CSE VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION LUNCHEON
In appreciation for our volunteers many hours of dedication and service to our Kupunas, CSE is
holding our annual volunteer recognition luncheons. West Hawai‘i will hold its luncheon on
October 27, 2011 at Yano Hall. The theme for this year’s luncheon is “CSE Volunteers are Heaven
Sent”. East Hawai‘i’s luncheon will be held in Hilo on November 18th with the theme of “Volunteers
are Priceless”.

TAX TIME ALREADY?!
Once again CSE and AARP will be teaming up to offer tax preparation
services to low income seniors who need help filing their 2011 tax returns.
Seniors living in East Hawai‘i can begin calling CSE at 961-8777 to schedule an
appointment after January 3, 2012. In West Hawai‘i please call the AARP Tax
Assistance program at 334-1212.
AARP Tax Aides volunteer their times to offer this important service. Donations are
happily accepted and are used to provide food and beverages to the
volunteers each day. AARP continues to look for Tax Aide volunteers who can
assist seniors with their simple tax returns. All necessary training will be provided for free.

Mr. Ikeda has been a STEP enrollee stationed at the CSE Hilo office since July 2009. He has
been a tremendous help in assisting with the transportation services, standing by and helping
seniors in and out of our CSE vehicles. Always full of energy and good cheer, the place just isn’t
gonna be the same without you Mr. Ikeda. CSE wishes you all the best in your future endeavors.
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Since the hurricane season is upon us, here are a few tips from a Civil Defense preparedness booklet:
A Disaster Supply Kit should include:
7 day supply of water (1 gallon per person, per day)
Non-perishable food
One change of clothing & shoes
Prescription & non-prescription medications
One blanket or sleeping bag per person
First Aid Kit
Battery powered National Weather Radio/portable radio
Emergency tools
Flashlight & batteries
Set of car keys & credit card or cash
Special items for elderly, disabled or infants
A Shelter Kit should include:
First Aid Kit
Medication & Prescriptions
If needed, baby food & diapers
Books, music player w/ headset
Toiletries
Battery powered radio & cell phone
Identification
Copies of important papers (such as insurance policies)

SENIORS STILL RIDE FREE ON THE HELE-ON BUS
The Hawai‘i County Mass Transit Agency provides public transportation around the
island on the Hele-On bus. Recently a $1.00 fare was set for all island-wide scheduled
routes. However, if you are a senior with proper ID you can still ride the bus for FREE!
CSE issues the Hawai‘i County Senior ID Card for island residents who are 60 years or
older. Just stop by any of our offices and let us issue you a new picture senior ID card.
You can also check out the senior ID schedule shown to the right for times and locations
near you or just call our hotline for more information and assistance at 961-8777.
In addition, the Mass Transit Agency also offers a Shared Ride Taxi program which provides
door to door transportation for as little as $2.00 within the urbanized area of Hilo and Kona.

SUMMER FUN!
New horizons appear as we enter summer and a new fiscal year. Congratulations to Roann Okamura as
she is assigned to fill the EAD Director position as well as taking care of Kamana Senior Center.
Elderly Recreation Services and Special Programs are combining staff and duties, but will still bring the
events and activities you so enjoy. Just take a look at the sports events, class and club activities that took
place during the past few months. More to come with the 29th Annual Kupuna Hula, Ground Golf in Kona
and Nā‘ālehu, West Hawai‘i Prime Time Wellness Fair and a Hawaiian-style Christmas event.

forty mass dances for our trip to Maui’s 2nd Line Dance Roundup.

Class & Senior Club Happenings...
A two-day workshop was held at the Kea‘au Learning Center where 28 students were taught
pelt-feather leis from instructor Doreen Henderson. Students Denise Keli‘i Aunty Doreen
and BJ Pang Ching are wearing hats adorned with their pelt-feather lei.
RYTHYM & LIFE
Our Rhythm & Life exercise program has grown with 2 more certified instructors, Ginger Ikeda
and Laverne Daimaru, as they performed exercises before President Toyoda, Matsumoto
and Saito Sensei of Japan.

First time visit for some of the Mt. View seniors as they ventured to the City of Refuge, enjoyed a great
meal at the famous Manago Hotel and wandered the grounds of Amy Greenwell’s Ethnobotanical Gardens.
Great hula entertainment was shared by the Honaunau Senior Club during the Lei Day Program at the West
Hawai‘i Civic Center.
What better way to cool off, exercise and loose weight than by taking Carol Elliot’s Deep Water Aerobic
class held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Kona Community Pool.
After visiting the West Hawai‘i Civic Center, the Kona Regional Senior club driven by CSE driver
Terrance Terada had a picnic lunch under bright sunny skies at the Old Kona Airport.

Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball League
2011 Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball and State Senior Softball Tournaments
The 37th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball Tournament was held on July 13 & 14, 2011 at Walter
Victor Stadium in Hilo. Twenty-one of the league’s twenty-three teams participated in the two-day,
four division tournament. An opening ceremony attended by Mayor Billy Kenoi, P&R Director
Robert Fitzgerald, and other dignitaries and sponsors started the tournament at 8:00 a.m. on
Wednesday, July 13, 2011. Both days were filled with many exciting games in all the divisions.
On the final day, in the Division I championship game the Honomū Rockets defeated Kohala, 12-6.
The following are the final results for the 37th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball Tournament:

The 36th Annual Hawai‘i State Senior Softball Tournament was held August 2-4, 2011 and hosted by the
County of Hawai‘i, Department of Parks and Recreation, Elderly Activities Division and the Hawai‘i Kupuna
Softball League at the Old Airport Complex in Kailua-Kona.Twenty-one of the Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball
League’s teams participated in this years’ three-day, six division, fifty-two team tournament. It was the
largest state senior softball tournament to date, and it attracted more than 900 players, supporters, and
fans to our island.
On the final day of the tournament Kupuna Pride, Punatics, and Pu‘uwai Opio swept the F Division.
Kona Gold took 3rd place in the A Division. The Onomea Rangers defeated the Onipa‘a Iron Birds, 13-12,
for 3rd place in the B Division. The Waimea Paniolo defeated the Golden Eagles of O‘ahu, 12-5 for
3rd place in the D Division and Ku‘ikahi came in 2nd place in the E Division.

We’d like to congratulate Hawai`i Kupuna Softball League Coach Oligario “Gallo” Fernandez who
was elected into the Prince Kuhio sports Hall of Fame on August 21st. Inductees to the hall of
fame are nominated by the public based on their accomplishments. A committee then chooses
that years’ inductees based on their impact on the community.
Gallo has been inducted this year based on his athleticism in basket ball, baseball and his work as
a coach. Gallo has been the coach for the Kohala kupuna softball team.

The Kailua Nutrition Site said “Aloha” to CSW Christy Kitaoka in July. Under the leadership of
President Marilyn Debus, the seniors planned a SECRET party with surprise guests, a delicious
lunch from Pine Tree Café, a decorated cake, and even an original song, by CSW Helen Lindsey.

The STEP partnered with the Hawai‘i Community College with coordinator Tiana Koga and
instructor Christopher Jacobson to produce a first time Ground Maintenance and Safety course.
It was a hands on and academic training in grounds maintenance, soil structure, planting and
tool use. Classes were held at the UH Hilo College of Agriculture Farm and on the UH campus.
