E. Takazawa agreed to attend the event on behalf of CSW.
