If the registration is expired, an application for registration must be filed and taxes
due paid for the one year period beginning with the first day of the month the application is first filed. To obtain this permit
or registration and plates, the following must be presented to the Department of Finance, Treasury Division at 101 Pauahi
Street, Suite #5, Hilo, HI 96720-4224 or at its Kailua Kona office at 75-5706 Kuakini Highway (Hanama Place):
4. Title (if no lien holder) and current registration.
5. Bill of Lading
6. Hawaii safety inspection certificate (Hawaii Motor Vehicle Insurance Identification card required when
motor vehicle is safety inspected.)
If there are any questions, please call Treasury Division's Hilo office at 961-8351 or the Kona office at 327-3543.
NOTE: STATE LAW REQUIRES PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATE OF OWNERSHIP PRIOR TO SHIPPING VEHICLES.
EXEMPTION ON STORED VEHICLE: A owner must surrender his current license plates and emblem according to
Hawaii law to be eligible for tax exemption on a stored vehicle. If this is not done, when registering the vehicle, an owner
will be charged for all back taxes on the out of state vehicle from the registration expiration date or 12 months from arrival
date of vehicle in Hawaii, whichever occurred first.
Hawaii County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer.
