TOUR DEPARTURE:
1.The group met at the Honolulu Airport at 8 a.m. and began the tour.
Steve Kelsey, Recycling Specialist with the City and County of Honolulu hosted the tour.
GENERAL EDUCATION REGARDING THE ONGOING METHODS OF SOLID

WASTE AND WASTEWATER DISPOSAL AT THE TIMES AND SITES LISTED
BELOW:
Hilton Hawaiian Village: 9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. (Hotel recycling program)
Ann Keolanui, Assistant Executive Steward, led the group on a tour of the recycling “flow
of operations” areas, including the Tapa Loading Dock, General Store Room, and Main
Kitchen. The hotel has a 75% recycling rate. Their recycling information for 2006 was
distributed (attached to the original minutes).
HPOWER: 11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. (Waste processing facility)
The group viewed a video of the facility operations before taking a walking tour of the site.
(Covanta Energy Solid Waste Annual summary for FY 2006-2007 was available and is
attached to original minutes.)
Schnitzer Steel12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. (Scrap metal facility)

Jim Banigan, General Manager, and Rene Mansho, Community Relations Director,
accompanied the group on a bus tour of the facility and distributed information packets
(attached to original minutes).
Kapolei Shopping Center:
Due to being behind schedule, the group did not break for lunch.
Hawaiian Earth Products: 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. (Composting facility)
The group also did a riding tour of this facility, viewing the different stages of mulch and
compost processing.
Honouliuli WWTP/Reclamation: 2:00 p.m. – 3:20 p.m. (Wastewater treatment
and reclamation facility)
The group viewed a video of the operations of this compound before taking a tour of the
treatment plant and water recycling facility. Information guides and documents were
distributed (attached to the original minutes).
ADJOURNMENT

The group returned to the airport at 4:00 p.m. and the tour adjourned.
