Peters seconded the motion. The motion was passed. TREASURER’S REPORT The treasurer’s reports were circulated. N. Kelly reviewed last fiscal year and this year’s treasurer’s reports. Last fiscal year’s report reflected a balance of $142.65. The current fiscal year shows a budget of $10,360 with an expenditure of $150 for the rental fee for the Ladies Night Out event at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in September. D. Pung moved to accept the treasurer’s report. C. Kitaoka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. CORRESPONDENCE A. Email from Diane Ley, State Executive Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, regarding Hispanic and Women Farmers and Ranchers Claims Process Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer REPORTS A. Education 1. Urgent Services Directory N. Kelly reported that R. Aburamen, who administers the domestic violence strategic plan grant, has budgeted approximately $1,500 for next year’s directory. 2. Equal Pay No report. B. Health 1. Women’s Health Month No report. C. Liaison 1. HSCSW K. Nova read E. Cabatu’s report. E. Cabatu met all of the new commissioners at the last July 15 meeting on Oahu. She is happy to report that the following funding requests that were submitted have been granted in full by the commission: Women’s Health Month – Ladies Night Out, main organizer Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi (Hawaiian Health System), partners: Queens Liliuokalani Children’s Center, Hawaii County Committee on the Status of Women, Hilo Medical Center, Perinatal Consortium and others. Last year the commission covered shirts and paper goods at about $2,000. This year the organizers are looking for help in tables and chairs rental at $620 and mahalo ad in the Hawaii Tribune Herald at $525. Also this year, the event has grown to include 500 of East Hawaii’s neediest women. In years past, the count was 300-350. Can the commission cover the $1,145 in total for the tables and chairs rental and mahalo ad? Women’s Health Month – Teen Pregnancy and Prevention PSA that ran May 10- 14. The East Hawaii Perinatal Consortium would like to run it in September when school starts up again. Can the commission go in halfs with the consortium at $600? Domestic Violence Prevention Month October – Instead of doing the mall ads, would you consider running the county committee on the status of women Teen Dating Violence PSA again? The committee lost a significant amount of funding for the next fiscal year, but loves the PSA. It paid $3,000 in the spring to run the ad across the entire island and on every station. However, if the commission is interested in funding this, the spots can be run on the two most popular stations for about $1,500. This ad would also coincide with the YWCA’s local version of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, in addition, to the county’s Family Violence Interagency Committee needing help getting the radio as on prevention out to the community. 2 Also, the committee was very happy to hear that the commissioners wanted to have the teen dating violence ad shared with the other committees and UH Radio. The YWCA’s local version of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is also looking for some funding, but I think we can fold promotion of their event with the Teen Dating Violence ad. 2. Legislative Update No report. D. Community Reports None. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Essay Contest – C. Kitaoka C. Kitaoka will update the packet and the initial packet to the schools will be mailed out the first week in September. B. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame – Committee No report. C. Teen Dating Violence Prevention (DVD) – N. Kelly/C. Kitaoka C. Kitaoka said she has the DVD somewhere in her office. N. Kelly reported that the books were distributed to the schools and various agencies. She wondered if the DVDs should be given to those schools that received the books. N. Kelly mentioned that the Prosecutor’s Office will be bringing in two presenters from Oahu on August 4, 2011 for a presentation on Teen Dating Violence Prevention in Hilo. She signed up to see the presentation. If the presentation is good, N. Kelly said she would like to bring this presentation to West Hawaii in the near future in collaboration with our community partners. The target group is out of school youth which is goodwill. There will be a presentation for teens in the morning and a presentation for adults who work with teens in the afternoon. She will email J. Viernes about the status of the presentation and she can forward the information to CSW members. K. Peters suggested that the DVDs be given to the LifePlan group who will be doing the mentoring project at Kealakehe High School. C. Kitaoka recommended that CSW wait to see how the Teen Dating Violence Prevention presentation goes before distributing the DVDs. D. Mentoring – K. Peters K. Schneider explained that the Lifeplan Institute Hawaii Island is hooked under The Hualalai Ohana Foundation which was started by the homeowners at Hualalai and it 3 is intended to further education for the families and children of the workers at Hualalai. It is also intended to help with any medical expenses if the need arises and at the end of all of this came in mentoring. K. Schneider reported that there were approximately less than 40 kids who attended nd the Lifeplan Institute Hawaii Island 2 Annual Youth Summit held on Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Four Seasons Hualalai at Hualalai Resort. It was a gender mixture, but more girls than boys with a range of ages. She felt that it was beautifully done as far as location and the presentation. Some of the challenges that she noticed were some organizational issues such as engaging the children. They had outdoor activities such as rock climbing and canoe paddling. In the afternoon, they had 15 minutes breakout sessions in a career which was not well done. She felt that the presenters should have been told that you need to have something more interactive when you’re presenting because these kids are clueless to everything it’s going to take to be in the profession that you’re in. K. Schneider felt that Lifeplan has a good model that they want to implement and it’s still being developed. K. Peters said that she didn’t think CSW have to do mentoring because it’s being implemented by Lifeplan and the committee wouldn’t come close to their humongous project that they are doing. She stated that CSW should put their efforts elsewhere because it’s already being conducted. N. Kelly suggested that CSW help find mentors. N. Kelly mentioned that she heard about the Youth Challenge Program that is looking for mentors which is located at the former Kulani Correctional Facility. Primarily 60 to 70 percent of the kids are from the island and the rest of the slots are filled from the neighbor islands. They are looking for people to be mentors for these kids after they leave the program because the problem for these kids is transitioning back into society. D. Pung pointed out that the Lifeplan model is wonderful, but it is too sophisticated for our kids. The Youth Challenge Program or the Senior Project is more feasible for the committee to do. K. Peters added that she does not know what CSW’s role would be in Lifeplan. K. Peters said that she was talking about mentoring young women when she signed up for mentoring. Her vision is scaled down to something that CSW could do. She does not want to get involve in this grand project because the committee’s resources are very limited. She is willing to do something that is very specific, focused, time limited, and effort limited. She does not want to be involved in a project that has no direction with no results. She suggested sending a letter to every high school asking if they have a girl interested in a particular career, then the committee is offering a career day luncheon. It will be up to the girls in the schools who are interested, but may not have a mentor to ask questions. N. Kelly mentioned the career opportunities fair in Hilo and they bus kids in. They are looking for people to coordinate a fair in West Hawaii. 4 K. Schneider said she would like to follow up with K. Cert of Lifeplan to see if they will be having anything small and specific. After some discussion, K. Peters and K. Nova agreed to come up with a few proposals for a career day luncheon and provide it for discussion at the next meeting. NEW BUSINESS A. Request for funding for the Filipino Domestic Violence Conference – 10/28/11 The HSCSW has agreed to fully fund the $2,000 expense for keynote speaker Leni Marin. th B. 8 Annual International Women’s Leadership Conference – 9/20/11 K. Schneider said she will be attending the conference. K. Nova will ask D. Downs if she will be attending. After some discussion, D. Pung moved that CSW will pay for registration fees, airfare, taxi, and airport parking for two people. K. Peters seconded the motion. The motion was passed. ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Next Meeting The next meeting will be held on Friday, September 9, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the Prosecutor’s Office conference room in Hilo. B. Schedules K. Nova and C. Kitaoka will not be attending the September meeting. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 11:22 a.m. RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, _______________________________ JEAN VIERNES, STAFF SECRETARY 5
