HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOMM. 48.3 from Robert re Ka'uOctober 25, 2011
To Mr Dru Kanuha who after a poor turn -out at his meeting in Na'alehu, concluded that not
many people have an opinion about redistricting. Once again, an erroneous conclusion based on
lack of cultural knowledge of local situations.
All of my friends here in Ka'u are appalled at the idea of dividing Ka'u, which has been ONE
District historically for hundreds of years. We are proud of Ka'u. Many of us avoid public
meetings for many reasons. One, they often get rowdy and impolite. Two, many of our
"community leaders" are exactly the people that should not be leading. Was this put to a vote? Is
this a democracy? Was there at least a poll or a survey in the paper?
To divide Ka'u down the middle is basically a castration that puts Pahala in Puna's outfield, and
puts Na'alehu and Ocean View in Kailua Kona's outfield. Unacceptable. Mr Kanuha, may I
suggest that you make some phone calls. Do some door to door interviews. Take the temperature
of the people on the issue of cutting Ka'u in two!
Aloha from Robert in Wai' ohinu.
DO NOT DIVIDE KAU
The proposed splitting of Ka'u would form one district from Punalu'u and Pahala to
deep into Puna. And in another district, Discovery Harbour, Kalae and Na'alehu citizens
would vote with people of Kona as far north as Lako Street and Kahalu'u Beach. The
division would chop through our most hallowed lands above Punalu'u. This symbolic
act cannot come to be.
DON'T LET THEM CUT KA'U IN TWO.
NO SPLIT KAU
1. We live in a centralist system. Honolulu is the center.
2. No one in Hawaii has local level (city) government except perhaps in Honolulu.
3. This fact adds importance to our county and state legislature representation.
4. We live on the island most distant from the capital.
S. We live on the back side of the back island.
COMM. 48.3
6. We travel further to go shopping than any one else living in the state.
7. Our children travel further to school than any other children in the state.
8. We have a higher percentage of people living without running water than any where
else in the nation.
9. The proposed realignment puts Pahala in the outfield of Kea'au and Na'alehu in the
outfield of South Kona. DIVIDE &CONQUER.
10. If we also consider the other proposals already on Ka'u's plate, we begin to see the
shape of Ka'u's future is at stake here.
11. The proposed division of Kau at Punalu'u strikes at our heart. This is overt
gerrymandering that would likely be overturned in the courts.
ONE KAU!
