COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:12 a.m.
ROLL CALL
A quorum was present.
D. Kalei and B. Lively introduced themselves.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
D. Pung moved to approve the agenda as submitted. L. Guluzzy seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
L. Guluzzy made a correction to the minutes on page 4 as follows: It should read
L. Guluzzy offered the use of tennis rackets through her husband from the USTA.
L. Guluzzy moved to accept the minutes of April 16, 2004 as corrected. D. Pung
seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
TREASURERS REPORT
The treasurers report was circulated.
L. Guluzzy moved to accept the treasurers report. P. Newland seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
STATEMENTSFROMTHEPUBLIC
B. Lively provided a brief history of the Olaa Community Center. The center was
openedeightmonthsagoandisavolunteer/donationdrivenorganization.Thecenter
recently applied for and received a meth initiative grant. They are still seeking more
fundingandcollaboration.
Hawaii County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
D. Kalei reported that the Hawaii Community College has been very supportive with the
Olaa Community Center. The Olaa Community Center is open Monday to Friday,from
1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Their service is to provide service to latch key kids who dont have any
place to go. They also offer space to community organizations such as Parents, Inc.
and Alcoholics Anonymous. Space is also offered free of charge just to bring services
into the area. The center has been staffed purely by volunteers. Plans in the future are
to redevelop the center with approval from the Department of Education. Currently,
they are applying for a $800,000 grant. Furthermore, she started a substance abuse
counseling program in which practicum students will be used.
J. Balberde-Kamalii recommended that D. Kalei contact Kamehameha Schools as a
community partner. She also recommended Jay Kimura from the Prosecutors Office
since they have a Youth Group program.
L.GuluzzysuggestedthatD.KaleipreparepressreleasesabouttheOlaaCommunity
Center. A follow up call should also be pursued.
CSW members suggested that D. Kalei submit an application to serve on the
committee.

REPORTS
A. Education
1. Urgent Services Directory
No report.
P. Newland reported that she attended an Island Solutions workshop in Waikoloa
and she was excited to see a copy of the directory in the handouts.
2. First Female Booklet
On hold.
3. EssayContest
J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that the initial mailing to the schools will begin in
August. Therefore, she will start up in mid June when school is over. She will
make sure that contact with the Charter Schools are made islandwide. Essays
submittedinHawaiianoranotherlanguageneedstobesubmittedinEnglish
also. She will try to get a more diverse group of judges. She will begin research
onhavingtheluncheonawardsceremonyheldinacentralizedlocationsuchas
Waikoloa or Waimea. She asked CSW members to provide any feedback to her.
L.GuluzzysuggestedmoreparticipationfromWestHawaiischoolsandoffered
her assistance. Secondly, she likes the idea of alternating the location of the

awards ceremony in Hilo, Kona, or Waimea. She would like to have the awards
ceremony held in Kona for2006because the new Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort
and Spa, the former Kona Surf, will be open. She offered herassistance in
securing the location in Waikoloa since she knows the marketing director at the
Hilton Waikoloa.
4. Equal Pay Day
D. Pung reported that she was disappointed with the lack of community
involvementbecause CSWbrought in a very worthwhile guest speaker,
Ah Quon McElrath. A. McElrath challenged CSW to see what the committee
was doing to help women out.
M. Lake stated that CSW could discuss this issue further at the training meeting
in July.
5. Mentoring
L. Guluzzy reported that the mentoring project has been scheduled for
May 29, 2004 at 11 a.m. in Oodles of Noodles in Kona. She will be attending the
event representing CSW.
6. Dress for Success/Fashion Furlough
On hold.
B. Health
1. Womens Health Month
L. Guluzzy reported that Dale Suezaki has been able to secure two speakers
from the mainland who are experts in financial issues. A seminar will be
scheduled on September 24, 2004 for womens financial health in South Kona.
Location to be determined at a later date. Another seminar will be scheduled on
September 14, 2004 for womens legal help with speakers M. Masunaga and
Kim Jackson.
E.TakazawareportedthatsheemailedJ.ViernestheminutesfortheWomens
Health Month subcommittee meeting, but it got lost in transit. A hard copy will be
handdeliveredtoJ.ViernesfordistributiontoCSWmembers.Inaddition,she
will meet with J. Viernes to obtain a copy of last years grant proposal since she
willbedraftingthisyearsgrantproposal.
CSWdecidedtomeetasasubcommitteeafterlunchfollowingnextmonths
meeting to discuss Womens Health Month.
L. Guluzzy requested more copies of a health checklist that the Hawaii State
CommissionontheStatusofWomen(HSCSW)distributed.Shewouldliketo
receive them as they come out rather than at the end of the year.

C. Liaison
1. HSCSW
M. Lake reported that she will be attending the next HSCSW meeting scheduled
for June 18, 2004 on Oahu.
A report from A. Hikida Tasaka, HSCSW, was distributed to CSW members.
2. Legislative Update
M. Lake reported that she has been attending the Hawaii Womens Coalition
meetings on Oahu. She has supported what the coalition does. They will be
now focusing on community education. They are also looking into establishing a
website to trackbills.
M. Lake requested that the vice chair attend the next Hawaii Womens Coalition
meeting on June 9, 2004 on Oahu.
E. Takazawa asked if the Hawaii Womens Coalition has agreed to come over
and schedule a meeting on the Big Island. Perhaps a representative from the
coalition could come over and provide a legislative update to CSW. M. Lake said
she brought it to the attention of the Hawaii Womens Coalition, but they did not
bring it up for discussion. The problem may be due to cost, flying, and time. She
will suggest to A. Hikida Tasaka about having a representative attend the training
meetinginJuly.
D.Marketing
1. Newsletter
M. Lake reported that she will have the newsletter completed by the next meeting
for approval. She welcomed CSW members to assist her with the newsletter.
E. Community Reports
L. Guluzzy reviewed her community report which was circulated to CSW
members.
L. Guluzzy reported that her husband participated inaGirl Scout Sports Day held
in conjunction with the National Girls and Women in Sports Day for tennis.
Tennis pro Nancy Wheeler and Mario Celarie, from Mauna Lani Bay Resort,
participated in the event. There were 44 girls, 20 parents/leaders, and 24
volunteers that participated.
L. Guluzzy reported that she attended a Rotary meeting this month. A gentleman
from The Neighborhood Place of Kona presented a nice tri fold brochure which
could be used by someone in the community as a prototype to start up a
business.
P.Newlandreportedthatsheattendedatwo-dayworkshopattheKing
Kamehameha Hotel. The workshop was the Rural Development Council Spring

Consortium. She also attended a transportation meeting in Nanawale with
representatives from the county. Furthermore, she attended the Island Solutions
workshop in Waikoloa on May 1.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Resignations and appointments
M. Lake announced her resignation effective September 2004 due to personal
reasons. She is urging that the Mayor or Wendell Hatada appoint someone from
Kau. An interested member from Kau has already submitted an application.
M. Lake mentioned that Carol Kitaokawill be appointed as the new member
representing Kona next month. There is still one more vacancy to fill from East
Hawaii.
B. Nominating Committee
The ballot from D. Davis has declared L. Guluzzy the vice-chair position. The
following officers are:

Treasurer E. Takazawa
CSW decided to retain the current slate for fiscal year July 2004 to June 2005. CSW
understood that if the chair resigns, then the vice-chair takes over as chair.
Secondly, a new vice-chair needs to be nominated and elected by the committee if a
vacancy occurs for that position.
NEW BUSINESS
A. New Committees
L. Guluzzy moved to table this item until after the training meeting. E. Takazawa
seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships
L. Guluzzy moved to table this item until after the training meeting. E. Takazawa
seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
C. Guest Speakers
M. Lake reminded CSW members to submit names of guest speakers to J. Viernes.
D.TrainingMeeting
CSW members decided to schedule the training meeting for August 7. The time and
placetobedeterminedatthenextmeeting.

E. NACW Convention 2004
P. Newland reported that the convention registration is not yet available on their
website. She was impressed that the NACW website included the HSCSW website
link. She wondered if CSW could become a commission instead of a committee.
L. Guluzzy pointed out that every state has their own structure and it depends on the
way its written in the statutes. CSW could possibly work on revising the statute if
necessary.
P. Newland moved to table this discussion until next month when more information
is available. L. Guluzzy seconded the motion. The motion was passed.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Friday, June 18, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Naalehu.
Location to be announced.
B. Schedules
L. Guluzzy will be unable to attend the June meeting and Womens Health Month
subcommittee meeting since she will be off island from June 10-21, 2004.
Therefore, she recommended that D. Pung attend the Hawaii Womens Coalition
meeting as her replacement on June 9. D. Pung agreed to attend.
C. Other
L. Guluzzy mentioned that West Hawaii Today will employ her as a freelance writer
effective June 1. She will be writing a seniors page. Secondly, she will be the
security systems specialist for Alert Alarm of Hawaii for Kona effective July 1.
