M. Masunaga introduced C. Kitaoka, Deputy Prosecutor in Kona. C. Kitaoka has done a lot of mentoring programs. Her daughter, Kellie Kitaoka, was one of the winners in last yearÓs ÐReal WomenÑ essay contest. Her oldest daughter, Kristin Kitaoka, is the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services representative from Hawaii for the Young WomenÓs Health Summit which was started in 1999. M. Masunaga introduced herself as a representative on the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) and as an ex-officio member of CS P. Newland thanked M. Masunaga for being a part of CSWÓs meeting APPROVAL OF AGENDA L. Guluzzy moved to approve the agenda as submitted. D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES L. Guluzzy moved to approve the March 19, 2004 minutes. D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURERÓS REPORT The treasurerÓs report was circulated. M. Lake questioned the shortage in the mileage and auto allowance account. J. Viernes said that any shortages in a particular account will be deducted from the total account balance, therefore transfer of funds is not required. L. Guluzzy suggested revamping the budget the following fiscal year for mileage and a HawaiÒi County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer D. Pung moved to accept the treasurerÓs report. P. Newland seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. CORRESPONDENCE A. Pennsylvania Commission for Women Newsletter REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory M. Lake reported that former member S. Nakoa will be updating the directory. P. Newland asked where she could get additional copies of the directory since Officer Andrea Mejia was asking for them. J. Viernes replied that she just made 1,000 copies of the directory for distribution. 2. First Female Booklet M. Lake reported that it doesnÓt seem like CSW will be able to print the booklet by the end of the fiscal year. Therefore, the booklet will be published next fiscal year. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested that M. Lake contact D. Davis to determine if there is any barrier obstacles that she is experiencing in completing this project. M. Lake offered to send D. Davis a letter. 3. Essay Contest L. Guluzzy suggested sending a press release of the essay contes West Hawaii Today. She offered to draft the press release. She felt that all press releases should be routed to J. Viernes to print on CSWÓs J. Balberde-Kamalii reported that the essay contest was cool, awesome, terrific, and a wonderful experience. The judges and the students said they enjoyed the event. She need to make it clear when sending out the packet to the schools that an English version needs to be provided when a language other than English is submitted. She suggested having a montage as a backdrop at the awards luncheon next year. J. Balberde-Kamalii expressed her appreciation to S. Tanaka and J. Viernes for their assistance with the essay contest. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested looking for a comfortable location with more space and a less smoky atmosphere. L. Guluzzy recommended the K and E. Takazawa suggested the venue could be at Waikoloa. J. Balberde- Kamalii said she will start researching a location in Hilo, Kona 2 L. Guluzzy offered to assist in recruiting the Kona schools to participate next year. J. Balberde-Kamalii said that better communication needs the Charter Schools. E. Takazawa recommended D. Escalona as the photographer for next year again. 4. Equal Pay Day M. Lake reported that CSW will be sponsoring an Equal Pay Day brown bag lunch seminar on Tuesday, April 20, 2004, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MayorÓs Lanai. Guest speaker will be Ah Quon McElrath. M. Lake offered to do the publicity/press release for the Equal Pay Day seminar. E. Takazawa mentioned that the refreshments will include water with lemon slices, juice, and cookies. J. Viernes agreed to pick up the refreshments, cups, napkins, and a lei. L. Guluzzy agreed to prepare a flower arrangement for the refreshment table. 5. Mentoring M. Masunaga reported that the lunch/dinner has been targeted for May 8. She may purchase the books at Borders instead of Costco. She will hand deliver the invitations to the students. She informed the SCBM at Konawaena Middle School that the speaker included in the budget may not be funded. Therefore, her proposal request has been revised to $1,356. Approval has b the school administration to proceed with the proposal. L. Guluzzy moved to accept the proposal and the expenditure of $1,356 from miscellaneous contract services for the mentoring program. D. Pung seconded the motion. D. Pung suggested sharing this project with East Hawaii. M. Masunaga responded that it would be easy to duplicate the program if there was a target group. The motion was passed. P. Newland reviewed her proposal for Pahoa High and Intermediate students. The event date has been targeted for mid May. J. Viernes raised a concern about providing honorariums to various people involved with the project. L. Guluzzy requested clarification on having belly dancers performed. Secondly, she did not understand how manners and etiquette correlate with dance. She has questions about spendin on belly dancers and there would be other questions from the public also. P. Newland said that the honorariums were a thank you gift for coming to the event. Secondly, Middle Eastern dance is an activity that keeps 3 graceful and in touch with their bodies. Belly dancing is also popular and successful and it will be entertainment in the afternoon for the girls. E. Takazawa pointed out that mentors traditionally has done their services for free. She did not feel that CSW need to pay these mentors. A lei and lunch is sufficient for their services. J. Balberde-Kamalii added that CSW could also provide a Certificate of Appreciation for their involvement or small omiyage. D. Pung said it will be more to the mentorÓs advantage if their name and photo is publicized in the newspaper. M. Lake suggested that P. Newland seek a grant for future programs. J. Balberde-Kamalii recommended that it be the responsibility of the participant if any monies are being expended. J. Balberde-Kamalii asked whether or not CSW should purchase some of the make up that will be used. Perhaps MacyÓs could donate the supp makeover. M. Masunaga mentioned that there are representatives from Mary Kay or Avon who would be willing to do this for free and provide free samples. L. Guluzzy said that the different designers (Covergirl, Estee L budgets for free samples if contacted. E. Takazawa moved to amend the proposal to remove the honorariums and fund the balance of the proposal for $487. M. Lake seconded the moti J. The W.A.V.E.S. Project is to reach girls that arenÓt already in sports or havenÓt had that much exposure in sports. The plan is to present it to 4H groups and to the girls at the Kona Hongwanji Dharma School. L. Guluzzy moved to accept the proposal as presented. E. Takaza the motion. D. Pung questioned if there is another target group besides the 4H groups. C. Kitaoka replied that she recommended the 4H groups because they are more the craft and cooking people. M. Masunaga indicated that the 4H groups are not athletic so they would be the target group. L. Guluzzy said that she likes the education of sunscreen because there is medical difficulty in getting skin doctors on this island. E. Takazawa stated that she would like the 4H groups to do a presentation within their classroom about this project. L. Guluzzy offered tennis rackets through her husband from the USTA. J. Balberde-Kamalii suggested a sports shop to donate the visors and a print shop to print the logo on the visor. CSW raised concerns about the transportation costs. L. Guluzzy amended the motion to accept the proposal less the tr coaches for a total of $1,135. E. Takazawa seconded the motion. was passed. 4 6. Dress for Success/Fashion Furlough D. Pung reported that she spoke to B. Iramina and she is not quite ready for this program. The Zonta Club is working with B. Iramina on a reading program. B. Health 1. WomenÓs Health Month The subcommittee meeting will be held after lunch. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW M. Lake reported that there was no commission meeting this month. The next meeting will be held on June 18. A report from A. Hikida Tasaka, HSCSW, was distributed to CSW members. 2. Legislative Update M. Lake reviewed the Hawaii WomenÓs Coalition Bills that are still alive. D. Marketing 1. Newsletter M. Lake reported that the deadline to submit articles is May 1. E. Community Reports E. Takazawa reported that some women have gotten together from the rural south Hilo area and they had a community meeting to discuss development that is coming up. P. Newland reported that she submitted a report for the last DVIAT meeting held in Kau. M. Masunaga reported that there will be a public forum called Meet Your Judges on Tuesday, May 4 from 4-5 p.m. at Judge IbarraÓs courtroom in Keal Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court, Ronald Moon, and Judge Ronald Ibarra, Judge Joseph P. Florendo, Jr. and Aley K. Auna, Jr. will be there to provide a short presentation and to answer any questions the public may have. T be a public forum on Tuesday, May 4 from 4-5 p.m. at Judge Nakam in Hilo. Associate Justice Steven H. Levinson of the Hawaii Supreme Court, Judge Greg Nakamura, Judge Ben Gaddis, Judge Terence Yoshioka, and Jud Barbara Takase and Glenn Hara will also be there. The per diem judges have been invited to attend and participate. Refreshments will be served. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Resignations and appointments M. Lake reported that CSW has two vacancies to fill from Hilo and Kona. P. Newland submitted an applicant from DVIAT as a potential candidate. 5 B. Nominating Committee After voting by secret ballot, the results are as follows: Vice-Chair Î L. Guluzzy and Paradise Newland (tie) Secretary Î J. Balberde-Kamalii and Dawn Pung (tie) Treasurer Î E. Takazawa J. Balberde-Kamalii agreed to be the secretary. After some discussion, P. Newland moved to table the vice-chair position to next month. D. Pung seconded the motion. A ballot will be sent to D. Davis which will determine the results. The motion was passed. NEW BUSINESS A. New Committees Tabled. B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships P. Newland reported that she would be willing to remove the belly dancing from her proposal in order to secure another vote. She would like to reopen her proposal for consideration. E. Takazawa moved to accept the proposal and delete all the honorariums and the belly dancers from the program. The proposal cost will be $487. D. Pung seconded the motion. The motion was passed. C. Guest Speakers 1. Ah Quon McElrath M. Lake reported that she has arranged for A. McElrath to be the guest speaker at the Equal Pay Day brown bag lunch seminar on April 20, 2004. CSW needs to approve her airfare and lunch. D. Pung moved to approve A. McElrathÓs airfare and lunch. E. Ta seconded the motion. The motion was passed. D. Training Meeting Tabled. E. NACW Convention 2004 M. Lake reported that she was unable to obtain information about Convention on July 14-18, 2004 in Pasadena, California. P. Newland volunteered to get more information. Tabled. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next Meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, May 21, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Hilo. Location to be announced. 6 B. Schedules None. C. Other P. Newland circulated a letter of support to accept domestic harmony as one of CSWÓs platform. Tabled.
