Aloha Hawaii County Redistricting Commission,
I would like to mahalo you for considering my opinion as a concerned and involved community member of the
Hamakua District 1.
We are long- time,(35 year) residents of the Hamakua and a 28 year awapuhi Farmers in the Pa'auilo area. We
wish to impress upon you our strong beliefs that the District of the Hamakua cannot be effectively represented
by a Hilo perspective, nor a Waimea to Kawaihae, Puako dry perspective. Our issues are vastly different. We
enjoy the representation now of a full interest in out issues of an agricultural history and current issues of
agriculture and rural lifestyles.
In this time in our lives it is more important than ever to support and maintain these important food growing
lands of the Hamakua and not to lump them in with communities with a more development minded priority and
population. We need to protect these lands from development and keep this rural district alive to, literally, keep
our island nation alive, as well. In this day in time we may be called upon, as in the past war times, to support
our islands with the foods we grow here. We may not be able to bring in, nor want to bring in, foods from far
away lands. The prohibitive fuel costs and unhealthful products result in our estrangement from our beautiful
`aina and our meaningful lives.
Please consider our needs and our requests. We do not support Plan A nor any plan breaking- up our District
of the Hamakua.
Mahalo for your attention, Aloha,
Sandra McDonald
