APPROVAL OF AGENDA S. Shirachi Gonsalves moved to approve the agenda as submitted. P. Newland seconded the motion. The motion was passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES D. Davis moved to approve the March 20, 2003 minutes. M. Andrews seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURER'S REPORT The treasurer's report was circulated. C. Hara reported that the only anticipated expense not included in the treasurer's report is the First Female Booklet. She suggested planning a retreat once the final vacancy is filled. S. Shirachi Gonsalves expressed interest in attending at least one Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) meeting on Oahu. P. Newland moved to accept the treasurer's report. M. Andrews seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC M. Lake reported that the UHH Women's Center submitted a grant for the coordinator response team to be formed at the university. The project is called H.E.A.R.T. (higher education aÒole response team). The $400,000 grant was from the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice. The grant will be for UHH and the Hawaii Community College (HCC) Eas Hawaii campuses. A counselor advocate will be set up at HCC and coordinator at the UHH Women's Center will coordinate a crisis response team between the university campus, police, YWCA-SAVE, and Alternatives to Violence. One of the prime objectives of the grant is to change attitudes in the community teaching people to say "no" to violence that is inflicted upon them. CORRESPONDENCE Circulated. REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory M. Andrews reported that she continues to distribute the directory. Approximately 27 packs of the directory are left. C. Hara stated that the Kona Mayor's Office has a stock of the directories available for distribution. She did a presentation to the Zonta Club and gave them two packs of the directories. The head librarian for the Big Island is a member of the Zonta Club and she offered to distribute them to every library on the island. 2. First Female Booklet D. Davis reported that there is no Page Maker document on any diskettes she received. There are several word documents in text format o word document is not the same as the mock up booklet. She sugge recreating the booklet either in Page Maker which she has no experience using or Publisher which she has experience in using. Once the document is completed in Publisher, the booklet should be print ready and could be e-mailed to the printer. However, she is unable to sca photographs because her scanner does not have good capability for scanning. Her goal is to try and get the booklet completed by t this fiscal year. The specifications should be turned in to J. end of May since the deadline to submit requisitions is June 2. S. Nakoa was able to obtain a quote from a printer in Kona to ge of the cost. The quote for 1,000 booklets was $3,523. C. Hara suggested that CSW consider getting bids for both 1,000 and 2,000 booklets the difference in cost will not be that much. C. Hara reminded D. Davis about ADA requirements when determining the print size and font. Secondly, she suggested adding a notation on the back of the booklet with the copyright date, year published, and quantity printed. S. Shirachi Gonsalves offered to provide ADA information on font size and language to include in the booklet. 2 J. Viernes will scan the photographs and e-mail them to D. Davis when done. 3. Essay Contest C. Hara reported that she handed over the reigns to S. Tanaka. She will be meeting with S. Tanaka to review the informational packet to out in August. 4. Equal Pay Day M. Andrews reported that the Equal Pay Day press conference held on April 15, on Oahu was well-attended. There was a line up of gue speakers. She circulated a packet of information from the conference. M. Andrews also attended the HSCSW meeting which was held at 1:00 p.m. The topic of discussion was the demise of the HSCSW. She and P. Newland were the only guests in attendance. In addition, HSCSW has just created a Self-Sufficiency Standard Report for the State of Hawaii. There is also a Self-Sufficiency Standard training kit. 5. Mentoring C. Hara reported that she spoke to M. Masunaga about CSW's concerns regarding the issue of ethics. CSW should not select who participates in the project. If M. Masunaga's daughter participates in the project, then M. Masunaga has to pay for all costs involved. Furthermore, her daughter's teacher was uncomfortable with having to make the selection of which ten girls would participate in the project because she wanted to offer it to all the girls. Therefore, M. Masunaga decided to do the project through her daughter's Girl Scout troop. The troop leader will contact with the parents and M. Masunaga will provide the waiver forms to the participants and explain the project to them. Contact has already been made with Macy's. D. Davis added that M. Masunaga is trying to "formal" lunch donated or a reduced price. 6. Dress for Success/Fashion Furlough C. Hara read a report from B. Iramina about the Fashion Furlough program. Copy of the report is attached. B. HEALTH 1. Women's Health Month C. Hara reported that it looks like the topic for this year's Women's Health Month will center on the Self-Sufficiency Standard. C. Hara stated that M. Masunaga has already secured guest speake the month of September in Kona. Dale Suezaki from Morgan Stanley will be providing an update on financial planning and Kim Jackson wil talking about estate planning. M. Masunaga has offered the spea 3 do presentations in Hilo. Perhaps Tutu's House could also utilize the guest speakers for Waimea. During Women's Health Month, Tutu's House has planned an event twice a week for the entire month of September. The Bay Clinic has agreed to plan an event in every geographical area. CSW has offered to help the Bay Clinic promote their events. C. LIAISON 1. HSCSW P. Newland reported that she attended a meeting on Bridge to Hope, H.B. 129 prior to the HSCSW meeting. Teresa Bill coordinated the event which was about helping women on welfare and First-to-Work people apply education as part of the work requirements to enable them to become self sufficient. One speaker who is a single mother provided a heart and moving story on how she got her life back together. Another from California provided a story about what it is like for a woman going through life without Bridge to Hope or getting a job without higher education so they are still bound to the low poverty lifestyle. The Bridge to Hope Program is seen as an important tool to enable women to get proper education. She circulated a flyer and brochures on the Bridge t Program. P. Newland stated that she also brought back a handout on the Hawaii State Legislature Women's Political Caucus 2003 Legislative Agenda which was dedicated to the memory of Congresswoman Patsy Mink. addition, she made a special connection with Senator J. Kalani E He supports women and children's issues. She shared copies of h newsletter. P. Newland provided a copy of the book called "Dressed to Kill" She stated that she gave a copy of the book to Governor Lingle and suggested that we look at a breast health awareness campaign. S personally donated a book and made the presentation to Governor Lingle on her own without CSW's knowledge or consent. D. MARKETING 1. Newsletter S. Shirachi Gonsalves reported that she found a male student (Nic Los Banos) who will be taking on the newsletter. The deadline to su articles and bio of new members are April 30. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Resignations and appointments C. Hara reported that CSW has been given back the opportunity to voice our recommendations on who the committee would like to serve on CSW. Wendell Hatada, Executive Assistant, provided a list of potential candidates 4 willing to serve on CSW. She reviewed the following four applications: Laura Guluzzy, Kona; Paulette Ke, Volcano; Kristine Kubat, Pahoa Kathryn Swain, Pahoa. C. Hara asked M. Lake when her application was submitted because it wasn't here. She said she hadn't submitted it yet. Being that M. Lake resides in Ka'u and has attend many of our meetings in Hilo and in Waimea, the committee agreed that she would be an ideal candidate. After some discussion, the four applicants were ranked accordingly: 1. Laura Guluzzy 2. Paulette Ke 3. Kristine Kubat 4. Kathryn Swain C. Hara mentioned that there are two potential candidates from Kona, but their applications have not been received yet. CSW will continu applications. NEW BUSINESS A. New Committees None. B. Sponsorships and Co-Sponsorships None. C. Guest Speakers S. Shirachi Gonsalves reported that Dr. Alton Okinaka will be a luncheon guest speaker on Friday, May 16, at 11:30 a.m. in the Nihon Restaurant following the CSW meeting. D. Nominating Committee C. Hara reported that CSW needs to elect a nominating committee for the upcoming election in June. M. Andrews made a motion to elect B. Iramina, S. Nakoa, and S. Tanaka to serve on the committee. P. Newland seconded the motion. The motion was passed with S. Shirachi Gonsalves abstaining. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, May 16, at 10:00 a.m. in Hilo. Location to be announced. B. Schedules The CSW Retreat has been scheduled for June 13, from 12:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Kona or relocated to Waimea if S. Nakoa and M. Masunaga are unab attend. The regular CSW meeting will be scheduled from 10:00 to 5 11:00 a.m., lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and CSW Retreat to commence at 12 p.m. C. Other S. Shirachi Gonsalves reported that a non-traditional male student will be assisting her with the Oxfam campaign. The student is of African American ancestry, from a military, and he is supportive of women's issues. She will convince him to take on a pay equity project next year. Secondl write a grant that will work on self empowerment for people with disabilities to support M. Lake's grant. The grant is due February 2004.
