Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira stated that as a result of a citation issued by HIOSH in the
amount of$58,000 for failing to provide adequate air support and respiratory protection
during fire suppression operations in West Hawaii, the Department entered into a
contractual agreement to purchase a compressor/air refill unit for West Hawaii and the
fine was then reduced to $10,000 with the stipulation that the fine would be returned to
the County for the sole purpose of subsidizing the equipment purchase and training of
personnel. The equipment needed to be purchased by December 31, 2002.
Lincoln Ashida moved and Ronald Ueoka seconded that Fire Department's request to
standardize the purchase of Mako compressor/air refill unit.
At this point in time,Fire Chief asked if it was possible to go with another product or
does the Department have to purchase only the Mako brand. The Fire Department just
received another$200,000 grant for another unit, which would be placed in South
Kohala.
RECESS: 2:10 p.m. to allow Fire Chief to get the brand name of another
manufacturer who made a presentation recently.
RECONVENED: 2:15 p.m.
After some discussion, Patricia Engelhard moved and Lincoln seconded to amend the
motion to include purchase of either the Mako or American Bristol brand. Motion
carried.
