HomeMy WebLinkAboutNotice to Motor Vehicle Owners NOTICE TO MOTOR VEHICLE OWNERS NO MOTOR VEHICLE MAY BE OPERATED UPON ANY PUBLIC STREET, ROAD OR HIGHWAY OF THIS STATE AT ANY TIME UNLESS IT IS INSURED UNDER A HAWAII MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE POLICY (294.8, HRS) AND SAFETYINSPECTED. All owners of motor vehicles that bear out-of-state license plates are required to register their motor vehicle with Department of Finance, County of Hawaii, within thirty (30) days of arrival. A motor vehicle permit ($5.00) or Hawaii license plates ($5.50) will be issued up to the expiration month of the out of state license but not to exceed 12 months. If the registration is expired, an application for registration must be filed and taxes due paid for the one year period beginning with the first day of the month the application is first filed. To obtain this permit or registration and plates, the following must be presented to the Department of Finance, Treasury Division at 101 Pauahi Street, Suite #5, Hilo, HI 96720-4224 or at its Kailua Kona office at 75-5706 Kuakini Highway (Hanama Place): 4. Title (if no lien holder) and current registration. 5. Bill of Lading 6. Hawaii safety inspection certificate (Hawaii Motor Vehicle Insurance Identification card required when motor vehicle is safety inspected.) NOTE: STATE LAW REQUIRES PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATE OF OWNERSHIP PRIOR TO SHIPPING VEHICLES. EXEMPTION ON STORED VEHICLE: A owner must surrender his current license plates and emblem according to Hawaii law to be eligible for tax exemption on a stored vehicle. If this is not done, when registering the vehicle, an owner will be charged for all back taxes on the out of state vehicle from the registration expiration date or 12 months from arrival date of vehicle in Hawaii, whichever occurred first.
